    Development of an orthotropic hole element

    A finite element was developed which adequately represents the state of stress in the region around a circular hole in orthotropic material experiencing reasonably general loading. This was achieved with a complementary virtual work formulation of the stiffness and stress matrices for a square element with center circular hole. The assumed stress state provides zero shearing stress on the hole boundary, so the element is suitable for problems involving load transfer without friction. The element has been implemented in the NASTRAN computer program, and sample problem results are presented

    Density of bulk trap states in organic semiconductor crystals: discrete levels induced by oxygen in rubrene

    The density of trap states in the bandgap of semiconducting organic single crystals has been measured quantitatively and with high energy resolution by means of the experimental method of temperature-dependent space-charge-limited-current spectroscopy (TD-SCLC). This spectroscopy has been applied to study bulk rubrene single crystals, which are shown by this technique to be of high chemical and structural quality. A density of deep trap states as low as ~ 10^{15} cm^{-3} is measured in the purest crystals, and the exponentially varying shallow trap density near the band edge could be identified (1 decade in the density of states per ~25 meV). Furthermore, we have induced and spectroscopically identified an oxygen related sharp hole bulk trap state at 0.27 eV above the valence band.Comment: published in Phys. Rev.     An active experiment has been conducted in space that allows a test for the theory of nonlinear development of striations in large barium clouds. The results are in excellent agreement with a computer simulation of the ExB instability reported by Scannapiecoe t al. (1976). The power law irregularity spectrum predicted by the theory and verified by the experiment is shown here to be due to wave steepeninga nd not_top lasmat urbulence.T he barium cloud resultsa re remarkably similar to bottomside equatorial spread F. A possible role of the E x B instability in bottomside equatorial spread F is discussed as a supplement to the Rayleigh-Taylor instability during the postsunset rise of the F layer and during anomalousp lasma uplifts which occur during geomagneticallya ctive period

    Consequences of Weight Cycling: An Increase in Disease Risk?

    Research indicates that weight cycling, or “yo-yo dieting” is a common occurrence in obese populations. The long term negative health consequences of weight cycling are debated and it is unclear whether or not this weight change pattern poses a greater disease risk compared to obesity maintenance. This review discusses the prevalence of weight cycling and physiological alterations occurring during weight loss that promotes weight regain. We also discuss the effect weight regain has upon adipose tissue in terms of rate and type of accumulation. Also within this review are discussions surrounding the previously published literature based upon human and rodent research. We focus on previous limitations and difference in experimental design that have perhaps resulted in mixed findings concerning independent effects of weight cycling on health parameters. The final purpose of this review is to discuss future directions in evaluating the pro-inflammatory response to weight cycling in order to compare the disease risk compared to obesity maintenance

    Scanning Electron Microscopic Observations on Differentiation and Maintenance of Photoreceptor Cells in Vitro

    Scanning electron microscopy was performed on cell cultures of embryonic and post-hatch chick retinas co-cultured with optic lobe neurons or in medium that had been pre-conditioned with optic lobe cells. The culture medium consisted of Eagles Basal Medium supplemented with glucose, fetal calf serum, glutamine and bicarbonate. Application of colchicine (SÎĽg/ml) to the cultures, encouraged the dissociation of retinal cell rosettes and optic lobe neuron aggregates, thereby allowing us to examine differentiation of isolated photoreceptor cells. Over time, developing photoreceptor cells gradually took on the morphological characteristics of rods and cones in the post-hatch chick: cells were polarized having a single neurite on one end of the cell and inner and outer segment-like structures on the other end. Developing cone cells elaborated an oil droplet and filopodial-like processes at the apical end of the inner segment. The latter may correspond to the calycal processes which normally envelop the basal 1/3 of the outer segment. The sequence of events noted in vitro parallel those previously reported in vivo

    Post impact evaluation of an E-learning cross-infection control CD-ROM provided to all general dental practitioners in England

    Aim To carry out a post-impact evaluation of a cross-infection control CD-ROM, developed for NHS dental teams as a continuing professional development e-learning tool. The program was commissioned by the Department of Health and developed by a project team through the UK Committee of Postgraduate Dental Deans. The Dental Practice Boardhad originally sent one copy of the CD-ROM to each dental practice in England in 2004. Method A quantitative statistical analysis of the results of 326 online respondents to the learning package and a survey of 118 dental practitioners drawn from the Dental Practice Board database. Results Practitioners felt the CD-ROM in this instance was well designed and appropriate for their needs. It is inclusive and accessible to a wide range of dental professionals including nurses and hygienists. Conclusions This form of continuing professional development is popular with dental practitioners, although it should not be the only form of continuing professional development available. However, whilst the project was generally regarded as successful, there were problems with the distribution of the CD-ROM. This suggests that anonline resource should be made available in the future
