    平成9年度~11年度に亘って、ロシアのChumlyakov教授達と「Ti-Ni系形状記憶合金単結晶におけるマルテンサイト変態と物性」について国際共同研究を行った。そのねらいは、Ti-Ni系合金が実用形状合金として最も重要なものでありながら、単結晶作成が極めて困難なため基礎研究が大変遅れていることに端を発している。ロシアのChumlyakov教授達はBridgman法を用いて、このTi-Ni系合金単結晶を作成する技術を持っており、一方我々は高エネルギー物理研究所の放射光の他、電子顕微鏡、X線回折、弾性定数測定装置などの測定手段を持つと共に、この合金系のマルテンサイト変態研究の実績を持っているので、相互に共同研究を行うことによとって、この分野の研究を十分推進できると考えたからである。研究代表者: 大塚和弘研究課題番号: 0904413

    Current Prevalence of Antimicrobial Resistance in Okayama from a National Database between 2018 and 2021

    Antimicrobial resistance is an emerging global threat that must be addressed using a multidisciplinary approach. This study aimed to raise awareness of high-level antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) pathogens in Japan by comparing their recent prevalences among prefectures, particularly Okayama. Data for the isolation proportions of meropenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium, cefotaxime-resistant Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, and levofloxacin-resistant E. coli and K. pneumoniae were collected from the Japan Nosocomial Infections Surveillance, a national database sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare, between 2018 and 2021. The average isolated proportions of the seven AMR pathogens were higher in Okayama compared to other prefectures: the worst (19.9%) was meropenem-resistant P. aeruginosa, the sixth worst (57.2%) was methicillin-resistant S. aureus, the eighth worst (3.3%) was vancomycin-resistant E. faecium, the second (37.8%) and fifth worst (17.6%) were cefotaxime-resistant E. coli and K. pneumoniae, respectively, and the fourth (49.9%) and third worst (8.7%) were levofloxacin-resistant E. coli and K. pneumoniae, respectively. Our study highlights the notably high prevalences of representative AMR pathogens in Okayama, suggesting the need for fundamental infection prevention and control by healthcare professionals, promoting antimicrobial stewardship, and educating undergraduates and postgraduates in Okayama

    Associations among workplace environment, self-regulation, and domain-specific physical activities among white-collar workers: a multilevel longitudinal study

    BackgroundPsychological and environmental determinants have been discussed for promoting physical activity among workers. However, few studies have investigated effects of both workplace environment and psychological determinants on physical activity. It is also unknown which domains of physical activities are promoted by these determinants. This study aimed to investigate main and interaction effects of workplace environment and individual self-regulation for physical activity on domain-specific physical activities among white-collar workers.MethodsA multi-site longitudinal study was conducted at baseline and about 5-month follow-up. A total of 49 worksites and employees within the worksites were recruited. Inclusion criteria for the worksites (a) were located in the Kanto area, Japan and (b) employed two or more employees. Employee inclusion criteria were (a) employed by the worksites, (b) aged 18 years or older, and (c) white-collar workers. For outcomes, three domain-specific physical activities (occupational, transport-related, and leisure-time) at baseline and follow-up were measured. For independent variables, self-regulation for physical activity, workplace environments (parking/bike, signs/bulletin boards/advertisements, stairs/elevators, physical activity/fitness facilities, work rules, written policies, and health promotion programs), and covariates at baseline were measured. Hierarchical Linear Modeling was conducted to investigate multilevel associations.ResultsOf the recruited worksites, 23 worksites and 562 employees, and 22 worksites and 459 employees completed the baseline and the follow-up surveys. As results of Hierarchical Linear Modeling, stairs/elevator (γ=3.80 [SE=1.80], p<0.05), physical activity/fitness facilities (γ=4.98 [SE=1.09], p<0.01), and written policies (γ=2.10 [SE=1.02], p<0.05) were significantly and positively associated with occupational physical activity. Self-regulation for physical activity was associated significantly with leisure-time physical activity (γ=0.09 [SE=0.04], p<0.05) but insignificantly with occupational and transport-related physical activity (γ=0.11 [SE=0.16] and γ=−0.00 [SE=0.06]). Significant interaction effects of workplace environments (physical activity/fitness facilities, work rules, and written policies) and self-regulation were observed on transport-related and leisure-time physical activity.ConclusionsWorkplace environments such as physical activity/fitness facilities, written policies, work rules, and signs for stair use at stairs and elevators; self-regulation for physical activity; and their interactions may be effective to promote three domain-specific physical activities. This study has practical implications for designing multi-component interventions that include both environmental and psychological approaches to increase effect sizes to promote overall physical activity

    Endoscopic evaluation by the Kyoto classification of gastritis combined with serum anti-Helicobacter pylori antibody testing reliably risk-stratifies subjects in a population-based gastric cancer screening program

    Background We previously demonstrated that the Kyoto classification of gastritis was useful for judging the status of Helicobacter pylori infection in a population-based screening program, and that adding H. pylori antibody test improved its accuracy (UMIN000028629). Here, we tested whether our endoscopic diagnosis of H. pylori infection status reliably estimated gastric cancer risk in the program. Methods Data were collected from1345 subjects who underwent endoscopic follow-up 4 years after the end of the registration. We analyzed the association of three diagnostic methods of H. pylori infection with gastric cancer detection: (1) endoscopic diagnosis based on the Kyoto classification of gastritis; (2) serum diagnosis according to the ABC method (H. pylori antibody and pepsinogen I and II); and (3) endoscopic diagnosis together with H. pylori antibody test. Results During the follow-up, 19 cases of gastric cancer were detected. By Kaplan–Meier analysis, the detection rates of cancer were significantly higher in the past or current H. pylori infection groups than in the never-infected group with all 3 methods. By the Cox proportional hazards model, the hazard ratio for cancer detection was highest in evaluation with the combined endoscopic diagnosis and the antibody test (method 3; hazard ratio 22.6, 95% confidence interval 2.99–171) among the three methods (the endoscopic diagnosis (method 1); 11.3, 2.58–49.8, and the ABC method (method 2); 7.52, 2.49–22.7). Conclusions Endoscopic evaluation of H. pylori status with the Kyoto classification of gastritis, especially combined with serum anti-Helicobacter pylori antibody testing, reliably risk-stratified subjects in a population-based gastric cancer screening program

    Systematic measurement of the intrinsic losses in various kinds of bulk fused silica

    We systematically measured and compared the mechanical losses of various kinds of bulk fused silica. Their quality factors ranged widely from 7x10^5 to 4x10^7, the latter being one of the highest reported among bulk fused silica.     Inferring Mood in Ubiquitous Conversational Video

    Conversational social video is becoming a worldwide trend. Video communication allows a more natural interaction, when aiming to share personal news, ideas, and opinions, by transmitting both verbal content and nonverbal behavior. However, the automatic analysis of natural mood is challenging, since it is displayed in parallel via voice, face, and body. This paper presents an automatic approach to infer 11 natural mood categories in conversational social video using single and multimodal nonverbal cues extracted from video blogs (vlogs) from YouTube. The mood labels used in our work were collected via crowdsourcing. Our approach is promising for several of the studied mood categories. Our study demonstrates that although multimodal features perform better than single channel features, not always all the available channels are needed to accurately discriminate mood in videos

The current guidelines recommend the use of a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (5ARI) to treat males with moderate-to-severe LUTS and an enlarged prostate. Combination therapy with an alpha blocker and a 5ARI has proven effective at ameliorating LUTS and reducing the total prostate volume (TPV) and the risk of the disease progression

    High Serum Advanced Glycation End Products Are Associated with Decreased Insulin Secretion in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Brief Report

    Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are important in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). They directly cause insulin secretory defects in animal and cell culture models and may promote insulin resistance in nondiabetic subjects. We have developed a highly sensitive liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for measuring AGEs in human serum. Here, we use this method to investigate the relationship between AGEs and insulin secretion and resistance in patients with T2DM. Methods. Our study involved 15 participants with T2DM not on medication and 20 nondiabetic healthy participants. We measured the AGE carboxyethyllysine (CEL), carboxymethyllysine (CML), and methyl-glyoxal-hydro-imidazolone (MG-H1). Plasma glucose and insulin were measured in these participants during a meal tolerance test, and the glucose disposal rate was measured during a euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp. Results. CML and CEL levels were significantly higher in T2DM than non-DM participants. CML showed a significant negative correlation with insulin secretion, HOMA-%B, and a significant positive correlation with the insulin sensitivity index in T2DM participants. There was no correlation between any of the AGEs measured and glucose disposal rate. Conclusions. These results suggest that AGE might play a role in the development or prediction of insulin secretory defects in type 2 diabetes
