    Spreading News in 1904. The Media Coverage of Nikolay Bobrikov's Shooting

    The assassination of Nikolay Bobrikov, the Governor-General of Finland, on 16 June 1904 was a turning point in Finnish history. It was reported in hundreds, if not thousands, of newspapers worldwide. This article follows the spread of that news, particularly its spread over the first week after the assassination. The study draws on the digital newspaper repositories in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Mexico, Sweden, the Netherlands and the United States. It also draws on the microfilm and physical collections of Russian newspapers at the National Library of Finland. The article shows how the murder activated the telegram network and initiated a series of news waves. The routes the Bobrikov news travelled, their tempo and the evolution of related stories tell a story of a networked but biased global news scene. In that scene, technological, commercial and cultural factors simultaneously facilitated and controlled what stories reached which papers and how.</p

    Photoredox Catalysts Based on Earth-abundant Metal Complexes

The principal photocatalysts used are based on rare and toxic ruthenium(II) and iridium(III) complexes. This critical review focusses on Earth-abundant metal complexes as potential replacement photocatalysts and summarizes the use of photoactive Cu(I), Zn(II), Ni(0), V(V), Zr(IV), W(0), W(VI), Mo(0), Cr(III) , Co(III) and Fe(II) complexes in photoredox reactions. The optoelectronic properties of these complexes and relevant structurally related analogs, not yet used for photoredox catalysis, are disccussed in combination with the reaction scope reported for each photocatalyst.     The Virtual Sociality of Rights: The Case of Women\u27s Rights are Human Rights

    This essay traces the relationship between activists and academics involved in the campaign for women\u27s rights as human rights as a case study of the relationship between different classes of what I call knowledge professionals self-consciously acting in a transnational domain. The puzzle that animates this essay is the following: how was it that at the very moment at which a critique of rights and a reimagination of rights as rights talk proved to be such fertile ground for academic scholarship did the same rights prove to be an equally fertile ground for activist networking and lobbying activities? The paper answers this question with respect to the work of self-reflexivity in creating a virtual sociality of rights

    Significance of vascular endothelial growth factor in growth and peritoneal dissemination of ovarian cancer

    Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a key regulator of angiogenesis which drives endothelial cell survival, proliferation, and migration while increasing vascular permeability. Playing an important role in the physiology of normal ovaries, VEGF has also been implicated in the pathogenesis of ovarian cancer. Essentially by promoting tumor angiogenesis and enhancing vascular permeability, VEGF contributes to the development of peritoneal carcinomatosis associated with malignant ascites formation, the characteristic feature of advanced ovarian cancer at diagnosis. In both experimental and clinical studies, VEGF levels have been inversely correlated with survival. Moreover, VEGF inhibition has been shown to inhibit tumor growth and ascites production and to suppress tumor invasion and metastasis. These findings have laid the basis for the clinical evaluation of agents targeting VEGF signaling pathway in patients with ovarian cancer.
