Introduction: Misinterpretation of intrusive thoughts because of obsessive beliefs has been thought to be important in the development of obsessive compulsive symptoms. In current study, (I) the difference between OCD patients and healthy controls in regard of obsessive beliefs and (II) the relation of obsesive beliefs with the prevelance and severity of obsessive compulsive symptoms was investigated. Methods: The current study included 47 OCD patients and 44 healthy controls who have same properties with regard to age, sex and duration of education. All subjects were applied to Obsessive Beliefs Scale, Maudsley Obsessive Compulsive Scale, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale. OCD patients were applied to Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale as well as the other scales. Results: In analyses by controlling depression and anxiety scores, OCD patients had significantly higher scores than controls, with regard to all subscales of Obsessive Beliefs Scale. Also, prevalence of obsessive compulsive symptoms other than cleaning were correlated with obsessive beliefs about “responsibility and threat estimation” and “perfectionism and need for certainty”. Hovewer, there was no correlation in between severity of obsessive compulsive symptoms and subscale scores of Obsessive Beliefs Scale. Conclusion: Excluding the effects of depression and anxiety, generally the results suggests that obsessive beliefs have an important role for development of obsessive compulsive symptoms. Future studies of seperated OCD subgroup with regard to obsessive compulsive symptoms will be helpful in determinig the difference among these subgroups in regard of obsessive beliefs. © 2015 by Turkish Association of Neuropsychiatry

Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are acknowledged worldwide as the drivers of socio-economic development due to their important role in GDP growth, new job creation and entrepreneurship. Despite the immense impact of the most severe economic crisis modern world has witnessed on the SME sector, number of scholarly studies focusing on the investigation of the performance factors of the SME sector during and after the crisis is interestingly very limited. This study aims to fill this gap in the SME literature, by conducting comparative analyses on main indicators of SME sector performance in major advanced and emerging economies.Findings of the study indicate that, economic growth and development of SME sector are closely linked in both developed and developing economies, while new venture creation, employment and value-added contribution oft he SME sector to the economy significantly differ across different contexts, within the post-crisis era

Late Ottoman Perspectives on the South African War (1899-1902): the Work of Ismail Kemal Vlora

    Get PDF
The South African War of 1899−1902 or Anglo-Boer War was one of the modern examples of propaganda in history. It revealed an enormous agitprop conducted by British and Boer forces. The European and American public closely followed the struggle between the mighty British Empire and the “little white Christians”. This thesis examines the pro-British propaganda of the Ottoman intellectuals and policy-makers by focusing on the work of Ismail Kemal Vlora, Transval Meselesi. Ismail Kemal Bey’s pamphlet on the war is a crucial propagandist instrument and legitimiser of British imperialism in South Africa and in other British colonies. This work aims to grasp the understanding of imperialism and civilisation by the pro-British Ottoman intelligentsia, by looking at their attitude towards the South African War of 1899-1902. In this sense, it aims to make a contribution to Ottoman and South African history

Countries trying to increase their production in the industrial sector wish to have access to cheap energy. However, a rise in oil prices affects the industrial production of countries dependent on oil. Furthermore, as production costs increase, the general level of prices also increases. This study aims to examine the long-term effects of the rise in oil prices on the industrial production index and the CPI in the Turkish economy. Since the study measures the impact of Brent crude oil prices on the industrial production index and CPI for the Turkish economy, it contributes to the literature. In this respect, the study investigated the relationships among the specified variables for the 2010: Q1-2020: Q4 period of the Turkish economy. Phillips-Ouliaris cointegration test and Granger and Bootstrap causality test were used to analyze the relationship among the variables. A long-term relationship was found between the variables. According to the results of both causality tests, it was determined that the rise in oil prices raised the CPI by increasing the cost of industrial production in the Turkish economy. The findings show that oil prices should be monitored closely by actors of economic management

Abstract. Dynamic capabilities framework which is the combination of internal processes, resource utilization and structural transformations that have to be strategically formulated and managed for gaining sustained competitive advantage in rapidly changing environments became largely influential not only in strategic management field but had a significant impact on several areas of management (Di Stefano, et al., 2010, Barreto, 2010). After the introduction of the dynamic capabilities approach, the contributions from the initiator of the approach David J. Teece and several other important strategy and management scholars gave way to the development of a new capabilities theory of the “innovative” firm as well the evolution of the fresh domain of entrepreneurial management. The current review aims to analyze the antecedents of dynamic capabilities and the development of this new theory through the works of David J. Teece and acknowledge his crucial contribution to fields of management, strategy, and entrepreneurship.Keywords. Dynamic capabilities, Entrepreneurial management, Competitive advantage.JEL. The impact of gender and social capital on entrepreneurial intentions in university students: evidence from Turkey

