    Investigation of the components of the NAL high Reynolds number two-dimensional wind tunnel. Part 4: Design, construction and performance of the exhaust silencer

    Presented is a description of the design construction and performance of the exhaust silencer for the NAL high Reynolds number two-dimensional transonic blow down wind tunnel, which was completed in October 1979. The silencer is a two-storied construction made of reinforced concrete, 40 m. long, 10 m. wide and 19 m. high and entirely enclosed by thick concrete walls. The upstream part of the first story, particularly, is covered with double walls, the thickness of the two walls being 0.3 m. (inner wall) and 0.2 m. (outer wall), respectively. A noise reduction system using three kinds of parallel baffles and two kinds of lined bends is adopted for the wind tunnel exhaust noise

    First Nonperturbative Test of a Relativistic Heavy Quark Action in Quenched Lattice QCD

    We perform a numerical test of a relativistic heavy quark(RHQ) action, recently proposed by Tsukuba group, in quenched lattice QCD at a0.1a\simeq 0.1 fm. With the use of the improvement parameters previously determined at one-loop level for the RHQ action, we investigate a restoration of rotational symmetry for heavy-heavy and heavy-light meson systems around the charm quark mass. We focused on two quantities, the meson dispersion relation and the pseudo-scalar meson decay constants. It is shown that the RHQ action significantly reduces the discretization errors due to the charm quark mass. We also calculate the S-state hyperfine splittings for the charmonium and charmed-strange mesons and the DsD_s meson decay constant. The remaining discretization errors in the physical quantities are discussed.Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures.     The role of temperature and frequency on fretting wear of a like-on-like stainless steel contact

    The influences of environmental temperature and fretting frequency on the mechanisms and rates of wear in a like-on-like 304 stainless steel contact were examined, and mainly attributed to changes in the mechanical response of the bulk material and to changes in the behaviour of the oxide debris formed in the fretting process. At low temperatures, wear proceeds by continual oxide formation and egress from the contact, whilst at high temperatures, the rate of wear is much reduced, associated with the development of oxide formed into a protective bed within the contact. The temperature at which the change between these two behaviours took place was dependent upon the fretting frequency, with evidence that, at this transition temperature, changes in behaviour can occur as the fretting test proceeds under a fixed set of conditions. An interaction diagram has been developed which provides a coherent framework by which the complex effects of these two parameters can be rationalised in terms of widely accepted physical principles

    Hepatitis B and C virus prevalence in a rural area of South Korea: the role of acupuncture

    A cross-sectional study evaluated the prevalence of and the risk factors for hepatitis C and B viruses among 700 adults above the age of 40 years in a rural area of South Korea. Seropositivity for hepatitis C virus antibody (11.0%, 95% confidence interval: 8.7–13.6) was higher than that for hepatitis B surface antigen (4.4%, 95% confidence interval: 3.0–6.2). Anti-hepatitis C virus seropositivity was associated with a history of repeated acupuncture (odds ratio=2.1, 95% confidence interval: 1.1–4.0), and blood transfusion (odds ratio=5.5, 95% confidence interval: 1.6–19.3) before 1992 when hepatitis C virus screening in blood donors became mandatory. Hepatitis C virus 2a was the most prevalent genotype, followed by 1b. Hepatitis C virus risk attributable to acupuncture was 38% (9% for men and 55% for women). Safer acupuncture practice has become a priority for hepatitis C virus prevention in South Korea

    Circadian Clocks as Modulators of Metabolic Comorbidity in Psychiatric Disorders

    Psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder are often accompanied by metabolic dysfunction symptoms, including obesity and diabetes. Since the circadian system controls important brain systems that regulate affective, cognitive, and metabolic functions, and neuropsychiatric and metabolic diseases are often correlated with disturbances of circadian rhythms, we hypothesize that dysregulation of circadian clocks plays a central role in metabolic comorbidity in psychiatric disorders. In this review paper, we highlight the role of circadian clocks in glucocorticoid, dopamine, and orexin/melanin-concentrating hormone systems and describe how a dysfunction of these clocks may contribute to the simultaneous development of psychiatric and metabolic symptoms

    Imperiled freshwater mussels in drainage channels associated with rare agricultural landscape and diverse fish communities

    Identification of landscape structures that predict the distribution of aquatic organisms has the potential to provide a practical management tool for species conservation in agricultural drainage channels. We tested the hypothesis that sites with imperiled freshwater mussels have distinct rural landscape structures and are characterized by the presence of diverse fish communities. In central Japan, the proportion of developed land use in surrounding areas was compared among sites with mussel populations (mussel sites) and randomly chosen sites (random sites) across multiple spatial scales (with a radius ranging from 100 to 3,000 m). Mussel sites were characterized by a much lower proportion of developed land (mean 5-18 %) compared with random sites (mean 32-35 %) at a scale of a parts per thousand currency sign300 m. The areas that met the landscape criteria for mussel sites across multiple scales constituted only 0.23 % of the area that was presumed to have suitable slope and elevation as a mussel habitat. Landscape metrics derived from mussel sites to locate unknown populations had a low predictability (16.7 %). Sites with mussels were located close to each other and had fish communities with higher taxonomic diversity than in sites without mussels. In addition, mussel taxonomic richness was a good predictor of fish community diversity. The quantitative measures of landscape structure may serve as a useful tool when prioritizing or identifying areas for conservation of mussels and fish if spatially autocorrelated distribution of habitat and other critical environmental factors such as habitat connectivity are also considered
