Oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder co-occurrence increases the risk of Internet addiction in adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder

Objectives The aims of this cross-sectional study were to assess the prevalence of Internet addiction (IA) in a clinical sample of adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and to detect the moderating effects of co-occurring oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder (ODD/CD) on the association between ADHD and IA. Methods The study group comprised 119 adolescent subjects who were consecutively referred to our outpatient clinic with a diagnosis of ADHD. The Turgay DSM-IV-Based Child and Adolescent Disruptive Behavioral Disorders Screening and Rating Scale (T-DSM-IV-S) was completed by parents, and subjects were asked to complete the Internet Addiction Scale (IAS). Results The IAS results indicated that 63.9% of the participants (n = 76) fell into the IA group. Degree of IA was correlated with hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms but not with inattention symptoms. As compared to the ADHD-only group (without comorbid ODD/CD), ADHD + ODD/CD subjects returned significantly higher scores on the IAS. Conclusions As adolescents with ADHD are at high risk of developing IA, early IA detection and intervention is of great importance for this group. In addition, adolescents with ADHD + ODD/CD may be more vulnerable to IA than those in the ADHD-only group and may need to be more carefully assessed for IA

Purpose: Having a disabled child effects mothers and fathers both in the physical and emotional aspect. This study aims to investigate levels of perception of family environment in mothers of children with CP. Material-Method: In order to determine the levels of perception of family environment in mothers of children with CP, this study in cluded 66 children with CP and their mothers. Family Environment Questionnaire was applied to mothers. Results: Mean age of the children was 4.03±1.09 years. 26 (39.4%) of all children had speech disorder in addition to CP. Significant correlation was found between clinical type, information given to mothers about the diagnosis of their children, speech disorder of the children and between family environment concept unity-solidarity (p<0.05). Conclusion: Detailed knowledge about families may help to determine the services which will be provided to families. This study therefore is important

3rd World Conference on Educational Sciences (WCES) -- FEB 03-07, 2011 -- Bahcesehir Univ, Istanbul, TURKEYWOS: 000466750602037Having a physically handicapped children affect the life of the mothers negatively. This study aimed to investigate the depression levels of the mothers who have physically handicapped children. This study included 51 physically handicapped children and their mothers. Demographic characteristics were determined. Depression levels of the mothers were determined by Beck Depression Inventory, which was developed by Beck et al in 1961 and realibility and validity were studied by Hisli (1988, 1989). Datas were analysed by Independent Sample t test and Pearson correlation test in SPSS 15.0 programme and statistical significance was accepted as p<0,05. Determination of depression levels of the mothers who have physically handicapped children are required in order to provide psychological support to mothers when needed.Ankara Univ, Near E Uni

Asteroseismology of Exoplanet Host Stars

No full text
Exoplanet studies are one of the most interesting and attractive topics in astrophysics. Besides of ground-based observations, Kepler and CoRoT space missions improved our knowledge by providing unprecedented data of exoplanets and host stars. Precise determination of basic properties of planets depends on how we accurately determine fundamental properties of host stars. Asteroseismology is a powerful tool to study stellar structure and evolution and provides us radius, mass and age of the host stars. In this study, we construct stellar interior models of these stars with the MESA evolution code and compare model frequencies with the oscillation frequencies derived from Kepler data. Then, we obtain fundamental parameters of the host stars. Finally, fundamental parameters of exoplanets are reevaluated. </p

One of the important factor to the compliance to disability of children is to determine the needs of the children with disabilities and their families. This study was designed to investigate the perceptions of family needs in mothers of children with physical disabilities. The study included 113 mothers of children with physical disabilities. The perception of family needs in mothers was assessed by Assessment of Family Needs-FNS developed by Bailey ve Simenson (1988). The data was evaluated by the Single Relation Variance Analysis, t Test, Scheffe Test and Pearson Correlation Test, using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 18.0) packet programme. Education levels of the mothers showed difference on knowledge needs (F=5.999, p=0.001), support needs (F=3.759, p=0.013) and general needs (F=3.300, p=0.023) dimensions. Meeting the basic needs of the families may increase the quality of life of the mothers who are the active member of rehabilitation process and may also effect the rehabilitation process in a positive way. Mothers and fathers are accepted as having major roles in the development and education period of the physically handicapped children. Most intensive periods of children to interest and care of their mothers are; preschool and primary school periods therefore these periods have great importance in physically handicapped children. This study aimed to compare the family environment perception levels of the mothers who have physically handicapped children in preschool (3-6 years) and primary school (7-10 years) period. This study included 84 physically handicapped children and their mothers. Perception of family environment of mothers were determined by Family Environment Questionnaire-FEQ. The results indicated that preschool or primary school period did not effect the family environment perception of the mothers of the physically handicapped children (p>0.05).
