知覚のコマ落ちから、意識の時間を可視化 --意識の進化的側面にもアプローチ--. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2023-11-01.Even when we attend to successive visual events, we often cannot notice an event occurring during a certain temporal window. Such an inaccessible time for visual awareness is known as "attentional blink" (AB). Whether AB is a phenomenon unique to humans or exists also in other animals is unclear. Using a dual-task paradigm shared between macaques and humans, we here demonstrate a nonhuman primate model of AB. Although macaques also showed behavioral signatures of AB, their AB effect lasted longer than that of humans. To map the relation between macaque and human ABs, we introduced a time warping analysis. The analysis revealed a formal structure behind the interspecies difference of AB; the temporal window of macaque AB was scaled from that of human AB. The present study opens the door to combining the approaches of neuroscience, psychophysics, and theoretical models to further identify a scale-invariant biological substrate of visual awareness

Tuning Neutron Resonance Spin-Echo Spectrometers with Pulsed Beams

The neutron spin-echo spectroscopy technique involving pulsed beams can be used to effectively access a wide range of space-time correlations of condensed matter. In this study, the features of this technique, in particular, the modulation of the intensity with zero effort (MIEZE) by using pulsed beams, which is based on the quantum-state manipulation of the neutron spin and energy, are comprehensively examined. A formulation of the MIEZE combined with the time of flight method (TOF MIEZE) is established by considering the characteristics of the pulsed neutron beams. Moreover, a parameter, namely, the detuning parameter, is introduced as a measure of the magnitude of detuning from the optimized instrumental state, known as the spin-echo condition. The phase and frequency shifts of the neutron intensity signals resulting from the TOF MIEZE under various configurations are investigated systematically. It is found that the detuning parameter equals the derivative of phase with respect to the TOF, whose zero-point corresponds to the spin-echo condition. The theoretical predictions on phase and frequency shifts by the established formulation are well validated by the experiments using an intense pulsed neutron source. The detuning parameter helps clarify the principle of the TOF MIEZE technique and can provide practical guidance regarding the implementation and optimization of spectrometers

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Fatty acid-induced insulin resistance and impaired glucose uptake activity in muscle cells are fundamental events in the development of type 2 diabetes and hyperglycemia. There is an increasing demand for compounds including drugs and functional foods that can prevent myocellular insulin resistance.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In this study, we established a high-throughput assay to screen for compounds that can improve myocellular insulin resistance, which was based on a previously reported non-radioisotope 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) uptake assay. Insulin-resistant muscle cells were prepared by treating rat L6 skeletal muscle cells with 750 μM palmitic acid for 14 h. Using the established assay, the impacts of several fatty acids on myocellular insulin resistance were determined.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In normal L6 cells, treatment with saturated palmitic or stearic acid alone decreased 2DG uptake, whereas unsaturated fatty acids did not. Moreover, co-treatment with oleic acid canceled the palmitic acid-induced decrease in 2DG uptake activity. Using the developed assay with palmitic acid-induced insulin-resistant L6 cells, we determined the effects of other unsaturated fatty acids. We found that arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids improved palmitic acid-decreased 2DG uptake at lower concentrations than the other unsaturated fatty acids, including oleic acid, as 10 μM arachidonic acid showed similar effects to 750 μM oleic acid.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We have found that polyunsaturated fatty acids, in particular arachidonic and eicosapentaenoic acids prevent palmitic acid-induced myocellular insulin resistance.</p

Long-term Observation of Osteomalacia Caused by Adefovir-Induced Fanconi’s Syndrome

A 64-year-old man suffering polyarthralgia and bone pain was referred to our hospital. Renal dysfunction, hypophosphatemia and increased levels of bone alkaline phosphatase were found. The patientʼs serum creatinine level had gradually increased after the initiation of adefovir dipivoxil administration for hepatitis B. In agreement with multifocal uptakes of bone scintigraphy, iliac bone biopsy revealed an abnormal increase in osteoid tissues. Reducing the dose of adefovir and initiating the administration of eldecalcitol were effective for reducing proteinuria and glucosuria, and for ameliorating bone pain with an increase in serum phosphate level. This case first showed a clinical course of hypophosphatemic osteomalacia caused by secondary Fanconiʼs syndrome for 8 years after adefovir administration. Early diagnosis is important for the reversibility of bone damage and for a better renal prognosis

