EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON COUPLING BEAMS WITH STEEL DAMPERS IN MID-SPAN - Coupling beam dampers with low yield point steel (Part 1) -
RC shear walls coupled with beams are becoming widely used for high-rise buildings in Japan. Since short-span coupling beams are subjected to large displacement during an earthquake, high ductility and excellent energy absorption performance are required.RC coupling beams with low-yield-point steel damper in the mid-span (coupling beam damper) have been developed and experimentally investigated in this study. Steel dampers in the mid-span are embedded into the RC beams at the both ends, and embedded lengths are ranging from 2 to 3.5 times as long as steel depth. The coupling beam dampers provide the stable hysteretic performance up to 1/20 of drift angle, and equivalent damping coefficients of 20 to 30%. Sufficient amount of shear reinforcement needs to be arranged, so as to transfer shear force from steel damper to RC beams. Shear reinforcements are more effective when arranged in the tip of RC beams.カテゴリー
RESTORING FORCE CHARACTERISTICS OF COUPLING BEAM DAMPERS - Coupling beam dampers with low yield point steel (Part 2) -
RC coupling beams with low-yield-point steel web panel in the mid-span (coupling beam damper) have been developed and applied to actual buildings. Cyclic loading tests had been performed, resulting that the coupling beam dampers provided the stable hysteretic performance and load carrying capacity did not deteriorate up to 1/20 of drift angle. In this paper, finite element analysis has been carried out to evaluate the shear buckling strength of the coupling beam damper. It is verified that the low-yield-point steel web panel (with width-thick ratio of about 15) of the coupling beam damper is thick enough to avoid shear buckling. Restoring force characteristics of the coupling beam dampers for structural design is also proposed. An appropriate modeling of RC parts is important to represent the total structural performance.カテゴリー
Quantitative Assessment of Gait Bradykinesia in Parkinson’s Disease Using a Portable Gait Rhythmogram
To quantify gait bradykinesia during daily activity in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), we measured movement-induced accelerations over more than 24h in 50 patients with PD and 17 age-matched normal controls, using a new device, the portable gait rhythmogram. Acceleration values induced by various movements, averaged each 10 min, exhibited a gamma distribution. The mean value of the distribution curve was used as an index of the "amount of overall movement per 24h". Characteristic changes were observed in both the gait cycle and gait acceleration. During hypokinesia, the gait cycle became either faster or slower. A number of patients with marked akinesia/bradykinesia showed a reduced and narrow range of gait acceleration, i.e., a range of floor reaction forces. The results suggest that assessment of the combination of changes in gait cycle and gait acceleration can quantitatively define the severity of gait bradykinesia
Ablation of the scaffold protein JLP causes reduced fertility in male mice
金沢大学がん研究所がん分子細胞制御The specific and efficient activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling modules is mediated, at least in part, by scaffold proteins. c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK)-associated leucine zipper protein (JLP) was identified as a scaffold protein for JNK and p38 MAPK signaling modules. JLP is expressed nearly ubiquitously and is involved in intracellular signaling pathways, such as the Gα13 and Cdo-mediated pathway, in vitro. To date, however, JLP expression has not been analyzed in detail, nor are its physiological functions well understood. Here we investigated the expression of JLP in the mouse testis during development. Of the tissues examined, JLP was strongest in the testis, with the most intense staining in the elongated spermatids. Since the anti-JLP antibody used in this study can recognize both JLP and sperm-associated antigen 9 (SPAG9), a splice variant of JLP that has been studied extensively in primates, we also examined its expression in macaque testis samples. Our results indicated that in mouse and primate testis, the isoform expressed at the highest level was JLP, not SPAG9. We also investigated the function of JLP by disrupting the Jlp gene in mice, and found that the male homozygotes were subfertile. Taken together, these observations may suggest that JLP plays an important role in testis during development, especially in the production of functionally normal spermatozoa. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media B.V
Real-world evidence of the impact of obesity on residual teeth in the Japanese population : A cross-sectional study
