Automatic Detection of Circular Objects by Ellipse Growing

    Get PDF
We present a new method for automatically detecting circular objects in images: we detect an osculating circle to an elliptic arc using a Hough transform, iteratively deforming it into an ellipse, removing outlier pixels, and searching for a separate edge. The voting space is restricted to one and two dimensions for efficiency, and special weighting schemes are introduced to enhance the accuracy. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method using real images. Finally, we apply our method to the calibration of a turntable for 3-D object shape reconstruction

Evaluation and Selection of Models for Motion Segmentation

We present a theoretically optimal linear algorithm for 3-D reconstruction from point correspondences over two views. We also present a similarly constructed optimal linear algorithm for 3-D reconstruction from optical flow. We then compare the performance of the two algorithms by simulation and real-image experiments using the same data. This is the first impartial comparison ever done in the sense that the two algorithms are both optimal, extracting the information contained in the data to a maximum possible degree. We observe that the finite motion solution is always superior to the optical flow solution and conclude that the finite motion algorithm should be used for 3-D reconstruction

Bilinearization of Discrete Soliton Equations and Singularity Confinement

Bilinear forms for some nonlinear partial difference equations(discrete soliton equations) are derived based on the results of singularity confinement. Using the bilinear forms, the N-soliton and algebraic solutions of the discrete potential mKdV equation are constructed.Comment: 14 pages, LaTe

The nodular umbilical metastasis of the visceral carcinoma has been termed the “SisterMary Joseph’s nodule” (SMJN), and is one of signs of a terminal condition. There are variousroutes of metastasis according to anatomical and embryological specificity. We reporttwo cases of metastatic adenocarcinoma of the umbilicus, and also reviewed the 108 cases ofSNJN that have been reported in Japan. The patients were 49 year-old man and 84 year-old woman who were referred to ourhospital with umbilical nodules. Examination by computed tomographies, a biopsy and anextirpation of umbilical nodules showed that the primary malignancies were the pancreascancer and the gallbladder cancer.Of 110 SMJN cases in Japan, thirty-one were men and seventy-six were women, and theprimary focus was found in the stomach (45/103 : 39%), ovarium (18/103 : 13%), pancreas (14/103 : 15%) or colon (11/103 : 12%). In fifty-two cases (52/94 : 55%), initial presentation of theinternal organ carcinoma was an umbilical nodule. It is generally reported that the prognosis of the patient with SMJN is extremely poor, but a few cases get the long survival after extirpation of SMJN. In order to decide propertreatment and prognosis, it is necessary us to further examine the primary malignancy andthe route of metastasis for the SMJN patient

Mesenteric malignant lymphoma is comparative rare and has a poor prognosis in anadvanced case. Here, we report a patient with intestinal obstruction due to mesenteric malignantlymphoma treated successfully by gastrointestinal bypass operation, chemo-and radiotherapy.A 67-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of abdominal pain andnausea. An abdominal CT scan revealed a huge tumorous lesion with a soft tissue density, which involved descending colon. Since the symptoms was persisted after conservativetreatment, gastrointestinal bypass procedures were surgically formed. During the laparotomy,an open incisional biopsy was performed. Histological examination showed non-Hodgkinlymphoma with diffuse, large-sized and B-cell type. This case was classified into high-risk groupacccording to International Prognostic Index (IPI). After the operation, 5 courses of combinedchemotherapy (THP-COP) and 30 Gy radiation were performed. These multidisciplinarytreatment is considered to be very effective. Since then complete response and goodpatient’s QOL has been attained for these 3.5 years

CP, Charge Fractionalizations and Low Energy Effective Actions in the SU(2) Seiberg-Witten Theories with Quarks

Several dynamical aspects of the SU(2) Seiberg-Witten models with N_f quark hypermultiplets are explored. We first clarify the meaning of the number of the singularities of the space of vacua. CP invariance of the theories are then studied and periodicities of theories in \theta with and without bare quark masses are obtained ((4-N_f)\pi and \pi, respectively). CP noninvariance at a generic point of QMS manifests itself as the electric and quark-number charge fractionalizations for the dyons; we show that the exact Seiberg-Witten solution contains such effects correctly, in agreement with the semiclassical analysis recently made by F.Ferrari. Upon N=1 perturbation the low energy effective theories at the singularities display confinement, and in most cases chiral symmetry breaking as a consequence. In one of the vacua for N_f=3 confinement is not accompanied by chiral symmetry breaking: we interpret it as an example of oblique confinement of 't Hooft. We discuss further the consistency of the physical picture found here by studying the effects of soft supersymmetry breaking as well as the behavior of the theory in the N=1 limit.Comment: 38 pages, LaTex file with 3 PostScript figure

A case of rhinocerebral mucormycosis with brain abscess drained by endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery

A 70-year-old Japanese man undergoing remission induction therapy for acute monocytic leukemia (AML-M5b) developed fever and headache, and was started on antibiotics and liposomal amphotericin B (L-AMB). There was no improvement, and computed tomography and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging revealed acute rhinosinusitis and brain abscess. Successful endoscopic endonasal surgery was performed at this point, providing drainage for the rhinosinusitis and abscess. Histopathological findings showed the mucormycosis
