Chemical Composition and Fermentation Profile of Perennial Peanut and Marandu Grass Mixed Silages

    Get PDF
Perennial peanut has high quality, evidenced by the improvement of animal production in grazing, due to good contents of crude protein and digestibility, which makes it one of the best alternatives for low cost feeding (Paganella and Valls 2002). Grass ensilage associated with legumes is considered an alternative to meet the protein demand of cattle in the livestock. However, due to limited information on the techniques of grass ensilage with tropical legumes, this research aimed to evaluate the chemical composition and the fermentation profile of perennial peanut and Marandu mixed grass silages, treated or not with bacterial inoculant

Physicochemical and dyeing properties using reactive dyes of curaua and banana fibers were studied by means of color strength (K/S), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analyses. SEM analysis of alkali-treated fibers showed an increase in roughness due to surface lignin and hemicellulose defibrillation. DSC analysis showed for all the samples an endothermic and an exothermic peak at 70–80 and 340–360 ̊C due to the loss of adsorbed/ absorbed water and to decomposition of α-cellulose, respectively. Alkali-treated fibers dis- played a second peak around 290 ̊C attributed to the degradation of hemicellulose. FTIR spectra of the studied fibers show similar bands with different intensities attributed to the main components of cellulose-based materials. Alkali-pretreated fibers demonstrated excel- lent dyeing ability for all the tested dyes. Dye absorption depends on the chemical fiber, dye structure, and concentration. The results of washing fastness are very good for all the tested fibers. The dyeing effluent treated with an advanced microfiltration method using an improved alumina ceramic membrane shows an average efficiency of 98% in turbidity and color reduction. Low-cost ceramic alumina microfiltration membranes are a very promising advanced treatment for textile industrial effluents allowing water reuse.C2011-UMINHO-2C2T-01 acknowledges the funding from Programa Compromisso para a Ciência 2008, Portugal

BACKGROUND: Due to its origin, peanut has a very narrow genetic background. Wild relatives can be a source of genetic variability for cultivated peanut. In this study, the transcriptome of the wild species Arachis stenosperma accession V10309 was analyzed. RESULTS: ESTs were produced from four cDNA libraries of RNAs extracted from leaves and roots of A. stenosperma. Randomly selected cDNA clones were sequenced to generate 8,785 ESTs, of which 6,264 (71.3%) had high quality, with 3,500 clusters: 963 contigs and 2537 singlets. Only 55.9% matched homologous sequences of known genes. ESTs were classified into 23 different categories according to putative protein functions. Numerous sequences related to disease resistance, drought tolerance and human health were identified. Two hundred and six microsatellites were found and markers have been developed for 188 of these. The microsatellite profile was analyzed and compared to other transcribed and genomic sequence data. CONCLUSION: This is, to date, the first report on the analysis of transcriptome of a wild relative of peanut. The ESTs produced in this study are a valuable resource for gene discovery, the characterization of new wild alleles, and for marker development. The ESTs were released in the [GenBank:EH041934 to EH048197]

Deciding case by case on family presence in the emergency care service

Objective: To understand how physicians and nurses experience and perceive the presence of families in the emergency care service. Methods: This was a qualitative study that used symbolic interactionism as a theoretical reference, and grounded theory as a methodological reference. Twenty professionals participated – equally representing physicians and nurses - working in two emergency rooms located in the south of Brazil. Data were collected between October of 2016 and February of 2017, by means of interviews. Results: The existence of a social culture of family exclusion was identifi ed, widely diffused and practiced by professionals. However, families sometimes remain with their loved ones in the emergency room, since professionals analyze and decide “case by case”, considering different aspects throughout the care process. Conclusion: Multiple aspects are related in determining family presence during emergency care for physicians and nurses. Thus, a single directive on the presence of the family is not prudent. In fact, it is suggested that each health unit develop its protocols, considering local particularities. Reports of the use of tropical legumes in silage production are scarce as these legumes have high contents of crude protein, low water soluble carbohydrate and high buffering capacity, which inhibit the production of silages with good fermentation and nutritional characteristics. Recent research has, however, shown that it is possible to produce good quality silages using tropical legumes (Pereira et al. 2012). Souza et al. (2012) concluded that silage produced from Stylosanthes cv. Campo Grande (Stylosanthes capitata + Stylosanthes macrocephala) at 60% proportion of the dry matter of the diet can replace corn silage in diets for beef cattle in feedlots without altering their intake and productive performance. However, the ideal proportion of this silage in the diets for beef cattle is still unknown. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the intake and performance of beef cattle fed diets with Stylosanthes and corn silages

This study evaluated the sexual performance of patients with genital ambiguity that had been submitted to corrective genitalsurgery. It was done a survey among the patients with genital ambiguity, undergone surgical correction, now aged 16 years oldor older and who had already initiated a sex life of a university clinic of intersexuality. Later, it was applied the Golombok RustInventory of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS). Twenty patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria: age older than or equal to 15 yearsold and submitted to surgical correction were selected. Of those, only four patients had begun their sex life. Several problemsrelating to sexuality were identified: Low frequency of relations, inappropriate sexual communication, sexual dissatisfaction, and sexual avoidance, lack of expression of sensuality, Vaginism and anorgasmia. Among those difficulties, the “low frequencyof relations” has been detected in all patients. It was detected that sexual function is altered in patients undergoing correctivegenital surgery. However, we can not say whether this is due to the basic pathology or if it is a sole consequence of the surgicalcorrection. This survey asks whether there is a negative effect resulting from corrective surgery of the genitalia, no sexual futureperformance of these patients. It questions also what the most propitious time to perform the surgery is: if in early childhoodor during adolescence. Todas as pacientes tinham pouca frequência do intercurso sexual e evitação sexual, e três delas expressaram falta deexpressão do desejo sexual e insatisfação sexual. Observou-se que a função sexual está alterada em pacientes submetidasà correção genital cirúrgica, porém não se pode afirmar se isso é consequência exclusiva da correção cirúrgica, ou decorrenteda patologia de base
