    Since the dawn of organic electronics in the 1970’s, academic and industrial research efforts have led to dramatic improvements of the solubility, stability, and electronic properties of organic semiconductors (OSCs).[1, 2] The common benchmark to characterize the electrical performances of OSCs is their charge carrier mobility ÎŒ (cm2 V–1 s–1), defined as the drift velocity of the charge carrier (cm s–1) per unit of applied electric field (V cm–1). Reaching high mobilities in OSCs is highly desirable as it allows faster operation of transistors and energy savings by reduced calculation times.[2, 3] However, OSCs performances (conventional values usually range from 1 to 10 cm2 V–1 s–1, with highest values obtained with single-crystal devices mostly exempt of structural defects) are still not comparable to that of state-of-the-art inorganic semiconductors (e.g. metal oxides with ” = 20-50 cm2 V–1 s–1 and polycrystalline silicon with ” > 100 cm2 V–1 s–1) thereby hampering important potential technological applications such as flexible organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays and wearable electronics.[3, 4

    Enhancing Perceived Safety in Human–Robot Collaborative Construction Using Immersive Virtual Environments

    Advances in robotics now permit humans to work collaboratively with robots. However, humans often feel unsafe working alongside robots. Our knowledge of how to help humans overcome this issue is limited by two challenges. One, it is difficult, expensive and time-consuming to prototype robots and set up various work situations needed to conduct studies in this area. Two, we lack strong theoretical models to predict and explain perceived safety and its influence on human–robot work collaboration (HRWC). To address these issues, we introduce the Robot Acceptance Safety Model (RASM) and employ immersive virtual environments (IVEs) to examine perceived safety of working on tasks alongside a robot. Results from a between-subjects experiment done in an IVE show that separation of work areas between robots and humans increases perceived safety by promoting team identification and trust in the robot.     Telomerecat: A ploidy-agnostic method for estimating telomere length from whole genome sequencing data.

    Telomere length is a risk factor in disease and the dynamics of telomere length are crucial to our understanding of cell replication and vitality. The proliferation of whole genome sequencing represents an unprecedented opportunity to glean new insights into telomere biology on a previously unimaginable scale. To this end, a number of approaches for estimating telomere length from whole-genome sequencing data have been proposed. Here we present Telomerecat, a novel approach to the estimation of telomere length. Previous methods have been dependent on the number of telomeres present in a cell being known, which may be problematic when analysing aneuploid cancer data and non-human samples. Telomerecat is designed to be agnostic to the number of telomeres present, making it suited for the purpose of estimating telomere length in cancer studies. Telomerecat also accounts for interstitial telomeric reads and presents a novel approach to dealing with sequencing errors. We show that Telomerecat performs well at telomere length estimation when compared to leading experimental and computational methods. Furthermore, we show that it detects expected patterns in longitudinal data, repeated measurements, and cross-species comparisons. We also apply the method to a cancer cell data, uncovering an interesting relationship with the underlying telomerase genotype

    The James Webb Space Telescope Mission

    Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least 4m4m. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the 6.5m6.5m James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible.     Category spanning, evaluation, and performance: revised theory and test on the corporate law market

    Studies suggest that category-spanning organizations receive lower evaluation and perform worse than organizations focused on a single category. We propose that (1) these effects are contingent on clients' theory of value and that as clients expect more sophisticated services, they tend to value category spanners more positively and (2) the evaluation of producers mediates the relationship between category spanning and performance. We test our hypotheses using original data on corporate legal services in three markets (London, New York City, and Paris) over the decade 2000-2010. We find that (1) category spanners receive a better evaluation, and more so when their categorical combination is more inclusive and (2) evaluation mediates significantly the relationship between category spanning and performance. This study enriches our understanding of how audiences apprehend a whole market category system and why organizations span categories.The HEC Foundation and the Society & Organizations Research Center provided financial support for this research
