    IPO Underpricing: Evidence From Malaysia

    The underpricing of initial public offerings (IPOs) are anomalies well documented by numerous empirical studies. The aim of this thesis is to examine whether or not a variety of different proxies employed under the asymmetric information theory particularly the Winner’s Curse and Signaling models influence underpricing in the Malaysian market. The study used a sample of 125 the Malaysian IPOs in the period between 2005 to 2009. The result shows that gross proceeds, underwriter, insider retention and market capitalization are significant in explaining the degree of underpricing in IPOs. However on other hand, the findings show that age of company and the gap between prospectus and listing dates could not explain the extent of underpricing in Malaysia for the studied period

    Genetic regulation of adult hippocampal neurogenesis: A Systems genetics approach using BXD recombinant inbred mouse strains

    Adult hippocampal neurogenesis is regulated at various levels and by various factors. Genetic influence is an important key determinant of adult neurogenesis and exerts its effects at all levels. In vivo studies have suggested that adult hippocampal neurogenesis is highly variable and heritable among different laboratory strains of mice. To dissect the genetic effect from other contributing factors, it is necessary to study adult neurogenesis under highly controlled environment conditions. We extracted adult hippocampal precursor cells (AHPCs) from 20 strains of the BXD set of recombinant inbred mice, cultured them and studied the effect of genetic background on neurogenesis. The BXD panel consists of mouse lines derived from an intercross between inbred parentals C57BL/6J and DBA/2J. Both of the parentals are fully sequenced and all the strains are well characterized in terms of genotypic and phenotypic characteristics. This allows us to use advanced genetic techniques to identify novel genomic loci and gene-gene interactions important in adult neurogenesis. Comparison of the AHPCs from 20 BXD strains, with respect to cell proliferation and neuronal and astrocytic differentiation in vitro, revealed a large variation for these traits across the strains. Proliferation, as measured by BrdU incorporation, showed over two- fold differences between the extremes. Similar differences were observed for neurogenic (4-fold) and astrogenic differentiation (2-fold). These three traits all showed strong heritability values indicating that the differences were mainly attributed to the genetic component. QTL mapping, with these phenotypic data, revealed that there was no major contribution from single loci controlling these traits. Instead, we found many loci with smaller effects associated with these traits. Gene expression profiling using RNA samples from proliferating cultures of the 20 BXD mice strains yielded two cis eQTL candidates that directly regulated proliferation, LRP6 and Chchd8. LRP6 is well known as a co-receptor of Wnt signaling, but the function of Chchd8 is not known. Further experimentation, using over expression and gene silencing demonstrated that LRP6 negatively regulates AHPCs proliferation. Thus, from this study using a system genetics approach, we were able to identify, LRP6 as a novel regulator of adult hippocampal neurogenesis

    A Dynamic Probabilistic Based Broadcasting Scheme for MANETs

    MANET is commonly known as Mobile Ad Hoc Network in which cluster of mobile nodes can communicate with each other without having any basic infrastructure. The basic characteristic of MANET is dynamic topology. Due to the dynamic behavior nature, the topology of the network changes very frequently, and this will lead to the failure of the valid route repeatedly. Thus, the process of finding the valid route leads to notable drop in the throughput of the network. To identify a new valid path to the targeted mobile node, available proactive routing protocols use simple broadcasting method known as simple flooding. The simple flooding method broadcasts the RREQ packet from the source to the rest of the nodes in mobile network. But the problem with this method is disproportionate repetitive retransmission of RREQ packet which could result in high contention on the available channel and packet collision due to extreme traffic in the network. A reasonable number of routing algorithms have been suggested for reducing the lethal impact of flooding the RREQ packets. However, most of the algorithms have resulted in considerable amount of complexity and deduce the throughput by depending on special hardware components and maintaining complex information which will be less frequently used. By considering routing complexity with the goal of increasing the throughput of the network, in this paper, we have introduced a new approach called Dynamic Probabilistic Route (DPR) discovery. The Node’s Forwarding Probability (NFP) is dynamically calculated by the DPR mobile nodes using Probability Function (PF) which depends on density of local neighbor nodes and the cumulative number of its broadcast covered neighbors

    Cloning and expression of S-Adenosyl Methionine Synthetase gene in recombinant E. coli strain for large scale production of SAMe

    S-Adenosyl Methionine (SAMe) Synthetase is an enzyme which catalyses the synthesis of S-Adenosyl Methionine using methionine and ATP. It is also known as AdoMet which is well known methyl donor, which modifies DNA, RNA, histones and other proteins, dictating replicational, transcriptional and translational fidelity, mismatch repair, chromatin modeling, epigenetic modifications and imprinting. The objective of the present work is to clone the SAMe Synthetase gene in recombinant E. coli strain in order to express, characterize and purify it for further synthesis of SAMe in a large scale fermentation. Expression was induced by 1 mM IPTG and expressed protein was characterized by SDS-PAGE. The recombinant E. coli cells were used for the production of SAMe through batch and fed batch fermentation operations. The produced SAMe was purified through paper chromatography in order to use it in our future studies

    Effect of double-side welding on the microstructural characteristics and mechanical performance of dissimilar AA6061-AA5052 aluminium alloys

    In this study, cold metal transfer (CMT) based double-side welding process was employed to weld AA5052-H32 and AA6061-T6 plates having a thickness of 6 mm. The microstructure and mechanical integrity of the weldment was examined systematically. Symmetric and defect free joint with full penetration was achieved. The multiple heating and cooling cycles during CMT welding did not affect the weldment while the microstructure comprised of columnar and equiaxed dendrites and the heat affected zone (HAZ) width was < 50 µm at all interfaces. Precipitates such as Al3Mg2, Mg2Si, and α-Al(FeMn)Si were observed in the fusion zone. Intergranular Al-Si eutectic structure along with few microliquefaction cracks were noticed in the α-Al matrix. The maximum tensile properties for double-side welded joint were 214 MPa and 12.30 % with a joint efficiency of 70.68 %. Tensile specimens underwent ductile fracture in the weaker AA5052-H32 side with confined plastic deformation

    Process-microstructural features for tailoring fatigue strength of wire arc additive manufactured functionally graded material of SS904L and Hastelloy C-276

    Many engineered components on subjecting to critical environments require properties that slightly differs with location in the fabricated part. The inadequate understanding of wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) process-microstructural features correlation brings interests on the structural reliability of functionally graded materials (FGM), which limits the extensive use of this cutting edge technology. Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) based WAAM process was adopted to fabricate the FGM of super austenitic stainless steel SS904L and Hastelloy C-276 with excellent bonding. The micrographs revealed that the WAAM processed FGM was mainly composed of columnar and equiaxed dendrites and had noticeable inhomogeneous features along the built direction. Tensile test results of sample along the built direction revealed a yield strength of 311.08 MPa and tensile strength of 680.73 MPa. Cyclic loading results depicted that the WAAM processed FGM has a fatigue resistance of 156 Mpa after sustaining 2 × 106 cycles. As a result of the varying microstructural characteristics along the built direction, the failure was initiated and fractured at the SS904L weaker region. © 2020 Elsevier B.V
