In-situ laser tagging of barium ions in liquid xenon for the EXO experiment
2012 Spring.Includes bibliographical references. The goal of the Enriched Xenon Observatory (EXO) collaboration is to measure the half-life of neutrino-less double beta decay using a ton size liquid 136Xe detector with zero back-ground. Zero background detection can only be achieved if the daughter nucleus, 136Ba, can be tagged. The EXO collaboration is investigating several techniques to tag the 136Ba daughter. The goal of this thesis is to investigate the prospects of directly observing a single 136Ba+ ion in the liquid using a laser aimed at the decay site, hence in-situ laser tagging. Because the energy levels of Ba+ ions are expected to be altered from the vacuum configuration, in-situ laser tagging can only be accomplished if the spectroscopy of the Ba+ ions in liquid xenon is understood. An ultra-pure liquid xenon test apparatus with a liquid xenon purity monitor has been built to study the spectroscopy of the Ba+ ions. An unexpected discovery of the nonresonant multiphoton ionization of liquid xenon using pulsed UV lasers was made while characterizing the purity monitor. The discovery was vital to the ability to accurately measure the purity of the liquid xenon. The spectroscopy of Ba+ ions in liquid xenon and the multiphoton ionization studies are the two key topics that are presented in this thesis
Impact of Mindfulness Practice on Compassion Fatigue in Pediatric Cardiovascular Critical Care Nurses: A Quality Improvement Project
Background: A considerable proportion of the extant literature on healthcare has documented compassion fatigue (CF) as a major factor that contributes to poor job performance, satisfaction, and negative patient outcomes (Figley, 2002). CF is well known to negatively impact patient care and outcome, relationships, and job satisfaction among pediatric cardiovascular intensive care (CVICU) nurses. Developing interventions to reduce burnout and CF bear the potential to reduce costs and improve quality care; one particularly promising approach in this regard is the practice of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR). Purpose: This quality improvement project aimed to determine the impact of an abbreviated MBSR program delivered through a mobile application intended to help the pediatric CVICU nurses identify and target the symptoms of CF. Method: This project implemented a six-week MBSR program, delivered via the mindfulness smartphone-based application Insight Timer with a group of pediatric CVICU nurses. Result: A total of 15 participants completed this project. The participants’ burnout and stress scores decreased, while their mindfulness and compassion scores increased after the project was completed. Participants’ reflections revealed that they became aware of their emotions and the variables contributing to their emotional distress. Conclusion: The abbreviated MBSR curriculum demonstrated an innovative but practical platform utilizing a mobile application shown to help busy CVICU nurses. Conclusively, the project showed that MBSR was effective in alleviating fatigue and cultivating nurses\u27 emotional well-being
Corporate Crocodile Tears? On the Reactive Attitudes of Corporate Agents
Recently, a number of people have argued that certain entities embodied by groups of agents themselves qualify as agents, with their own beliefs, desires, and intentions; even, some claim, as moral agents. However, others have independently argued that fully-fledged moral agency involves a capacity for reactive attitudes such as guilt and indignation, and these capacities might seem beyond the ken of “collective” or “ corporate ” agents. Individuals embodying such agents can of course be ashamed, proud, or indignant about what the agent has done. But just as an entity needs to have its own beliefs, desires, and intentions to qualify as a bona fide agent, the required capacity for reactive attitudes is a capacity to have one’s own reactive attitudes. If fully-fledged moral agency requires reactive attitudes, the corporate agent must itself be capable of guilt and indignation. In this paper, we argue that at least certain corporate agents are. Or, more precisely, we argue that if there are bona fide corporate agents, these agents can have the capacities that are both associated with guilt and indignation and plausibly required for moral agency; in particular certain epistemic and motivational capacitie
"It's like you have to fit in either way in both cultures. You have to find a way in between": An exploration of young immigrant women's experiences negotiating cultures in Norway
A solução desses problemas remete à diminuição de custos logísticos, melhorando a competitividade das empresasAbstract: Arc routing problems aim to find minimum cost routes that visit a subset of arcs of a graph, with one or more side constraints. This thesis studies three NP-hard arc routing problems: (1) the capacitated arc routing problem (CARP); (2) the open capacitated arc routing problem (OCARP); and (3) the covering Chinese postman problem (CCPP). We present mathematical formulations and heuristic and exact methods to computationally solve these problems: (i) a greedy and randomized constructive heuristic is proposed for the CARP; (ii) a hybrid genetic algorithm metaheuristic and two linear integer programming lower bound methods, one based on branch-and-cut and one based on flow networks, are proposed for the OCARP; and (iii) an exact branch-and-cut method with valid inequalities and a constructive heuristic are proposed for the CCPP. Extensive computational experiments using benchmark instances were performed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed methods in comparison to the previous methods, regarding both quality of solutions and processing time. Our results show that the proposed methods are state-of-the-art. The studied problems have many relevant practical applications: the CARP has applications on urban waste collection and snow removal; the OCARP has applications on the routing of meter readers and the cutting of metal sheets; and last, the CCPP has applications on automated meter readers routing. The solution of these problems leads to the reduction of logistics costs, improving businesses competitivenessDoutoradoCiência da ComputaçãoDoutor em Ciência da Computação2016/00315-0FAPES
