Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the acceptability and knowledge of undergraduate dental students and dentists on selective caries tissue removal (SCTR). Materials and Methods: Third- and fourth-year Dentistry undergraduates (Group 1) and graduates working in a Hospital Dentistry Center (Group 2) were included in the study. Participants anonymously and confidentially answered a validated questionnaire containing eleven questions on the diagnosis and management of deep caries lesions. Pearson’s Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression compared the answers (p<0.05). Results: Total sample comprised 146 participants. Of these, 81.5% were female; 52.05% were graduates and the most prevalent age group was 18-29 years old (85.62%).  Sixty-nine participants chose stepwise caries removal (p=0.027). The logistic regression analysis showed statistically significant differences. The participants who considered pulp wall moist have approximately eight times more likelihood to choose an invasive treatment (p=0.028). Those who chose endodontic treatment as an option for two-year survival have three times more likelihood to choose an invasive treatment (p=0.032). Those who affirmed that the carious dentin close to the pulp should not be removed had almost three times more likelihood to choose minimally invasive treatments (p=0.031). Discussion: Studies with questionnaires can be useful tools to detect whether the students and dentists are following the most current evidences to treat deep carious lesions. Conclusion: The participants had certain level of knowledge on SCTR, but the technique acceptability lacked consensus.

Abstract Oral health problems can influence people's Quality of Life (QoL) because of pain, discomfort, limitations, and other esthetics problems, affecting their social life, feeding, daily activities, and the individual's well-being. Objective: To compare oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children with and without oral clefts and their families. Materials and Methods: 121 children aged from 2 to 6 years, from both sexes, enrolled in the treatment routine of the Pediatric Dentistry Clinics of a Dental School and a Hospital for Cleft Treatment were divided into two groups: Group 1 - children with cleft lip and palate; Group 2 - children without cleft lip and palate. The OHRQoL was assessed using the validated Portuguese version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (B-ECOHIS). The questionnaire was answered individually, only once, at a private place. Mann-Whitney U test was used to verify differences between groups. Spearman's Rho test was used to associate sex and age with quality of life. The level of significance was set at 5% (

Background: Potential influences of parathyroidectomy (PTx) on the quality of life (QoL) in multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1-related primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT/MEN1) are unknown. Method: Short Form 36 Health Survey Questionnaire was prospectively applied to 30 HPT/MEN1 patients submitted to PTx (20, subtotal; 10, total with autograft) before, 6 and 12 months after surgery. Parameters that were analyzed included QoL, age, HPT-related symptoms, general pain, comorbidities, biochemical/hormonal response, PTx type and parathyroid volume. Results: Asymptomatic patients were younger (30 vs 38 years; P = 0.04) and presented higher QoL scores than symptomatic ones: Physical Component Summary score (PCS) 92.5 vs 61.2, P = 0.0051; Mental Component Summary score (MCS) 82.0 vs 56.0, P = 0.04. In both groups, QoL remained stable 1 year after PTx, independently of the number of comorbidities. Preoperative general pain was negatively correlated with PCS (r = −0.60, P = 0.0004) and MCS (r = −0.57, P = 0.0009). Also, moderate/intense pain was progressively (6/12 months) more frequent in cases developing hypoparathyroidism. The PTx type and hypoparathyroidism did not affect the QoL at 12 months although remnant parathyroid tissue volume did have a positive correlation (P = 0.0490; r = 0.3625) to PCS 12 months after surgery. Patients with one to two comorbidities had as pre-PTx PCS (P = 0.0015) as 12 months and post-PTx PCS (P = 0.0031) and MCS (P = 0.0365) better than patients with three to four comorbidities. Conclusion: A variable QoL profile was underscored in HPT/MEN1 reflecting multiple factors associated with this complex disorder as comorbidities, advanced age at PTx and presence of preoperative symptoms or of general pain perception. Our data encourage the early indication of PTx in HPT/MEN1 by providing known metabolic benefits to target organs and avoiding potential negative impact on QoL

Development and evaluation of an indirect ELISA using a multiepitope antigen for the diagnosis of intestinal schistosomiasis