Background:Tooth loss is associated with nutritional status and significantly affects quality of life, particularly in older individuals. To date, several studies reveal that a high BMI is associated with tooth loss. However, there is a lack of large-scale studies that examined the impact of obesity on residual teeth with respect to age and tooth positions. Objective:We assessed the impact of obesity on the number and position of residual teeth by age groups using large scale of Japanese database. Methods:This was a cross-sectional study of 706150 subjects that were included in the database that combined the data from health insurance claims and health check-up, those lacking information about BMI, HbA1c level, smoking status, and the number of residual teeth were excluded. Thus, a total of 233517 aged 20-74 years were included. Subjects were classified into 4 categories based on BMI, and the number of teeth was compared between age-groups. The percentage of subjects with residual teeth in each position was compared between groups with obesity (BMI ≥25.0 kg/m2) and non-obesity. Logistic regression analysis was performed to clarify whether obesity predicts having <24 teeth. Results:Higher BMI was associated with fewer teeth over 40s (P for trend <0.0001 when <70s). Obesity was associated with the reduction of residual teeth in the maxillary; specifically, the molars were affected over the age 30. Smoking status further affected tooth loss at positions that were not affected by obesity alone. After adjusting for age, sex, smoking status, and HbA1c ≥6.5%, obesity remained an independent predictive factor for having <24 teeth (ORs: 1.35, 95% CIs: 1.30-1.40).Conclusions:We found that an increase in BMI was associated with a decrease in the number of residual teeth from younger ages independently of smoking status and diabetes in the large scale of Japanese database
Second nationwide surveillance of bacterial pathogens in patients with acute uncomplicated cystitis conducted by Japanese Surveillance Committee from 2015 to 2016: antimicrobial susceptibility of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus
The Japanese Surveillance Committee conducted a second nationwide surveillance of antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of uropathogens responsible for acute uncomplicated cystitis (AUC) in premenopausal patients aged 16–40 years old at 31 hospitals throughout Japan from March 2015 to February 2016. In this study, the susceptibility of causative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus saprophyticus) for various antimicrobial agents was investigated by isolation and culturing of organisms obtained from urine samples. In total, 324 strains were isolated from 361 patients, including E. coli (n = 220, 67.9%), S. saprophyticus (n = 36, 11.1%), and K. pneumoniae (n = 7, 2.2%). The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 20 antibacterial agents for these strains were determined according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) manual. At least 93% of the E. coli isolates showed susceptibility to fluoroquinolones and cephalosporins, whereas 100% of the S. saprophyticus isolates showed susceptibility to fluoroquinolones and aminoglycosides. The proportions of fluoroquinolone-resistant and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli strains were 6.4% (13/220) and 4.1% (9/220), respectively. The antimicrobial susceptibility of K. pneumoniae was retained during the surveillance period, while no multidrug-resistant strains were identified.
In summary, antimicrobial susceptibility results of our second nationwide surveillance did not differ significantly from those of the first surveillance. Especially the numbers of fluoroquinolone-resistant and ESBL-producing E. coli strains were not increased in premenopausal patients with AUC in Japan
The Hyper Suprime-Cam SSP survey: Overview and survey design
Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) is a wide-field imaging camera on the prime focus of the 8.2-m Subaru telescope on the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii. A team of scientists from Japan, Taiwan, and Princeton University is using HSC to carry out a 300-night multi-band imaging survey of the high-latitude sky. The survey includes three layers: the Wide layer will cover 1400 deg2 in five broad bands (grizy), with a 5 σ point-source depth of r ≈ 26. The Deep layer covers a total of 26 deg2 in four fields, going roughly a magnitude fainter, while the UltraDeep layer goes almost a magnitude fainter still in two pointings of HSC (a total of 3.5 deg2). Here we describe the instrument, the science goals of the survey, and the survey strategy and data processing. This paper serves as an introduction to a special issue of the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan, which includes a large number of technical and scientific papers describing results from the early phases of this survey
