Fact Sheet on Women\u27s Studies Programs in 1977
1. There are now 276 women\u27s studies programs on college and university campuses in the United States. The growth rate of these programs in the last 18 months was 80 percent.
2. Women\u27s studies programs can be found in the District of Columbia and in all but nine of the 50 states. Those states without programs are Alaska, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, North Dakota, Rhode Island, West Virginia, and Wyoming
Predoctoral Interns\u27 Nondisclosure in Supervision
In interviews with 14 counseling center predoctoral interns regarding a significant nondisclosure in supervision, eight interns reported good supervisory relationships and six indicated that they experienced problematic supervisory relationships. Nondisclosures for the interns in good supervisory relationships related to personal reactions to clients, whereas nondisclosures for interns in problematic supervisory relationships related to global dissatisfaction with the supervisory relationship. In both groups, interns mentioned concerns about evaluation and negative feelings as typical reasons for nondisclosure. Additional reasons for nondisclosure for interns in problematic supervision were power dynamics, inhibiting demographic or cultural variables, and the supervisor\u27s theoretical orientation. Both groups described negative effects of nondisclosure on themselves and their relationships with clients. Interns in problematic supervision also reported that nondisclosures had negative effects on the supervisory relationship

New Insights from Seafloor Mapping of a Hawaiian Marine Monument
On 15 June 2006, when U.S. President George W. Bush signed the proclamation creating the PapahÄnaumokuÄkea Marine National Monument (PMNM), he probably wasnât thinking about underwater morphology. To fully understand the coral reefs and marine ecosystems that the monument was created to protect, however, scientists need to have a detailed picture of the seafloor features, home to corals and other species, as well as the geologic history of the area.
Thanks to a recent, multi-institution expedition, such a seafloor features that will not only inform conservation efforts but also enable geologists and geophysicists to revise their understanding of Hawaiiâs complex geologic past.
Specifically, data should help scientists answer fundamental questions about the areaâs regional geology. For instance, which seamounts were truly formed because of Hawaiian hotspot volcanism, and which seamounts were not

Bifidobacterium animalis AHC7 protects against pathogen-induced NF-ÎșB activation in vivo
BACKGROUND: Bifidobacteria and lactobacilli are among the early and important colonizers of the gastrointestinal tract and are generally considered to be part of a normal, healthy microbiota. It is believed that specific strains within the microbiota can influence host immune-reactivity and may play a role in protection from infection and aberrant inflammatory activity. One such strain, Bifidobacterium animalis AHC7, has been previously shown to protect against Salmonella typhimurium infection in mice and helps resolve acute idiopathic diarrhea in dogs. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential molecular and cellular mechanisms underpinning the Bifidobacterium animalis AHC7 protective effect.
RESULTS: Following 4 hours of infection with Salmonella typhimurium, NF-ÎșB activation was significantly elevated in vivo in placebo and Enterococcus faecium-fed animals while Bifidobacterium animalis AHC7 consumption significantly attenuated the NF-ÎșB response. In vitro anti-CD3/CD28 stimulated Peyer's patch cells secreted significantly less TNF-α and IFN-Îł following Bifidobacterium animalis AHC7 consumption. Stimulated cells released more IL-12p70 but this difference did not reach statistical significance. No alteration in mucosal IL-6, IL-10 or MCP-1 levels were observed. No statistically significant change in the cytokine profile of mesenteric lymph node cells was noted. In vitro, Bifidobacterium animalis AHC7 was bound by dendritic cells and induced secretion of both IL-10 and IL-12p70. In addition, co-culture of CD4+ T cells with Bifidobacterium animalis AHC7-stimulated dendritic cells resulted in a significant increase in CD25+Foxp3+ T cell numbers.
CONCLUSION: Bifidobacterium animalis AHC7 exerts an anti-inflammatory effect via the attenuation of pro-inflammatory transcription factor activation in response to an infectious insult associated with modulation of pro-inflammatory cytokine production within the mucosa. The cellular mechanism underpinning Bifidobacterium animalis AHC7 mediated attenuation of NF-ÎșB activation may include recognition of the bacterium by dendritic cells and induction of CD25+Foxp3+ T cells