    Get PDF
The laboratory diagnosis of intestinal schistosomiasis, carried out by detecting parasite eggs in feces, has low sensitivity when applied to individuals with low parasitic load. Serological tests can be more sensitive for the diagnosis of the disease. Therefore, the objective of this work was to develop and evaluate an ELISA-based immunoenzymatic assay, using a Schistosoma mansoni multiepitope antigen (ELISA IgG anti-SmME). For this, the amino acid sequences of S. mansoni cathepsin B and asparaginyl endopeptidase were submitted to the prediction of B cell epitopes and, together with peptide sequences obtained from earlier works, were used in the construction of a minigene. The multiepitope protein was expressed in Escherichia coli and the performance of the ELISA IgG anti-SmME for schistosomiasis was evaluated using serum samples from 107 individuals either egg positive or negative. In addition, 11 samples from individuals with other helminth infections were included. The ELISA IgG anti-SmME showed a sensitivity of 81.1% and a specificity of 46.1%. Further analysis revealed a 77.2% sensitivity in diagnosis of individuals with egg counts of ≤12 epg (eggs per gram feces) and 87.5% for individuals with 13–99 epg. It is worth mentioning that, to our knowledge, this was the first study using a multiepitope recombinant antigen in an ELISA for diagnosis of intestinal schistosomiasis, which demonstrated promising results in the diagnosis of individuals with low parasitic loads

Introduction: The treatment of cleft lip and palate patient must be efficient with minimal damage to facial growth and satisfactory speech result, achieving the psychosocial rehabilitation of the patient. However, the cleft causes distinct levels of change on maxillary growth pattern either by the effect of the defect itself or the rehabilitative process. Generally, study casts, photographs and tridimensional images have been used to evaluate the growth. 3D scanner devices for digitizing study models allow the obtainment of the measurement of the deepness and inclination of palatal shelves and facilitate the study logistic with the reliability of the results. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the size of palatal shelves at two distinct stages: prior to cheiloplasty (stage 1) and prior to palatoplasty (stage 2) in complete unilateral cleft lip and palate patients. Methods: Dental casts from 267 patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate. The palatal shelves were measured at two stages through the scanned images of the casts, by using Adobe Photoshop CS2 software. The measurements of palatal shelves were compared between stage 1 and stage 2. Results: There were an increase of size of palatal shelves in 159 patients (59.5%), a decrease of size of palatal shelves in 102 patients (38.2%), and in 6 patients (2.2%) there were no changes of the sizes. In average, the size of increase of palatal shelves was 0.21 cm; the decrease was 0.15 cm. Conclusion: Considering the small numeric difference, the results suggested that there were no clinical differences in the size of palatal shelves between stage 1 (prior to cheiloplasty) and 2 (prior to palatoplasty).FAPESP 2012/1465

Selanylimidazopyridine Prevents Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Depressive-Like Behavior in Mice by Targeting Neurotrophins and Inflammatory/Oxidative Mediators

    Get PDF
Inasmuch, as the major depressive disorder (MDD) has been characterized as a heterogeneous disease as the inflammatory processes, neurotrophic factors’ dysfunction and oxidative/nitrosative stress are believed to play a vital role in its establishment. Organoselenium compounds stand out due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and antidepressant effects. In this sense, the present study investigated the effect of 3-((4-methoxyphenyl)selanyl)-2-phenylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine (MPI; 20 and 50 mg/kg, intragastrically) pretreatment [30 min prior lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge (0.83 mg/kg)] on acute LPS induced depressive-like behavior, neuroinflammation, and oxidative stress. MPI was able to prevent the increased immobility time induced by LPS on the forced swimming test (FST), the increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines’ expression in the hippocampus (HC) of mice after LPS challenge via NFkB downregulation, and the increase of the reactive oxygen species generation and lipid peroxidation in the prefrontal cortex and HC of mice. It was observed that at the doses tested, MPI protected against reducing levels of BDNF in the cortex and HC of mice challenged with LPS. These observations suggest that the antidepressant-like effect of MPI depends on its capacity to modulate the inflammatory, antioxidant, and neurotrophic systems

Herbicides applications are usually held with specific environmental conditions that may influence the efficacy of these products. This research was conducted to evaluate the influence of application times of glyphosate and glyphosate + 2.4-D herbicides in Polygonum convolvulus weed control. The experiment was developed with vases arranged in field conditions. The treatments were constituted by glyphosate (960 g ha-1) and glyphosate + 2.4-D (960 + 335 g ha-1) herbicides, both applied in 25 and 9/26/2015, in 10:00 PM hour, 03:00 AM hour, 7:00 AM hour; mid day hour and 5:00 PM hour and a check without application, for controlling P. convolvulus weed. Experimental units were constituted by plastic vases with four plants in three to five leaves stage, kept in natural conditions of application until 28 DAA (days after application). Applications were conducted with a costal spray with four spray nozzles AVI 110.02, 210 kPa pressure, displacement speed of 3.6 km h-1 and an application applying rate of 200 L ha-1. Results indicated that glyphosate and glyphosate + 2.4-D controlled efficiently the weed from 14 DAA, regardless of application hour. However, significant reductions were observed in control efficiency and dry matter production of weed at noon, as well as lower spray deposition of glyphosate + 2.4-D, at all times
