The pervasive deficit lens of multilingual language learners (MLLs) in U.S. education dehumanizes and fragments students in ways that disconnect them from their cultural and linguistic identities (CLI). MLLs are first and foremost humans with rich linguistic heritages, complex cultural backgrounds, and multiple and non-mainstream knowledges and ways of knowing (de los Ríos & Molina, 2020; Kasun, 2016). The deficit lens is a legacy of colonization that persists in our schools. Colonial education saw Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) transnationals as savage and backwards with cultures and languages that needed to be erased in order for them to assimilate into dominant, mainstream U.S. culture. These colonial legacies persist in our schools today. The intent of this critical ethnographic, arts-based, youth participatory action research (YPAR) study was to explore the experiences of MLLs as they learned about and made sense of their CLI in the context of a critical multimodal, multiliteracies, ethnic studies, arts-based summer collaborative called Nuestra Escuelita. The study was framed overall by a decolonizing framework through which the researcher sought to address the persisting colonial legacies in schools and their fragmenting and dehumanizing effects on MLL students. The participants were fourteen high school, bilingual, Latinx MLLs. The overarching assertion is that the students experienced a decolonial journey towards healing, wholeness, and humanity. Specifically, this journey is reflected in the four findings: 1) feeling connections of community and care; 2) reweaving the tapestries of their identities and heritage; 3) activating critical consciousness through historical learnings, shadow work and shifts toward power; and 4) feeling inspiration for change and imagining a decolonial vision for new educational futures. These findings represent the students’ experiences, and their journey mirrored the seven stages of Anzaldúa’s (2015) conocimiento. Implications include centering MLLs’ CLI in curriculum and the need for implementing ethnic studies programs for the New Latinx/Global South youth

Graceful Labeling for Step Grid Graph

We investigate a new graph which is called Step Grid Graph. We prove that the step grid graph is graceful. We have investigate some step grid graph related families of connected graceful graphs. We prove that path union of step grid graph, cycle of step grid graph and star of step grid graph are graceful graphs

Evaluating Practices for Teaching Civics Education in Adult ESL Classrooms

    Get PDF
Research has found that there is a strong relationship between civics education and civic engagement. Effective civics education instruction in adult ESL program not only teaches English language learners about the workings of the social and political institutions in the United States, but it also emphasizes the importance of community and civic engagement. However, there are no existing instructional standards for teaching civics education in adult ESL programs. This prompts the following research questions: Are adult ESL programs in North Carolina using effective practices for teaching civics education? How might these practices be improved? To answer the research questions, data from seven federally funded adult ESL programs were collected and used to determine if these programs are using practices based in research. After analyzing the data, policy recommendations suggest the creation of instructional standards that can improve civics education instruction in these programs.Bachelor of Art

Swift Search An open-source search engine

    Get PDF
Businesses nowadays collect a huge amount of information. To search classified data in an efficient and streamlined manner, every organization will require a Search Engine that can be integrated into their websites and search through their data. To increase the productivity of searching the content with a modern, flexible site search experience, we are proposing a Search Engine that can help the organization to search efficiently. In this paper, we propose Swift Search which is an open-source search engine, with no additional cost involved. The search time is tested on an open-source tool called Meilisearch, which gives a promising level of performance

Static Analysis of Electrostatically Actuated Micro Cantilever Beam

    Get PDF
AbstractElectrostatically actuated micro devices experience a fundamental limit on their stable travel range due to a phenomenon called as the pull-in Instability. Accurate determination of pull-in parameters (pull-in displacement and pull-in voltage) is vital in the design of electrostatic micro actuators. A systematic method of analysis of prismatic type of electrostatic beam is discussed in this paper. Using Galerkin method static analysis is carried out. Behaviour of interaction of nonlinear electrostatic force with linear restoring force of the micro cantilever beam is studied. Static analysis using COMSOL multiphysics finite element package is done to validate the results. The results are also compared with existing literature

Some results on graceful centers of Pn and related α-graceful graphs

In this paper, we have proved that the graph obtained by joining two copies of a bipartite graceful graph by an edge with any two corresponding vertices of both the copies of graphs is α-graceful. We also proved path step tree and path double step tree are α-graceful and the graph Pm × Pn × P2 is α-graceful. Graceful center of graceful graph defined. We also found some some graceful centers of path Pn. Acharya and Gill [1] proved Pn × Pm is α-graceful. In this paper we proved its generalized result.Publisher's Versio

Present paper aims to focus on absolute mean graceful labeling in path union of various graphs. We proved path union of graphs like tree, path Pn, cycle Cn, complete bipartite graph Km, n, grid graph PM × Pn, step grid graph Stn and double step grid graph DStn are absolute mean graceful graphs

Can One Teach Old Drugs New Tricks? Reformulating to Repurpose Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine

    Get PDF
The outbreak of the novel corona virus disease, COVID-19, has presented health care professionals with the unique challenges of trying to select appropriate pharmacological treatments with little time available for drug testing. Given the development times and manufacturing requirements for new products, Value Added Medicines (repurposing – reformulation of existing drugs) could be one possibility to beat the COVID-19 outbreak. This review explores reformulation alternatives which could be progressed with chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine; two antimalarial drugs, that are being tested on a global scale as a potential therapeutic option. The key areas for improvement have been reviewed and the potential solutions to the problems and limitations of current formulations are discussed. The pharmaceutical challenges discussed are those of highly soluble drugs, needed to be given at high doses and presenting a real bitter taste challenge with significant gastrointestinal side effects that could be translated and repurposed into fit for purpose reformulations
