    Right Prefrontal Activity Reflects the Ability to Overcome Sleepiness during Working Memory Tasks: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study

    It has been speculated that humans have an inherent ability to overcome sleepiness that counteracts homeostatic sleep pressure. However, it remains unclear which cortical substrate activities are involved in the ability to overcome sleepiness during the execution of cognitive tasks. Here we sought to confirm that this ability to overcome sleepiness in task execution improves performance on cognitive tasks, showing activation of neural substrates in the frontal cortex, by using a modified n-back (2- and 0-back) working memory task and functional near-infrared spectroscopy. The change in alertness was just correlated with performances on the 2-back task. Activity in the right prefrontal cortex changed depending on alertness changes on the 2- and 0-back tasks independently, which indicates that activity in this region clearly reflects the ability to overcome sleepiness; it may contribute to the function of providing sufficient activity to meet the task load demands. This study reveals characteristics of the ability to overcome sleepiness during the n-back working memory task which goes beyond the attention-control function traditionally proposed

    Ellis–van Creveld syndrome is an autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia that is characterized by thoracic hypoplasia, polydactyly, oral abnormalities, and congenital heart disease.     Schools across Japan have been temporarily closed since March 2, 2020 in order to control the spread of the COVID-19 infection. Amid concerns about the prolonged use of the Internet and smartphones, we conducted a survey of media contact among parents of elementary school children in the midst of the epidemic. The purpose of this study is to pursue the factors that led to the increase in media contact among children. As a result, “spending time alone at home” increases media contact the most, but it also increases when children were with their parents or grandparents. There is no statistically significant relationship between the new device used and the increase or decrease in media contact. In addition, the factor that suppresses media contact is “physical activity in parks and other outdoor places.” It is suggested that even during special periods such as temporary school closures, media contact may be suppressed by performing non-media contact activities as usual

    北海道礼文華峠におけるブナ分布北限域孤立個体群の立地と植生

    筆者らはブナの分布北限域における最前線孤立個体群を太平洋から水平距離で2.5km内陸に位置する豊浦町礼文華峠の岩峰上及びその周辺で発見した.これはブナの天然分布個体群の中でも太平洋側における最北限の個体群であると考えられた。付近のアメダスのデータによれば,年平均気温7.3 ℃,年降水量1,198 mm,最大積雪深85cmであった.現地の暖かさの指数WIは52.5℃・月と推定された.ブナの分布,植生と立地の状況を明らかにするために現地調査を行った結果,以下の知見を得た.(1)岩峰上に生育する胸高以上のブナは約1.7 haの範囲(標高196 ~ 275 m)に39本生育し,胸高直径階分布は緩やかなL字型を示し,10 cm以下の個体が最多であった.(2) 岩峰のブナは主にミズナラ,ホオノキ,シラカンバと混生し,競合する針葉樹は記録されなかった.(3) 植物群落の種構成は日本海側に成立するブナ林に類似していた.(4) 土壌pHはやや酸性で5.4 ~ 5.5であり,無機態窒素は全国のブナ林の値と大きな違いはなかった.以上の知見から,礼文華峠の岩峰上のブナ個体群は,その生育に適した気候条件に加え,本州の岩峰などでしばしば優占する針葉樹類が不在であるなどの条件が重なって成立したと考えられた

    Nationwide surveillance of bacterial respiratory pathogens conducted by the surveillance committee of Japanese Society of Chemotherapy, the Japanese Association for Infectious Diseases, and the Japanese Society for Clinical Microbiology in 2010: General view of the pathogens\u27 antibacterial susceptibility

    The nationwide surveillance on antimicrobial susceptibility of bacterial respiratory pathogens from patients in Japan, was conducted by Japanese Society of Chemotherapy, Japanese Association for Infectious Diseases and Japanese Society for Clinical Microbiology in 2010.The isolates were collected from clinical specimens obtained from well-diagnosed adult patients with respiratory tract infections during the period from January and April 2010 by three societies. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was conducted at the central reference laboratory according to the method recommended by Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institutes using maximum 45 antibacterial agents.Susceptibility testing was evaluable with 954 strains (206 Staphylococcus aureus, 189 Streptococcus pneumoniae, 4 Streptococcus pyogenes, 182 Haemophilus influenzae, 74 Moraxella catarrhalis, 139 Klebsiella pneumoniae and 160 Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Ratio of methicillin-resistant S.aureus was as high as 50.5%, and those of penicillin-intermediate and -resistant S.pneumoniae were 1.1% and 0.0%, respectively. Among H.influenzae, 17.6% of them were found to be β-lactamase-non-producing ampicillin (ABPC)-intermediately resistant, 33.5% to be β-lactamase-non-producing ABPC-resistant and 11.0% to be β-lactamase-producing ABPC-resistant strains. Extended spectrum β-lactamase-producing K.pneumoniae and multi-drug resistant P.aeruginosa with metallo β-lactamase were 2.9% and 0.6%, respectively.Continuous national surveillance of antimicrobial susceptibility of respiratory pathogens is crucial in order to monitor changing patterns of susceptibility and to be able to update treatment recommendations on a regular basis

    Discutindo a educação ambiental no cotidiano escolar: desenvolvimento de projetos na escola formação inicial e continuada de professores

    A presente pesquisa buscou discutir como a Educação Ambiental (EA) vem sendo trabalhada, no Ensino Fundamental e como os docentes desta escola compreendem e vem inserindo a EA no cotidiano escolar., em uma escola estadual do município de Tangará da Serra/MT, Brasil. Para tanto, realizou-se entrevistas com os professores que fazem parte de um projeto interdisciplinar de EA na escola pesquisada. Verificou-se que o projeto da escola não vem conseguindo alcançar os objetivos propostos por: desconhecimento do mesmo, pelos professores; formação deficiente dos professores, não entendimento da EA como processo de ensino-aprendizagem, falta de recursos didáticos, planejamento inadequado das atividades. A partir dessa constatação, procurou-se debater a impossibilidade de tratar do tema fora do trabalho interdisciplinar, bem como, e principalmente, a importância de um estudo mais aprofundado de EA, vinculando teoria e prática, tanto na formação docente, como em projetos escolares, a fim de fugir do tradicional vínculo “EA e ecologia, lixo e horta”.Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació
