    Deep redshift topological lensing: strategies for the T^3 candidate

    The 3-torus (T^3) FLRW model better fits the nearly zero large-scale auto-correlation of the WMAP CMB sky maps than the infinite flat model. The T^3 model's WMAP parameters imply approximately equal-redshift topological lensing at z \sim 6. We investigate observational strategies for rejecting the T^3 solution or providing candidate topologically lensed galaxy pairs. T^3 holonomies are applied to (i) existing z \sim 6 observations and (ii) simulated observations, creating multiply connected catalogues. Corresponding simply connected catalogues are generated. Each catalogue is analysed using a successive filter method and collecting matched quadruples. Quadruple statistics between the multiply and simply connected catalogues are compared. The expected rejection of the hypothesis, or detection of candidate topologically lensed galaxies, is possible at a significance of 5% for a pair of T^3 axis-centred northern and southern surveys if photometric redshift accuracy is \sigma(\zphot) < 0.01 for a pair of nearly complete 100 deg^2 surveys with a total of > 500 galaxies over 4.3 < z < 6.6, or for a pair of 196 deg^2 surveys with > 400 galaxies and \sigma(\zphot) < 0.02 over 4<z<7. Dropping the maximum time interval in a pair from \Delta t =1 Gyr/h to \Delta t =0.1 Gyr/h yields a requirement of \sigma(\zphot) < 0.005 or \sigma(\zphot) < 0.01, respectively. Millions of z \sim 6 galaxies will be observed over fields of these sizes during the coming decades, implying much stronger constraints.     Identifying future study designs for mental health and social wellbeing associated with diets of a cohort living in eco-regions:findings from the INSUM Expert Workshop

    Diets influence our mental health and social wellbeing (MHSW) in multiple ways. A rising community concept, Eco-Regions, has gained interest. The research project “Indicators for assessment of health effects of consumption of sustainable, organic school meals in Ecoregions” (INSUM) aims to develop future-oriented research approaches to measure the potential health effects of more sustainable and healthy diets. This first part of the project focuses on MHSW with the goal to identify suitable study designs and indicators. The methodology is based on a 2-day workshop with an interdisciplinary group of experts. This paper describes commonly applied research methods on the nexus between diet and MHSW as presented by the experts and summarises key points from the discussions. The results show that the dominating tool to investigate MSHW is questionnaires. Questionnaires vary largely depending on the research design, such as participants or distribution channels. Cohort studies addressing families and including in-depth interventional and/or experimental studies may be suitable for an Eco-Region investigation. Those MHSW studies can be conducted and combined with measurements of somatic health effects. We conclude that indicators should be seen as complementary rather than independent.     ATPase activity in macula densa cells of the rabbit kidney

    Na-K- and Mg-activated ATPase activities were determined in maculae densae and glomeruli dissected from both superficial and juxtamedullary nephrons of normal rabbits, using an ultramicro method including a cycling reaction. Activities were expressed as P i generated per macula densa or per glomerulus and normalized for tissue volume. Results indicate that the mean volume of superficial and juxtamedullary macula densa samples was not statistically different, while glomeruli from deep nephrons had sample volumes that were 29% larger than those from superficial nephrons ( P <0.001). Correcting for volume both superficial and juxtamedullary macula densa samples had an Na-K-ATPase activity of 0.37±0.21 fmol · h −1 · (μm 3 ) −1 . Mg-ATPase activity in both pools was also similar [0.41±0.07 and 0.52±0.1 fmol · h −1 · (μm 3 ) −1 ]. Na-K-ATPase activity in macula densa cells is estimated to be about 1/40th the activity of surrounding cortical thick ascending limb cells. Total glomerular ATPase per unit volume was significantly higher in glomeruli from superficial than from deep nephrons [0.41±0.04 vs. 0.28±0.04 fmol · h −1 · (μm 3 ) −1 P <0.05]. There was no statistically significant activity of Na-K-ATPase in either superficial or deep glomeruli. These results suggest that in contrast to previous reports, the macula densa contains Na-K-ATPase, but at a low level relative to surrounding tubular cells.     Antibiotic resistance determinants in the interplay between food and gut microbiota

    A complex and heterogeneous microflora performs sugar and lactic acid fermentations in food products. Depending on the fermentable food matrix (dairy, meat, vegetable etc.) as well as on the species composition of the microbiota, specific combinations of molecules are produced that confer unique flavor, texture, and taste to each product. Bacterial populations within such “fermented food microbiota” are often of environmental origin, they persist alive in foods ready for consumption, eventually reaching the gastro-intestinal tract where they can interact with the resident gut microbiota of the host. Although this interaction is mostly of transient nature, it can greatly contribute to human health, as several species within the food microbiota also display probiotic properties. Such an interplay between food and gut microbiota underlines the importance of the microbiological quality of fermented foods, as the crowded environment of the gut is also an ideal site for genetic exchanges among bacteria. Selection and spreading of antibiotic resistance genes in foodborne bacteria has gained increasing interest in the past decade, especially in light of the potential transferability of antibiotic resistance determinants to opportunistic pathogens, natural inhabitants of the human gut but capable of acquiring virulence in immunocompromised individuals. This review aims at describing major findings and future prospects in the field, especially after the use of antibiotics as growth promoters was totally banned in Europe, with special emphasis on the application of genomic technologies to improve quality and safety of fermented foods
