Light scattering and phase behavior of Lysozyme-PEG mixtures
Measurements of liquid-liquid phase transition temperatures (cloud points) of
mixtures of a protein (lysozyme) and a polymer, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)
show that the addition of low molecular weight PEG stabilizes the mixture
whereas high molecular weight PEG was destabilizing. We demonstrate that this
behavior is inconsistent with an entropic depletion interaction between
lysozyme and PEG and suggest that an energetic attraction between lysozyme and
PEG is responsible. In order to independently characterize the lysozyme/PEG
interactions, light scattering experiments on the same mixtures were performed
to measure second and third virial coefficients. These measurements indicate
that PEG induces repulsion between lysozyme molecules, contrary to the
depletion prediction. Furthermore, it is shown that third virial terms must be
included in the mixture's free energy in order to qualitatively capture our
cloud point and light scattering data. The light scattering results were
consistent with the cloud point measurements and indicate that attractions do

SMEI observations of previously unseen pulsation frequencies in γ Doradus
Aims. As g-mode pulsators, gamma-Doradus-class stars may naïvely be expected to show a large number of modes. Taking advantage of the long photometric time-series generated by the solar mass ejection imager (SMEI) instrument, we have studied the star gamma Doradus to determine whether any other modes than the three already known are present at observable amplitude.
Methods. High-precision photometric data from SMEI taken between April 2003 and March 2006 were subjected to periodogram analysis with the PERIOD04 package.
Results. We confidently determine three additional frequencies at 1.39, 1.87, and 2.743 d−1. These are above and beyond the known frequencies of 1.320, 1.364, and 1.47 d−1.
Conclusions. Two of the new frequencies, at 1.39 and 1.87 d−1, are speculated to be additional modes of oscillation, with the third frequency at 2.743−1 a possible combination frequency
String amplitudes in arbitrary dimensions
We calculate gravitational dressed tachyon correlators in non critcal
dimensions. The 2D gravity part of our theory is constrained to constant
curvature. Then scaling dimensions of gravitational dressed vertex operators
are equal to their bare conformal dimensions. Considering the model as d+2
dimensional critical string we calculate poles of generalized Shapiro-Virasoro

Mass and Angular Momentum Transfer in the Massive Algol Binary RY Persei
We present an investigation of H-alpha emission line variations observed in
the massive Algol binary, RY Per. We give new radial velocity data for the
secondary based upon our optical spectra and for the primary based upon high
dispersion UV spectra. We present revised orbital elements and an estimate of
the primary's projected rotational velocity (which indicates that the primary
is rotating 7 times faster than synchronous). We use a Doppler tomography
algorithm to reconstruct the individual primary and secondary spectra in the
region of H-alpha, and we subtract the latter from each of our observations to
obtain profiles of the primary and its disk alone. Our H-alpha observations of
RY Per show that the mass gaining primary is surrounded by a persistent but
time variable accretion disk. The profile that is observed outside-of-eclipse
has weak, double-peaked emission flanking a deep central absorption, and we
find that these properties can be reproduced by a disk model that includes the
absorption of photospheric light by the band of the disk seen in projection
against the face of the star. We developed a new method to reconstruct the disk
surface density distribution from the ensemble of H-alpha profiles observed
around the orbit, and this method accounts for the effects of disk occultation
by the stellar components, the obscuration of the primary by the disk, and flux
contributions from optically thick disk elements. The resulting surface density
distribution is elongated along the axis joining the stars, in the same way as
seen in hydrodynamical simulations of gas flows that strike the mass gainer
near trailing edge of the star. This type of gas stream configuration is
optimal for the transfer of angular momentum, and we show that rapid rotation

Optimal phase estimation in quantum networks
We address the problem of estimating the phase phi given N copies of the
phase rotation u(phi) within an array of quantum operations in finite
dimensions. We first consider the special case where the array consists of an
arbitrary input state followed by any arrangement of the N phase rotations, and
ending with a POVM. We optimise the POVM for a given input state and fixed
arrangement. Then we also optimise the input state for some specific cost
functions. In all cases, the optimal POVM is equivalent to a quantum Fourier

Including all voices in international data-sharing governance
Background
Governments, funding bodies, institutions, and publishers have developed a number of strategies to encourage researchers to facilitate access to datasets. The rationale behind this approach is that this will bring a number of benefits and enable advances in healthcare and medicine by allowing the maximum returns from the investment in research, as well as reducing waste and promoting transparency. As this approach gains momentum, these data-sharing practices have implications for many kinds of research as they become standard practice across the world.

The governance frameworks that have been developed to support biomedical research are not well equipped to deal with the complexities of international data sharing. This system is nationally based and is dependent upon expert committees for oversight and compliance, which has often led to piece-meal decisionmaking. This system tends to perpetuate inequalities by obscuring the contributions and the important role of different data providers along the data stream, whether they be low- or middle-income country researchers, patients, research participants, groups, or communities. As research and data-sharing activities are largely publicly funded, there is a strong moral argument for including the people who provide the data in decision-making and to develop governance systems for their continued participation.
Conclusions
We recommend that governance of science becomes more transparent, representative, and responsive to the voices of many constituencies by conducting public consultations about data-sharing addressing issues of access and use; including all data providers in decision-making about the use and sharing of data along the whole of the data stream; and using digital technologies to encourage accessibility, transparency, and accountability. We anticipate that this approach could enhance the legitimacy of the research process, generate insights that may otherwise be overlooked or ignored, and help to bring valuable perspectives into the decision-making around international data sharing.</p
Kinetic-Ballooning-Limited Pedestals in Spherical Tokamak Plasmas
A theoretical model is presented that for the first time matches experimental
measurements of the pedestal width-height Diallo scaling in the
low-aspect-ratio high- tokamak NSTX. Combining linear gyrokinetics with
self-consistent pedestal equilibrium variation, kinetic-ballooning, rather than
ideal-ballooning plasma instability, is shown to limit achievable confinement
in spherical tokamak pedestals. Simulations are used to find the novel
Gyrokinetic Critical Pedestal constraint, which determines the steepest
pressure profile a pedestal can sustain subject to gyrokinetic instability.
Gyrokinetic width-height scaling expressions for NSTX pedestals with varying
density and temperature profiles are obtained. These scalings for spherical

