    Mimesis stories: composing new nature music for the shakuhachi

    Nature is a widespread theme in much new music for the shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute). This article explores the significance of such music within the contemporary shakuhachi scene, as the instrument travels internationally and so becomes rooted in landscapes outside Japan, taking on the voices of new creatures and natural phenomena. The article tells the stories of five compositions and one arrangement by non-Japanese composers, first to credit composers’ varied and personal responses to this common concern and, second, to discern broad, culturally syncretic traditions of nature mimesis and other, more abstract, ideas about the naturalness of sounds and creative processes (which I call musical naturalism). Setting these personal stories and longer histories side by side reveals that composition creates composers (as much as the other way around). Thus it hints at much broader terrain: the refashioning of human nature at the confluence between cosmopolitan cultural circulations and contemporary encounters with the more-than-human world

    Regional and temporal variability in Puget Sound zooplankton: bottom-up links to juvenile salmon

    We use data from the Puget Sound Zooplankton Monitoring Program to explore patterns of spatial and interannual variability in zooplankton communities in response to environmental change during 2014-2017. This program is a collaborative effort involving 10 tribal, county, state, federal, academic, and nonprofit entities initiated via the Salish Sea Marine Survival Project with the goal of understanding the key role of zooplankton in food webs and ecosystems. Large interannual differences in the environment over this period strong effects on zooplankton community structure and abundance. 2014 began as a fairly normal year in Puget Sound until the Pacific Warm Anomaly event nicknamed “The Blob” began to affect the region during late summer and fall. Unprecedented warm anomalies occurred in summer 2015, persisting through 2016. Off the coast of Washington and Oregon, clear effects on zooplankton community structure were observed, with rare oceanic species occurring in coastal samples concurrent with decreased overall biomass. In sharp contrast, few rare species were collected in Puget Sound, and zooplankton increased in 2015 and 2016 relative to 2014, including increases in nearly all taxa that are important juvenile salmon prey. A few taxa, most notably the dinoflagellate Noctiluca and numerous species of small jellyfish, decreased during the warm years, and shifts in the seasonal phenology of some taxa were observed. These and other findings from the Puget Sound Zooplankton Monitoring Program will be presented in the context of the implications of environmental change for juvenile salmon growth and survival

    The Electronic Influence of Ring Substituents and Ansa Bridges in Zirconocene Complexes as Probed by Infrared Spectroscopic, Electrochemical, and Computational Studies

    The electronic influence of unbridged and ansa-bridged ring substituents on a zirconocene center has been studied by means of IR spectroscopic, electrochemical, and computational methods. With respect to IR spectroscopy, the average of the symmetric and asymmetric stretches (ν_(CO(av))) of a large series of dicarbonyl complexes (Cp^R)_2Zr(CO)_2 has been used as a probe of the electronic influence of a cyclopentadienyl ring substituent. For unbridged substituents (Me, Et, Pri, But, SiMe_3), ν_(CO(av)) on a per substituent basis correlates well with Hammett σ_(meta) parameters, thereby indicating that the influence of these substituents is via a simple inductive effect. In contrast, the reduction potentials (E°) of the corresponding dichloride complexes (Cp^R)_2ZrCl_2 do not correlate well with Hammett σ_(meta) parameters, thereby suggesting that factors other than the substituent inductive effect also influence E°. Ansa bridges with single-atom linkers, for example [Me_2C] and [Me_2Si], exert a net electron-withdrawing effect, but the effect is diminished upon increasing the length of the bridge. Indeed, with a linker comprising a three-carbon chain, the [CH_2CH_2CH_2] ansa bridge becomes electron-donating. In contrast to the electron-withdrawing effect observed for a single [Me_2Si] ansa bridge, a pair of vicinal [Me_2Si] ansa bridges exerts an electron-donating effect relative to that from the single bridge. DFT calculations demonstrate that the electron-withdrawing effect of the [Me_2C] and [Me_2Si] ansa-bridges is due to stabilization of the cyclopentadienyl ligand acceptor orbital, which subsequently enhances back-donation from the metal. The calculations also indicate that the electron-donating effect of two vicinal [Me_2Si] ansa bridges, relative to that of a single bridge, is a result of it enforcing a ligand conformation that reduces back-donation from the metal

    Floor systems for implementing monetary policy : some unpleasant fiscal arithmetic

    An increasing number of central banks implement monetary policy via a channel system or a floor system. We construct a general equilibrium model to study the properties of these systems. We find that a floor system is weakly optimal if and only if the target rate satisfies the Friedman rule. Unfortunately, the optimal floor system requires either transfers from the fiscal authority to the central bank or a reduction in seigniorage payments from the central bank to the government. This is the unpleasant fiscal arithmetic of a floor system.
