A new orthogonalization procedure with an extremal property
Various methods of constructing an orthonomal set out of a given set of
linearly independent vectors are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the
Gram-Schmidt and the Schweinler-Wigner orthogonalization procedures. A new
orthogonalization procedure which, like the Schweinler- Wigner procedure, is

Augmenting graphs to minimize the diameter
We study the problem of augmenting a weighted graph by inserting edges of
bounded total cost while minimizing the diameter of the augmented graph. Our

Soliton response to transient trap variations
The response of bright and dark solitons to rapid variations in an expulsive
longitudinal trap is investigated. We concentrate on the effect of transient
changes in the trap frequency in the form of temporal delta kicks and the
hyperbolic cotangent functions. Exact expressions are obtained for the soliton
profiles. This is accomplished using the fact that a suitable linear
Schrodinger stationary state solution in time can be effectively combined with
the solutions of non-linear Schrodinger equation, for obtaining solutions of
the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with time dependent scattering length in a
harmonic trap. Interestingly, there is rapid pulse amplification in certain
scenarios
Identification of polymorphic allozyme markers for population structure analysis in Horabagrus brachysoma (Gunther, 1864).
Fourteen polymorphic allozyme loci were identified in yellow catfish, Horabagrus
brachysoma. The genetic variation detected at each allozyme locus was assessed
for samples collected from three rivers. The observed heterozygosities per locus
ranged from 0.0286 to 0.4000. Significant genotype heterogeneity indicated that
the samples are not drawn from same gene pool. The results suggest the potential
of the identified loci to analyze stock structure of natural populations of
H. brachysoma
Genome-wide association studies of the self-rating of effects of ethanol (SRE).
The level of response (LR) to alcohol as measured with the Self-Report of the Effects of Alcohol Retrospective Questionnaire (SRE) evaluates the number of standard drinks usually required for up to four effects. The need for a higher number of drinks for effects is genetically influenced and predicts higher risks for heavy drinking and alcohol problems. We conducted genome-wide association study (GWAS) in the African-American (COGA-AA, N = 1527 from 309 families) and European-American (COGA-EA, N = 4723 from 956 families) subsamples of the Collaborative Studies on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) for two SRE scores: SRE-T (average of first five times of drinking, the period of heaviest drinking, and the most recent 3 months of consumption) and SRE-5 (the first five times of drinking). We then meta-analyzed the two COGA subsamples (COGA-AA + EA). Both SRE-T and SRE-5 were modestly heritable (h2 : 21%-31%) and genetically correlated with alcohol dependence (AD) and DSM-IV AD criterion count (rg : 0.35-0.76). Genome-wide significant associations were observed (SRE-T: chromosomes 6, rs140154945, COGA-EA P = 3.30E-08 and 11, rs10647170, COGA-AA+EA P = 3.53E-09; SRE-5: chromosome13, rs4770359, COGA-AA P = 2.92E-08). Chromosome 11 was replicated in an EA dataset from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism intramural program. In silico functional analyses and RNA expression analyses suggest that the chromosome 6 locus is an eQTL for KIF25. Polygenic risk scores derived using the COGA SRE-T and SRE-5 GWAS predicted 0.47% to 2.48% of variances in AD and DSM-IV AD criterion count in independent datasets. This study highlights the genetic contribution of alcohol response phenotypes to the etiology of alcohol use disorders
A Combination of Two Human Monoclonal Antibodies Limits Fetal Damage by Zika Virus in Macaques
Human infection by Zika virus (ZIKV) during pregnancy can lead to vertical transmission and fetal aberrations, including microcephaly. Prophylactic administration of antibodies can diminish or prevent ZIKV infection in animal models, but whether passive immunization can protect nonhuman primates and their fetuses during pregnancy has not been determined. Z004 and Z021 are neutralizing monoclonal antibodies to domain III of the envelope (EDIII) of ZIKV. Together the two antibodies protect nonpregnant macaques against infection even after Fc modifications to prevent antibody-dependent enhancement in vitro (ADE) and extend their half-lives. Here we report on prophylactic co-administration of the Fc-modified antibodies to pregnant rhesus macaques challenged 3 times with ZIKV during first and second trimester. The two antibodies did not entirely eliminate maternal viremia but limited vertical transmission protecting the fetus from neurologic damage. Thus, maternal passive immunization with two antibodies to EDIII can shield primate fetuses from the harmful effects of ZIKV