Observations of fluorescent aerosol-cloud interactions in the free troposphere at the High-Altitude Research Station Jungfraujoch

Published by Copernicus Publications.The fluorescent nature of aerosol at a high-altitude Alpine site was studied using a wide-band integrated bioaerosol (WIBS-4) single particle multi-channel ultraviolet - light-induced fluorescence (UV-LIF) spectrometer. This was supported by comprehensive cloud microphysics and meteorological measurements with the aims of cataloguing concentrations of bio-fluorescent aerosols at this high-altitude site and also investigating possible influences of UV-fluorescent particle types on cloud-aerosol processes. Analysis of background free tropospheric air masses, using a total aerosol inlet, showed there to be a minor increase in the fluorescent aerosol fraction during in-cloud cases compared to out-of-cloud cases. The size dependence of the fluorescent aerosol fraction showed the larger aerosol to be more likely to be fluorescent with 80% of 10 μm particles being fluorescent. Whilst the fluorescent particles were in the minority (NFl/NAll = 0.27 ± 0.19), a new hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis approach, Crawford et al. (2015) revealed the majority of the fluorescent aerosols were likely to be representative of fluorescent mineral dust. A minor episodic contribution from a cluster likely to be representative of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAP) was also observed with a wintertime baseline concentration of 0.1 ± 0.4 L-1. Given the low concentration of this cluster and the typically low ice-active fraction of studied PBAP (e.g. pseudomonas syringae), we suggest that the contribution to the observed ice crystal concentration at this location is not significant during the wintertime. © Author(s) 2016.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Perception and valuations of community-based education and service by alumni at Makerere University College of Health Sciences
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Training of health professionals can be deliberately structured to enhance rural recruitment by exposing the trainees to the realities of rural life and practice through Community-Based Education and Service (COBE) programs. Few studies have surveyed the alumni of these programs to establish their post-university views and whether the positive impact of COBE programs endures into the post-university life. This study surveyed the alumni of COBE at Makerere to obtain their perceptions of the management and administration of COBE and whether COBE had helped develop their confidence as health workers, competence in primary health care and willingness and ability to work in rural communities.</p> <p>Objectives</p> <p>• To assess the efficiency of the management and administration of COBES.</p> <p>• To obtain the views of the impact of COBES on its alumni.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A mixed qualitative and quantitative study was conducted using focus group discussions (FGD) and a telephone administered questionnaire. From a total of 300 COBES alumni 150 were contacted. Twenty four Alumni (13 females and 11 males) were purposefully selected by discipline, gender and place of work, and invited for the focus group discussion. The discussions were transcribed and analyzed using a manifest content analysis table. The thematic issues from the FGDs were used to develop a structured questionnaire which was administered by telephone by the authors. The data were entered into Microsoft excel template and exported to Stata for analysis. The findings of the telephone survey were used to cross-match the views expressed during the focus group discussions.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The alumni almost unanimously agree that the initial three years of COBES were very successful in terms of administration and coordination. COBES was credited for contributing to development of confidence as health workers, team work, communication skills, competence in primary health care and willingness to work in rural areas. The COBES alumni also identified various challenges associated with administration and coordination of COBES at Makerere.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study has established that the positive impact of COBES endures with the alumni of the program. Health planners should take advantage of the impact of COBES and provide it with more support.</p
Serotonin transporter binding of [123I]ADAM in bulimic women, their healthy twin sisters, and healthy women: a SPET study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Bulimia Nervosa (BN) is believed to be caused by an interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Previous studies support the existence of a bulimia-related endophenotype as well as disturbances in serotonin (5-HT) transmission. We studied serotonin transporter (SERT) binding in BN, and to investigate the possibility of a SERT-related endophenotype for BN, did this in a sample of female twins. We hypothesized clearly reduced SERT binding in BN women as opposed to healthy women, and intermediate SERT binding in unaffected co-twins.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We studied 13 female twins with BN (9 with purging and 4 with non-purging BN) and 25 healthy women, including 6 healthy twin sisters of BN patients and 19 women from 10 healthy twin pairs. [<sup>123</sup>I]ADAM, a selective SERT radioligand for single photon emission tomography (SPET) imaging, was used to assess SERT availability in the midbrain and the thalamus.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>No differences in SERT binding were evident when comparing the BN women, their unaffected co-twins and the healthy controls (p = 0.14). The healthy sisters of the BN patients and the healthy control women had similar SERT binding in both brain regions. In a <it>post hoc </it>subgroup analysis, the purging bulimics had higher SERT binding than the healthy women in the midbrain (p = 0.03), but not in the thalamus.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our finding of increased SERT binding in the midbrain in the purging BN women raises the possibility that this subgroup of bulimics might differ in serotonergic function from the non-purging ones. The similarity of the unaffected co-twins and the healthy controls doesn't support our initial assumption of a SERT-related endophenotype for BN. Due to the small sample size, our results need to be interpreted with caution and verified in a larger sample.</p
