Termination of psychotherapy : the relationship between the termination process, judgements of the client's need for further treatment and psychotherapy outcome : a thesis presented in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Psychology at Massey University

This study was based on the data gained from eighty one terminating clients and their therapists at a university Psychological Services Centre. The study investigated the frequency with which clients and therapists agreed about three components of the termination process and if agreement was related to client outcome. The three components of termination investigated were, the reasons therapy was terminated, the mutuality of termination and the degree of need for further therapy. Client narrative responses to the question "Why is your therapy ending?" were coded into categories of reason and mutuality of termination. Raters reliably coded the majority of narrative answers. No difference in the ability of raters to make a coding with regard to the raters experience in Clinical Psychology was found. In approximately fifty percent of cases, therapists and clients did not agree about these three components of termination. It was also found that in those cases where there was agreement, the clients had better psychological outcomes, than in cases where there was no agreement

Ghost direction detection and other innovations for Ms. Pac-Man

Ms. Pac-Man was developed in the 1980s, becoming one of the most popular arcade games of its time. It still has a significant following today and has recently attracted the attention of artificial intelligence researchers, in part, due to the fact that the agent must react in real time in order to navigate its way through the maze. Rapides établissement et examen effectués en collaboration des compétences requises dans les programmes de résidence en médecine familiale durant la pandémie de la COVID-19

Background: In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted competency-based medical education in Family Medicine programs across Canada. Faculty and residents identified a need for clear, relevant, and specific competencies to frame teaching, learning, supervision and feedback during the pandemic. Methods: A rapid, iterative, educational quality improvement process was launched. Phase 1 involved experienced educators defining gaps in our program’s existing competency-database, reviewing emerging public health and regulatory guidelines, and drafting competencies. Phase 2 involved translation, member-checking, and anonymous feedback and editing of draft competencies by residents and other educational leaders. Phase 3 involved wider dissemination, collaborative editing and feedback from residents and faculty throughout the department. Results: A total of 44 physicians including residents and faculty from multiple contexts provided detailed feedback, review, and editing of an ultimate list of 33 competencies organized by CanMEDS-FM roles. Broad agreement was obtained that the competencies form reasonable learning outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions: These competencies represent learning objectives reflecting the initial educational mindsets of a wide range of teachers and learners experiencing a global pandemic. The project illustrates a novel collaboration across educational portfolios as a rapid educational response to a public health crisis

Adaptability of a Catalog Spacecraft Bus to Diverse Science Missions

Over the past decade, the concept of using “offthe- shelf” Spacecraft (SC) buses for space science and earth science missions has become widespread. A “common bus” design approach has been used for Geosynchronous (GEO) communications satellites since the early 1970’s. The success of using common bus designs for the manufacture of GEO communications satellites is due to the commonality of mission requirements and orbit geometry. Science missions, on the other hand, each have unique mission and instrument payload requirements that can vary widely, encompassing orbit geometry, instrument type and configuration, science target, SC attitude, operations concept, and launch scenario. One of the most visible and successful implementations of “off-the-shelf” SC for science applications is the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Rapid Spacecraft Development Office (RSDO) catalog, first released in 1997. In the current catalog (Rapid II), there are twenty-three different SC buses manufactured by eight aerospace companies. This paper provides a case study describing the adaptation of Spectrum Astro’s SA-200HP (High Performance) RSDO catalog SC bus to two very different Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) science missions, Coriolis and Swift, which were both procured via the RSDO. Coriolis is a Department-of-Defense-sponsored sunsynchronous earth observation satellite whose primary instrument, WindSat, is designed to precisely measure the ocean surface wind vector. Swift is a low inclination NASA Medium Explorer (MIDEX) mission to detect and characterize Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). The Swift Observatory carries three separate telescopes. In addition to describing how the catalog SC bus was applied to these missions, this paper discusses the unique features and benefits of the catalog bus approach to both the procuring agency and the industry bus provider. Misconceptions associated with the use of the catalog bus approach are also discussed

Developing Cost-Effective Inspection Sampling Plans for Energy-Efficiency Programs at Southern California Edison

This paper summarizes the results of the development and implementation of a decision model for a major California utility company. The company’s program managers use the model to select the most cost-effective sampling inspection plan for managing a portfolio of energy-efficiency programs. The decision model can be used to evaluate the performance of possible sampling strategies based on historical data. We illustrate the application of our decision model to a specific program. We further highlight several key implementation success factors and discuss the benefits that the utility company accrued from using the decision model

The many sources effect on the genuine multihadron correlations

Here we report on a study aimed to explore the dependence of the genuine multiparticle correlations on the number of sources while the influence of other possible factors affecting the multihadron production is avoided. The analysis utilised the normalised cumulants, calculated in three-dimensional phase space, of the reaction e+e- -> Z -> hadrons using a large Monte Carlo event sample. The multi-sources reactions were simulated by overlaying a few independent single e+e- annihilation events. It was found that as the number of sources S increases, the cumulants do not change significantly their structure, but those of an order q>2 (i.e. more than 2 pions) decrease fast in their magnitude. This reduction can be understood in termsof combinatorial considerations of source mixing which dilutes the correlations by a factor of about 1/S^{q-1} which can also serve as a method to estimated the number of sources. This expected suppression is well reproduced by recent cumulant measurements in hadron and nucleus induced reactions both in one (rapidity) and two (rapidity vs. azimuthal angle) dimensions. The diminishing genuine correlations effect should also appear in other dynamical correlations like the Bose-Einstein in e+e- -> W+W- -> hadrons and in nucleus-nucleus reactions.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figs.