    Get PDF
Understanding the antecedents of the intention to become an entrepreneur is crucial in the development of effective entrepreneurship education and training programs. Despite the growing number of conceptual and empirical studies, the insights on the psychological factors that drive or discourage the engagement into entrepreneurial acts among university students are still limited. The current study aims to address this gap in the literature, by exploring the direct relationships between the impact of personal attitude (PA), perceived behavioral control (PBC) and subjective norms (SN) constructs of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) on entrepreneurial intention (EI). The study further investigates the existence of a potential difference with respect to gender and social capital on EI. For data collection, the entrepreneurial intention scale of Linan & Chen (2009) was used and questionnaires collected from a sample of 113 university students were analyzed through multiple regression analyses. Findings indicate that the impact of SN on EIare negative whereas PA and PBC have strong and positive associations with the intention to become an entrepreneur. Furthermore, the results of the independent t-tests show do not indicate a meaningful difference with respect to gender and social capital and entrepreneurial intention, whereas differences between departments and taking or not taking an entrepreneurship course are found to be significantly associated with EI. For theory, these findings imply that both the scale of Linan & Chen (2009) and the model of TPB are useful in predicting entrepreneurial intention for this sample. For practice, the results highlight the important role of education in choosing entrepreneurship as a career at undergraduate level whereas gender difference or having an entrepreneur in the family or close third parties is not reported to affect this decision

Thesis (Master)--Izmir Institute of Technology, Energy Engineering, Izmir, 2005Includes bibliographical references (leaves: 113-116)Text in English; Abstract: Turkish and Englishxiv, 122 leavesIn recent years, various rotating buildings such as residential buildings, restaurants and pubs have been designed and constructed. Most of these rotating buildings do not possess passive solar design features or they cannot respond passive solar design principles entirely because the primary design purpose of these rotating buildings is to make all spaces view the landscape as required.Passive solar design is the optimum utilization of architectural peculiarities of a building and appropriate material selection for improving energy efficiency of a building in heating, cooling and natural lighting. While projecting a passive solar building, different factors including building orientation, latitude of the location and climatic properties must be taken into consideration.Although passive solar buildings are superior to conventional buildings in terms of various aspects, they have some deficiencies as well. Despite insulation, largesouthfacing windows which are designed to maximize solar heat gain in winter turn out to be heat loss areas in cold winter nights. They also cause excessive solar heat gain in summer. So as to eliminate such disadvantages of passive solar buildings, direction of buildings can be changed in winter and in summer by rotating them. In this project, a rotating building.s thermal performance is investigated. For doing this, a thorough literature review is carried out. First, passive solar design tools are identified. Second, examples of rotating buildings are analysed. Then, a rotating cafe located at IZTECH Campus . IYTE Cafe - is designed on the basis of passive solar design criteria. The cafe is assumed to be rotating two times a year and performance of the building is compared with a conventional passive solar building by calculating heat gain and heat loss of each building. It is found that, substantial energy savings could be possible through a rotating building. Furthermore, energy savings in summer and in winter conditions are calculated respectively as 14 % and 23 %

Objective: This meta-analysis study aimed to test the relationship between depression and anxiety symptoms by analyzing the studies on depression and anxiety symptoms in Turkey. The study was carried out in two stages to determine the effect of depression sypmtoms on the anxiety sypmtoms, and the moderators that could affect the mean effect size obtained in this study. Method: In order to determine the studies that will be included in the meta-analysis, a search was made in the National Higher Education Council’s National Thesis Center, ULAKBIM Social and Humanities Database, ULAKBIM Medical Data Base and Google Academic Database. In this phase, all studies including depression and anxiety were recorded by using the terms related with anxiety and depression. The screening process was reduced to title, keyword and summary fields to create study pool (143 studies). Subsequently, with the detailed examination of studies, 74 studies were excluded and 69 studies were included in the sample in accordance with the study criteria. The Pearson Correlation Coefficient (r) was calculated as the effect size in the analysis and the random effect model was used. Results: In the study, the mean effect size depression on anxiety was calculated as 0.53, with a lower limit value of 0.48 and an upper limit value of 0.58. In addition, there was a difference between the size of effect observed in the study and the size of the virtual effect generated according to the random effects model aimed to correct the effect caused by the publication bias. Conclusion: Confidence intervals of 69 studies included in meta-analysis study were narrow, meaning that the decisions which will be made taking into consideration the data obtained from these studies are reliable. It has been found that depression has a positive effect on a wide range of anxiety. According to these findings, as depression levels increase, anxiety levels also increase, or as depression levels decrease, anxiety levels decrease. Overall, moderator variables of anxiety type, anxiety scale, and depression scale affect the relationship between depression and anxiety of individuals. Anxiety and depression levels can vary according to these moderator variables.
