Faster Sparse Suffix Sorting
The sparse suffix sorting problem is to sort b=o(n) arbitrary suffixes of a string of length n using o(n) words of space in addition to the string. We present an O(n) time Monte Carlo algorithm using O(b.log(b)) space and an O(n.log(b)) time Las Vegas algorithm using O(b) space. This is a significant improvement over the best prior solutions of [Bille et al., ICALP 2013]: a Monte Carlo algorithm running in O(n.log(b)) time and O(b^(1+e)) space or O(n.log^2(b)) time and O(b) space, and a Las Vegas algorithm running in O(n.log^2(b)+b^2.log(b)) time and O(b) space. All the above results are obtained with high probability not just in expectation
Strong exciton-plasmon coupling in semiconducting carbon nanotubes
We study theoretically the interactions of excitonic states with surface
electromagnetic modes of small-diameter (~1 nm) semiconducting single-walled
carbon nanotubes. We show that these interactions can result in strong
exciton-surface-plasmon coupling. The exciton absorption line shape exhibits
Rabi splitting ~0.1 eV as the exciton energy is tuned to the nearest interband
surface plasmon resonance of the nanotube. We also show that the quantum
confined Stark effect may be used as a tool to control the exciton binding
energy and the nanotube band gap in carbon nanotubes in order, e.g., to bring
the exciton total energy in resonance with the nearest interband plasmon mode.
The exciton-plasmon Rabi splitting we predict here for an individual carbon
nanotube is close in its magnitude to that previously reported for hybrid
plasmonic nanostructures artificially fabricated of organic semiconductors on
metallic films. We expect this effect to open up paths to new tunable
optoelectronic device applications of semiconducting carbon nanotubes.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, accepted for PR

Localized inhibition of protein phosphatase 1 by NUAK1 promotes spliceosome activity and reveals a MYC-sensitive feedback control of transcription.
Deregulated expression of MYC induces a dependence on the NUAK1 kinase, but the molecular mechanisms underlying this dependence have not been fully clarified. Here, we show that NUAK1 is a predominantly nuclear protein that associates with a network of nuclear protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) interactors and that PNUTS, a nuclear regulatory subunit of PP1, is phosphorylated by NUAK1. Both NUAK1 and PNUTS associate with the splicing machinery. Inhibition of NUAK1 abolishes chromatin association of PNUTS, reduces spliceosome activity, and suppresses nascent RNA synthesis. Activation of MYC does not bypass the requirement for NUAK1 for spliceosome activity but significantly attenuates transcription inhibition. Consequently, NUAK1 inhibition in MYC-transformed cells induces global accumulation of RNAPII both at the pause site and at the first exon-intron boundary but does not increase mRNA synthesis. We suggest that NUAK1 inhibition in the presence of deregulated MYC traps non-productive RNAPII because of the absence of correctly assembled spliceosomes
Ghost excitonic insulator transition in layered graphite
Some unusual properties of layered graphite, including a linear energy
dependence of the quasiparticle damping and weak ferromagnetism at low doping,
are explained as a result of the proximity of a single graphene sheet to the
excitonic insulator phase which can be further stabilized in a doped system of
many layers stacked in the staggered () configuration
Indication of Superconductivity at 35 K in Graphite-Sulfur Composites
We report magnetization measurements performed on graphite--sulfur composites
which demonstrate a clear superconducting behavior below the critical
temperature T = 35 K. The Meissner-Ochsenfeld effect, screening
supercurrents, and magnetization hysteresis loops characteristic of type-II
superconductors were measured. The results indicate that the superconductivity
occurs in a small sample fraction, possibly related to the sample surface.Comment: published versio
Implantacja dwujamowego układu stymulującego przez przetrwałą żyłę główną górną lewą
Przetrwała lewa żyła główna górna występuje u ok. 0,5% populacji. Jej obecność zazwyczaj nie
stanowi problemu klinicznego, jednak może powodować trudności podczas implantacji układu
stymulującego serca. W niniejszej pracy opisano przypadek wszczepienia 2-jamowego układu
stymulującego przez przetrwałą lewą żyłę główną górną u 79-letniej pacjentki z objawowym
blokiem przedsionkowo-komorowym III°. Podczas zabiegu prowadnik wprowadzony do lewej
żyły podobojczykowej przesuwał się wzdłuż lewego brzegu kręgosłupa. W flebografii uwidoczniono
przetrwałą lewą żyłę główną górną uchodzącą do zatoki wieńcowej. Standardowe elektrody
o biernej fiksacji umieszczono w koniuszku prawej komory i na ścianie górno-bocznej
prawego przedsionka.
Zastosowanie elektrod o biernej fiksacji
pozwala uniknąć ryzyka perforacji prawego przedsionka i nie zwiększa ryzyka dyslokacji
