Control of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in large-diameter, lebanon-style bologna
Lebanon bologna raw batter was mixed with a five-strain mixture of Escherichia coli O157:H7 to achieve average inoculum levels of 7.79, 7.77, and 7.92 log CFU/g as deter mined on MSA, 202, and PRSA media, respectively. Treatment 1 consisted of a fermentation cycle of 8 hrs at an internal temperature (I.T.) of 80EF then 24 hrs at 100EF I.T., followed by 24 hrs at 110EF I.T. Treatments 2, 3, and 4 included additional heating at 115EF I.T. for 1, 2, and 5 hrs, respectively. All heat treatments resulted in product that was negative (\u3c1.9 log CFU/g detection limit) on all culture media and negative after enrichment on mEC selective medium. This study validates that a five-log reduction of E. coli O157:H7 can be achieved using the described protocol, thus meeting USDA/FSIS requirements
Research reports: 1987 NASA/ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program
For the 23rd consecutive year, a NASA/ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program was conducted at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). The program was conducted by the University of Alabama in Huntsville and MSFC during the period 1 June to 7 August 1987. Operated under the auspices of the American Society for Engineering Education, the MSFC program, as well as those at other NASA Centers, was sponsored by the Office of University Affairs, NASA Headquarters, Washington, D.C. The basic objectives of the program are: (1) to further the professional knowledge of qualified engineering and science faculty members; (2) to stimulate an exchange of ideas between participants and NASA; (3) to enrich and refresh the research and teaching activities of the participant's institutions; and (4) to contribute to the research objectives of the NASA Centers. This document is a compilation of Fellow's reports on their research during the Summer of 1987
A bone grease processing station at the Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village: archaeological evidence for the exploitation of bone fats

The definitive version is available at http://www.maneyonline.com/doi/abs/10.1179/1749631414Y.0000000035.Recent excavations at the Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village, an Initial Middle Missouri site in Mitchell, South Dakota have revealed a large, clay-lined feature filled with fractured and fragmented bison bones. Fracture and fragmentation analysis, along with taphonomic evidence, suggests that the bones preserved within the feature represent evidence of prehistoric bone marrow and bone grease exploitation. Further, the character of the feature suggests that it served as a bone grease processing station. Bone fat exploitation is an activity that is frequently cited as a causal explanation for the nature of many fractured and fragmented bone assemblages in prehistory, and zooarchaeological assemblages have frequently been studied as evidence of bone fat exploitation. The Mitchell example provides some of the first direct, in-situ archaeological evidence of a bone grease processing feature, and this interpretation is sustained by substantial analytical evidence suggesting bone fat exploitation. This new evidence provides a clearer concept of the nature of bone fat exploitation in prehistory as well as an indication of the scale and degree to which bone grease exploitation occurred at the Mitchell site. Finally, this research demonstrates the importance of careful zooarchaeological and taphonomic analysis for the interpretation of both artifactual remains as well as archaeological features

Dusty Cometary Globules in W5
We report the discovery of four dusty cometary tails around low mass stars in
two young clusters belonging to the W5 star forming region. Fits to the
observed emission profiles from 24 micron observations with the Spitzer Space
Telescope give tail lifetimes < 30 Myr, but more likely < 5 Myr. This result
suggests that the cometary phase is a short lived phenomenon, occurring after
photoevaporation by a nearby O star has removed gas from the outer disk of a
young low mass star (see also Balog et al. 2006; Balog et al. 2008).Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication to ApJ Letter

Ambient Radon-222 Monitoring in Amargosa Valley, Nevada
As part of a program to characterize and baseline selected environmental parameters in the region around the proposed repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, ambient radon-222 monitoring was conducted in the rural community of Amargosa Valley, the community closest to the proposed repository site. Passive integrating radon monitors and a continuous radon monitoring instrument were deployed adjacent to the Community Environmental Monitoring Program (CEMP) (http://www.cemp.dri.edu/index.html) station located in the Amargosa Valley Community Center near the library. The CEMP station provided real-time ambient gamma exposure and meteorological data used to correct the integrated radon measurements as well as verify meteorological data collected by the continuous radon monitoring instrument. Additionally, different types of environmental enclosures that housed the monitors and instrument were used to determine if particular designs influenced the ambient radon measurements
Interval Slopes as Numerical Abstract Domain for Floating-Point Variables
The design of embedded control systems is mainly done with model-based tools
such as Matlab/Simulink. Numerical simulation is the central technique of
development and verification of such tools. Floating-point arithmetic, that is
well-known to only provide approximated results, is omnipresent in this
activity. In order to validate the behaviors of numerical simulations using
abstract interpretation-based static analysis, we present, theoretically and
with experiments, a new partially relational abstract domain dedicated to
floating-point variables. It comes from interval expansion of non-linear
functions using slopes and it is able to mimic all the behaviors of the
floating-point arithmetic. Hence it is adapted to prove the absence of run-time
errors or to analyze the numerical precision of embedded control systems
Exponential martingales and changes of measure for counting processes
We give sufficient criteria for the Dol\'eans-Dade exponential of a
stochastic integral with respect to a counting process local martingale to be a
true martingale. The criteria are adapted particularly to the case of counting
processes and are sufficiently weak to be useful and verifiable, as we
illustrate by several examples. In particular, the criteria allow for the
construction of for example nonexplosive Hawkes processes as well as counting
processes with stochastic intensities depending on diffusion processes
Structure and Colors of Diffuse Emission in the Spitzer Galactic First Look Survey
We investigate the density structure of the interstellar medium using new
high-resolution maps of the 8 micron, 24 micron, and 70 micron surface
brightness towards a molecular cloud in the Gum Nebula, made as part of the
Spitzer Space Telescope Galactic First Look Survey. The maps are correlated
with 100 micron images measured with IRAS. At 24 and 70 micron, the spatial
power spectrum of surface brightness follows a power law with spectral index
-3.5. At 24 micron, the power law behavior is remarkably consistent from the
0.2 degree size of our maps down to the 5 arcsecond spatial resolution. Thus,
the structure of the 24 micron emission is self-similar even at milliparsec
scales. The combined power spectrum produced from Spitzer 24 micron and IRAS 25
micron images is consistent with a change in the power law exponent from -2.6
to -3.5. The decrease may be due to the transition from a two-dimensional to
three-dimensional structure. Under this hypothesis, we estimate the thickness