Proposal of Reasonable Fill Construction Management Index in Fill Loading with Vacuum Consolidation Method Based on FEM Analyses

Vacuum consolidation method (VCM) is one of the recent methods for the improvement of soft ground. This method can forcibly drain pore water, and increase ground strength by loading of the vacuum pressure. A fill loading with vacuum consolidation method (FLVCM) is considered to be able to control lateral flow and upheaval of surrounding area during the rapid fill construction. However, the behavior of this combination on the ground deformation is not fully clarified on FLVCM, fill design and site management is depending on the experienced technique. In this study, numerical simulation has been carried out by finite element method (FEM) for the quantitative evaluation of the deformation suppression effect of FLVCM on the soft grounds of ariake clay, Japan. The utility of FLVCM was confirmed from comparison with the observed and the analytical ground deformation. In addition, the numerical simulation have been carried out under the various conditions of vacuum preand post-loading pressures and fill speeds, and it is suggested that the reasonable construction management index can be easily obtained by the site measurement of deformation

A statistical study of convective and dynamic instabilities in the polar upper mesosphere above Tromsø

We have studied the convective (or static) and dynamic instabilities between 80 and 100 km above Tromsø (69.6° N, 19.2° E) using temperature and wind data of 6 min and 1 km resolutions primarily almost over a solar cycle obtained with the sodium lidar at Tromsø. First, we have calculated Brunt–Väisälä frequency (N) for 339 nights obtained from October 2010 to December 2019, and the Richardson number (Ri) for 210 nights obtained between October 2012 to December 2019. Second, using those values (N and Ri), we have calculated probabilities of the convective instability (N2<0) and the dynamic instability (0≤Ri<0.25) that can be used for proxies for evaluating the atmospheric stability. The probability of the convective instability varies from about 1% to 24% with a mean value of 9%, and that of the dynamic instability varies from 4 to 20% with a mean value of 10%. Third, we have compared these probabilities with the F10.7 index and local K-index. The probability of the convective instability shows a dependence (its correlation coefcient of 0.45) of the geomagnetic activity (local K-index) between 94 and 100 km, suggesting an auroral infuence on the atmospheric stability. The probability of the dynamic instability shows a solar cycle dependence (its correlation coefcient being 0.54). The probability of the dynamic instability shows the dependence of the 12 h wave amplitude (meridional and zonal wind components) (C.C.=0.52). The averaged potential energy of gravity waves shows decrease with height between 81 and 89 km, suggesting that dissipation of gravity waves plays an important role (at least partly) in causing the convective instability below 89 km. The probability of the convective instability at Tromsø appears to be higher than that at middle/low latitudes, while the probability of the dynamic instability is similar to that at middle/low latitudes

The Type Ic Hypernova SN 2002ap

    Get PDF
Photometric and spectroscopic data of the energetic Type Ic supernova (SN) 2002ap are presented, and the properties of the SN are investigated through models of its spectral evolution and its light curve. The SN is spectroscopically similar to the "hypernova" SN 1997ef. However, its kinetic energy [(410)×1051\sim (4-10) \times 10^{51} erg] and the mass ejected (2.5-5 MM_{\odot}) are smaller, resulting in a faster-evolving light curve. The SN synthesized 0.07M\sim 0.07 M_{\odot} of 56^{56}Ni, and its peak luminosity was similar to that of normal SNe. Brightness alone should not be used to define a hypernova, whose defining character, namely very broad spectral features, is the result of a high kinetic energy. The likely main-sequence mass of the progenitor star was 20-25 MM_{\odot}, which is also lower than that of both hypernovae SNe 1997ef and 1998bw. SN 2002ap appears to lie at the low-energy and low-mass end of the hypernova sequence as it is known so far. Observations of the nebular spectrum, which is expected to dominate by summer 2002, are necessary to confirm these values.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL, 30 April 2002 (minor changes to match the accepted version, with figures being colored
