Elementos-traço metálicos em mexilhões da Ilha Urubuqueçaba, na Baía de Santos, Brasil
The objective of this work was to verify the existence of bioaccumulation in mussels of the species Perna perna, by determining the concentration of metal trace elements, in Urubuqueçaba Island, Santos Bay, Santos, SP, Brazil. Mussels were collected in natural banks and rocky shores, and sampling took place from April 2010 to June 2011. The concentration of the trace metal elements – aluminum, cadmium, cromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, lead, and zinc – was determined according to mussel sex, length, and seasonality classes, in a flame atomic absorption spectrometer. Statistical analyses were applied to the results with the use of the software PAST, with parametric and nonparametric approaches, at 5% probability. In the summer, mussels show the highest concentrations of cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc. Females of P. perna concentrate more copper; for the other elements, there are no significant differences between sexes. The length classes with the highest concentrations are 3.5–5.5 cm for Al and Fe, and 6.5–8.5 cm for Cr.O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a existência de bioacumulação em mexilhões da espécie Perna perna, por meio da determinação da concentração dos elementos-traço metálicos, na Ilha Urubuqueçaba, na Baía de Santos, Santos, SP, Brasil. Mortality from gastrointestinal congenital anomalies at 264 hospitals in 74 low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries: a multicentre, international, prospective cohort study
Summary
Background Congenital anomalies are the fifth leading cause of mortality in children younger than 5 years globally.
Many gastrointestinal congenital anomalies are fatal without timely access to neonatal surgical care, but few studies
have been done on these conditions in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). We compared outcomes of
the seven most common gastrointestinal congenital anomalies in low-income, middle-income, and high-income
countries globally, and identified factors associated with mortality.
Methods We did a multicentre, international prospective cohort study of patients younger than 16 years, presenting to
hospital for the first time with oesophageal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, intestinal atresia, gastroschisis,
exomphalos, anorectal malformation, and Hirschsprung’s disease. Recruitment was of consecutive patients for a
minimum of 1 month between October, 2018, and April, 2019. We collected data on patient demographics, clinical
status, interventions, and outcomes using the REDCap platform. Patients were followed up for 30 days after primary
intervention, or 30 days after admission if they did not receive an intervention. The primary outcome was all-cause,
in-hospital mortality for all conditions combined and each condition individually, stratified by country income status.
We did a complete case analysis.
Findings We included 3849 patients with 3975 study conditions (560 with oesophageal atresia, 448 with congenital
diaphragmatic hernia, 681 with intestinal atresia, 453 with gastroschisis, 325 with exomphalos, 991 with anorectal
malformation, and 517 with Hirschsprung’s disease) from 264 hospitals (89 in high-income countries, 166 in middleincome
countries, and nine in low-income countries) in 74 countries. Of the 3849 patients, 2231 (58·0%) were male.
Median gestational age at birth was 38 weeks (IQR 36–39) and median bodyweight at presentation was 2·8 kg (2·3–3·3).
Mortality among all patients was 37 (39·8%) of 93 in low-income countries, 583 (20·4%) of 2860 in middle-income
countries, and 50 (5·6%) of 896 in high-income countries (p<0·0001 between all country income groups).
Gastroschisis had the greatest difference in mortality between country income strata (nine [90·0%] of ten in lowincome
countries, 97 [31·9%] of 304 in middle-income countries, and two [1·4%] of 139 in high-income countries;
p≤0·0001 between all country income groups). Factors significantly associated with higher mortality for all patients
combined included country income status (low-income vs high-income countries, risk ratio 2·78 [95% CI 1·88–4·11],
p<0·0001; middle-income vs high-income countries, 2·11 [1·59–2·79], p<0·0001), sepsis at presentation (1·20
[1·04–1·40], p=0·016), higher American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score at primary intervention
(ASA 4–5 vs ASA 1–2, 1·82 [1·40–2·35], p<0·0001; ASA 3 vs ASA 1–2, 1·58, [1·30–1·92], p<0·0001]), surgical safety
checklist not used (1·39 [1·02–1·90], p=0·035), and ventilation or parenteral nutrition unavailable when needed
(ventilation 1·96, [1·41–2·71], p=0·0001; parenteral nutrition 1·35, [1·05–1·74], p=0·018). Administration of
parenteral nutrition (0·61, [0·47–0·79], p=0·0002) and use of a peripherally inserted central catheter (0·65
[0·50–0·86], p=0·0024) or percutaneous central line (0·69 [0·48–1·00], p=0·049) were associated with lower mortality.
Interpretation Unacceptable differences in mortality exist for gastrointestinal congenital anomalies between lowincome,
middle-income, and high-income countries. Improving access to quality neonatal surgical care in LMICs will
be vital to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 of ending preventable deaths in neonates and children younger
than 5 years by 2030
Effects of sublethal concentration of water-soluble fraction (WSF) of petroleum on parameters of the innate immune system and hepatic of marine fish Rachycentron canadum (LINNAEUS, 1766).
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of sublethal concentration of 0.3 ppm of the petroleum WSF in parameters of the innate immune system and hepatic of Rachycentron canadum, after the periods of 7 and 14 days. It was observed a decrease in condition factor of animals exposed for 14 days compared to control group. The differential leukocyte count showed an increased number of total leukocytes after 7 days and decreased after 14 days. The activity of the lysozyme enzyme in group exposed for 14 days was higher compared to the control group. There were, also, changes in gill, kidney and liver tissues in groups exposed to WSF of petroleum for 7 and 14 days. It was noted an increase of the hepatosomatic index and AST enzyme activity of animals exposed WSF. It was not observed activity of the enzyme ALT in all groups. It was concluded that the sublethal concentration of 0.3 ppm of the WSF of petroleum alters parameters of the innate immune system and hepatic of R. canadum that may cause immunosuppression and biotransformation system impairment
Morphologic alterations of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (Linnaeus, 1758) exposed to waters of Billings dam.
