This means not only a greater involvement in events in other parts of the world, but also a reassessment of one’s own position in the enlarged society. When the individual’s subjective world of knowledge is widened from the immediate surroundings to a global perspective, the self-categorization needs to be redefined to obtain relevance in the new context. In this study, I examine the concepts that within the discourses of Islam as “the Other” represent the collective community by means of rhetorical analysis as outlined by Chaïm Perelman. My focus is on the articulated positions for collective identification – on the groupness constructed and reinforced in the dichotomic relationship. Nationalism is a central ideological aspect of boundary making – the nation, however, has a less important role as factor for identification in connection to global discourses on Islam. Instead the notions of Europe and the West function as the entities where the “own” and “right” values and traditions prevail. By excluding specific values, norms and cultural attributes from these concepts, denominators for collective identifications are constructed. Media rhetoric is from the constructionist perspective, as developed by Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann, a central element in the societal knowledge production. An inquiry in how the notions of collective identification are rhetorically mediated provides insight in the premises and knowledge structures of these positions. Suomesta Syyrian ja Irakin konfliktikentälle suuntautuva liikkuvuus

Tutkimuksessa selvitetään miksi ja miten Syyrian ja Irakin konfliktikenttien ja siellä toimivien aseellisten järjestöjen – erityisesti Isisin – on onnistunut houkutella toimintansa piiriin suomalaislähtöisiä musliminuoria. Tutkimus perustuu konfliktialueelle suuntautuvaan liikkuvuuteen kytköksissä olevien henkilöiden haastatteluihin sekä heidän viestintäänsä sosiaalisessa mediassa. Tutkittavat samaistuvat voimakkaasti konfliktikentillä kärsivien ”todellisten muslimien” kanssa. Syyrian ja Irakin konfliktien vetovoima syntyikin ennen kaikkea tarpeesta puolustaa ”muslimiveljiä” ja ”-sisaria”. Tutkimusteemaa taustoittavassa osiossa tarkastellaan kuinka ajatus ”muslimien puolustamisesta” globaalissa kentässä rakentuu ja kuinka se sijoittuu suhteessa suomalaisten muslimiyhteisöjen järjestäytymisen historiaan aina 1980-1990 lukujen taitteesta alkaen. Empiirisiin aineistoihimme perustuvassa osuudessa tarkastellaan vierastaistelijailmiön taustatekijöitä, konfliktikentälle suuntautuvan liikkuvuuden luonnetta sekä sieltä takaisin Suomeen matkustaneiden henkilöiden elämäntilanteita. Tutkimukseen osallistuneet jakavat unelman muslimien globaalista yhtenäisyydestä, mutta ovat samalla tietoisia moniäänisten muslimiyhteisöjen keskuudessa vallitsevista erimielisyyksistä, jotka koskevat strategioita ja toiminnan tapoja, joilla tavoitella yhtenäisyyttä. Syyriaan matkustaminen näyttäytyykin tämän tutkimuksen valossa yhtenä välietappina prosessissa, jossa nuoret etsivät vastauksia itseään askarruttaviin kysymyksiin sekä rakentavat ja uudelleenmäärittelevät uskonnollisia kantojaan. Palanneisiin kohdistunut turvallisuuspoliittinen huomio on tuottanut vakavia muslimiyhteisöjen sisäisiä jännitteitä ja niiden välistä kilpailua, koska terrorismin torjunnan varjolla voidaan suunnata rahoitusta, marginalisoida tiettyjä tahoja ja voimistaa toisia. Tilanne on tuottanut vakavan luottamuspulan ja vaikenemisen kulttuurin, joka heijastuu niin järjestäytyneisiin muslimi yhteisöihin kuin ystäväpiireihinkin

Europe and the West function as categories for self-categorization in connection to the discourses on Islam with global characteristics, thus restraining the relevance of the nation as a factor for collective identification in this specific context. These concepts are not reflected upon – they appear in a naturalized form – and that there are contradictions within them – opposite positions within the same conversational field. This would imply that the concepts in their naturalized form legitimate their own substance. The concepts within the discourses of Islam as the Other are representing the own collective community – what is considered European and Western, representing the Western World and Europe. This study focuses on the questions: what the concordances and contradictions in the rhetoric on these concepts are, how the themes they build upon are legitimized, what perspectives and viewpoints are dominant, what argumentation strategies are used and which authorities are referred to. The material in this work consists of all opinion articles debating the caricatures of Prophet Muhammad from seven Swedish-language dailies in Finland from a six months period in 2006.

Making Enemies : Reactive Dynamics of Discursive Polarization

We approach polarization as a historically evolving process of identity-construction, focusing on the back-and-forth movement of action and reaction between the various actors involved. We show how, through scapegoating, denigration, etc., the parties tend to alienate each other, actively making their enemies. In specifically discursive terms, we analyse ways in which discourse in polarized settings tends to become deadlocked, mutually hostile and in other ways limited and distorted in its communicative function, sketching various part-logics of polarization, including a logic of ‘doubles’, a logic of ‘shibboleths and taboos’, and of ‘pollution and paranoid extension’.Peer reviewe
