    Transform your training: practical approaches to interactive Information Literacy teaching

    This article describes how the Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) Library has integrated interactivity into its information literacy (IL) training. Research has shown that interactivity is an important aspect of enhancing the learning process and this has been recognised in MMU's InfoSkills training programme. This paper will consider the theory behind adult learners and preferred learning styles and will illustrate specific examples of how MMU has included interactivity into its sessions. InfoSkills at MMU is taught through a variety of different methods, for example, lecturing, workshops and hands-on computer work. However, each of these alone is not enough and must be combined with other practical approaches in order to make training truly effective. Regardless of environment or technology available, active participation within MMU's InfoSkills sessions is key to enhancing students' independent learning. Although IL trainers at MMU have access to new technologies, such as interactive whiteboards and voting pods, these are not always accessible in every teaching location and so this article also refers to low-tech alternative methods. This paper hopes to provide practical ideas, for engaging students in interactive IL sessions that may inspire other IL trainers. It also gives information about future developments the InfoSkills team will be making in this area

    Molecular Detection Of Hematodinium Sp Infecting The Blue Crab, Callinectes Sapidus

    Species of Hematodinium are endoparasitic dinoflagellates of crustaceans. Certain stages of the parasites can be very difficult to detect in the hemolymph of their hosts, because the trophic stages resemble hemocytes, and they can occur at relatively low densities, making diagnosis by microscopy difficult. We developed a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay to detect the Hernatodinium sp. infecting the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, based on the amplification of the parasite\u27s first internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1) of the ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene complex. The PCR assay was combined with a restriction endonucleases digestion (Bsg I) of the amplification products to differentiate between different forms of Hematodinium from different hosts. The assay had a limit of detection equivalent to 0.3 parasites per 100-mu L hemolymph. In addition, two oligonucleotide DNA probes were designed to target the 18S rRNA gene sequence of the parasite, facilitating detection in situ in crustacean tissues. These probes appear to target several, if not all species within the genus, because they labeled all isolates of Hematodinium tested in this study, whereas they were not hybridizing to other parasite species. The PCR-RFLP assay will be invaluable for future studies investigating parasite prevalence, the existence of secondary hosts or environmental reservoirs, and modes of transmission, whereas the DNA probes will be useful for confirming and localizing Hematodinium parasites in crustacean tissues

    Honors and Non-Honors Student Engagement: A Model of Student, Curricular, and Institutional Characteristics

    Honors administrators may ask whether honors experiences facilitate student growth and whether honors students are inherently smarter than non-honors students and hence more able to seize these opportunities for growth. Although these questions will never fully be answered, we designed the current study to address the underlying topics of student characteristics and engagement in honors within the larger university. Students’ motivation, their willingness to extend beyond the minimal level, significantly influences engagement. Honors students are engaged in experiences, curricular and extracurricular, that promote development, and the types of additional opportunities available to honors students and the feedback they receive affect participation. The interaction between honors students and their instructional environment may encourage them to engage with available resources more fully than non-honors students do

    Attitudes to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender parents seeking health care for their children in two early parenting services in Australia

    Aim: to examine the attitudes to and knowledge and beliefs about homosexuality, of nurses and allied professionals in two early parenting services in Australia. Background: Early parenting services employ nurses and allied professionals. Access and inclusion policies are important in community health and early childhood service settings. However, little is known about the perceptions of professionals who work within early parenting services in relation to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families. Design: This is the final in a series of studies and was undertaken in two early parenting services in two states in Australia using a cross-sectional design with quantitative and qualitative approaches. Methods: Validated questionnaires were completed by 51 nurses and allied professionals and tested with Chi-squared test of independence (or Fisher’s exact test), Mann–Whitney U-test, Kruskal–Wallis one-way analysis of variance, or Spearman’s rank correlation. Thematic analysis examined qualitative data collected in a box for free comments. Results: Of the constructs measured by the questionnaires, no significant relationships were found in knowledge, attitude and gay affirmative practice scores by sociodemographic variables or professional group. However, attitude to lesbians and to gay men scores were significantly negatively affected by conservative political affiliation (p=0.038), held religious beliefs (p=0.011), and frequency of praying (p=0.018). Six overall themes were found: respect, parenting role, implications for the child, management, disclosure, resources and training. Conclusions: The study provided an in-depth analysis of the attitudes, knowledge and beliefs of professionals in two early parenting services, showing that work is needed to promote acceptance of diversity and the inclusion of LGBT families in planning, developing, evaluating and accessing early parenting services. Relevance to clinical practice: Access and inclusion plans for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families are crucial in early parenting services in Australia and should be included in professional development programs