The Billings dam shows eutrophic waters due to the large amount of sewage from urban occupation neaby, and consequently, the fish can be a public health problem. The gills and liver become target organs for the action of pollutants in the aquatic environment and may present several levels of biological organization. These biological responses to stress caused by pollutants can be used to identify early signs of damage to fish and can be called biomarkers. Thus, this project aimed to analyze the histological gills and liver of Nile Tilapia, by means of measurements, Histological Alterations Index and Assessment Medium Value; the frequency of micronuclei was done. We observed histological alterations in gills and livers of Nile Tilapia classified as mild to severe, and the presence of micronucleus. The results enable better environmental monitoring and quality control of this species
Titanium dioxide nanoparticles alter routine metabolism and cause histopathological alterations in oreochromis niloticus
Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) could cause alterations in exposed aquatic species, in terms of oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion and tissues functionality therefore, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the effects of acute exposure to different concentrations of TiO2NPs (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.5 mgL-1) on routine metabolism (oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion) and histological parameters (branchial and hepatic) in Oreochromis niloticus. After 24 hours, we observed an increase in oxygen consumption of 2.36 and 3.23 times in groups exposed to 1.0 and 2.5 mgL-1 of TiO2NPs respectively, as well as an increase in ammonia excretion of 3.54, 4.0 and 4.82 times higher in groups exposed to 0.5, 1.0 and 2.5 mgL-1 of TiO2NPs respectively, compared to the control group. Histological analysis showed, after 72 hours, moderate to severe alterations in both gills and liver of TiO2 exposed fish at concentrations 1.0 and 2.5 mgL-1, the severity and occurrence of the alteration observed was grade 3 (severe and extensive pathological alterations). We concluded that waterborne exposure of Nile tilapia to TiO2NPs caused alteration in routine metabolism and histological parameters in a dose-dependent manner
Effects of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and carbofuran on metabolism in Astyanax ribeirae, a native species
The study of the toxic effect of carbofuran and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on Astyanax ribeirae metabolism is of paramount importance due to the increasing use of this pesticide in agriculture and in the production of nanotubes within the material industry. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of carbofuran, MWCNT, and the combination of these compounds on specific oxygen consumption and excretion of ammonia in A. ribeirae. Therefore, 65 fish were divided into three groups of treatments at varying concentrations: carbofuran (0.01, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 mg/L), MWCNT (0.1, 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 mg/L), and 0.5 mg/L of MWCNT added to carbofuran concentrations (0.01, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 mg/L). The average specific oxygen consumption in the groups exposed to carbofuran, compared to the control, increased 73.49% at the 0.01 mg/L concentration and decreased 63.86% and 91.57% with treatments of 0.1 and 0.5 mg/L, respectively. For groups exposed to the MWCNT, there was an 83.91% drop with the 1.0 mg/L treatment, and the carbofuran + MWCNT groups recorded a decrease of 71.09%, 92.77%, and 93.98% at concentrations of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 mg/L, respectively. In relation to specific ammonia excretion, in groups exposed to carbofuran compared to the control, there was an increase of 134.37% and 200% with the 0.1 and 0.5 mg/L treatments, respectively. The group exposed to carbofuran + MWCNT experienced a decrease of 60% and 80% with treatments of 0.1 mg/L carbofuran + 0.5 mg/L MWCNT and 0.5 mg/L carbofuran + 0.5 mg/L MWCNT, respectively. Therefore, it was concluded that carbofuran + MWCNT interact, increasing the effects in Astyanax sp451417426CNPQ - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e TecnológicoFAPESP – Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa Do Estado De São Paulo303920/2013-0503 2012/50184-

Histopathological alterations in the gills of Nile tilapia exposed to carbofuran and multiwalled carbon nanotubes
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Carbofuran is a nematicide insecticide with a broad spectrum of action. Carbofuran has noxious effects in several species and has been banned in the USA and Europe; however, it is still used in Brazil. Aquatic organisms are not only exposed to pesticides but also to manufactured nanoparticles, and the potential interaction of these compounds therefore requires investigation. The aim of this study was to examine the histopathological alterations in the gills of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) to determine possible effects of exposure to carbofuran, nitric acid-treated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (HNO3-MWCNTs) and the combination of carbofuran with nanotubes. Juvenile fish were exposed to different concentrations of carbofuran (0.1, 0.5, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 mg/L), different concentrations of HNO3_MWCNTs (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/L) or different concentrations of carbofuran (0.1, 0.5, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 mg/L) with 1.0 mg/L of HNO3_MWCNTs. After 24 h of exposure, the animals were removed from the aquarium, the spinal cord was transversely sectioned, and the second gill arch was removed for histological evaluation. Common histological changes included dislocation of the epithelial cells, hyperplasia of the epithelial cells along the secondary lamellae, aneurism, and dilation and disarrangement of the capillaries. All the groups exposed to carbofuran demonstrated a dose-dependent correlation in the Histological Alteration Index; the values found for carbofuran and carbon nanotubes were up to 25% greater than for carbofuran alone. This result indicates an interaction between these toxicants, with enhanced ecotoxic effects. This work contributes to the understanding of the environmental impacts of nanomaterials on aquatic organisms, which is necessary for the sustainable development of nanotechnologies.
