    Adolescent problematic internet use and parental mediation: a Bangladeshi structured interview study

    Internet-related problems such as excessive internet use, problematic internet use (PIU), and internet addiction, are becoming increasingly studied among Bangladeshi adult students, but there has been little research among adolescents. In Bangladesh, there has been no research examining the role of parental mediation in their children's internet use. Therefore, the present structured interview study investigated Bangladeshi adolescent PIU and its associated socio-demographics, internet use behaviors, and the parental mediation role among 350 high school students residing in Dhaka. The results showed that 84 of adolescents (24.0%) were classified as having PIU (cut-off score of ≄ 50 on the Internet Addiction Test) and nine adolescents (2.6%) were classified as having a severe dependency on the internet (cut-off score of >80 on the Internet Addiction Test). According to hierarchical regression analysis, significant PIU correlates included lower academic results, both parents’ lower education, mother working outside the home, more than four days’ weekly internet use, more than two hours daily internet use, and active mediation. Additionally, internet use behaviors (i.e., internet use locations, devices, purposes, and applications) and parental internet mediation dimensions other than active mediation (i.e., restrictive mediation, active mediation internet safety, monitoring, and technical mediation) were significantly related to PIU in t-tests and correlation analysis respectively. However, they were non-significant in the hierarchical regression analysis when included into equation altogether. The present study's findings will be helpful in developing country-level policymaking decisions and facilitating future research in the country

    Glycerol Hypersensitivity in a Drosophila Model for Glycerol Kinase Deficiency Is Affected by Mutations in Eye Pigmentation Genes

    Glycerol kinase plays a critical role in metabolism by converting glycerol to glycerol 3-phosphate in an ATP dependent reaction. In humans, glycerol kinase deficiency results in a wide range of phenotypic variability; patients can have severe metabolic and CNS abnormalities, while others possess hyperglycerolemia and glyceroluria with no other apparent phenotype. In an effort to help understand the pathogenic mechanisms underlying the phenotypic variation, we have created a Drosophila model for glycerol kinase deficiency by RNAi targeting of dGyk (CG18374) and dGK (CG7995). As expected, RNAi flies have reduced glycerol kinase RNA expression, reduced phosphorylation activity and elevated glycerol levels. Further investigation revealed these flies to be hypersensitive to fly food supplemented with glycerol. Due to the hygroscopic nature of glycerol, we predict glycerol hypersensitivity is a result of greater susceptibility to desiccation, suggesting glycerol kinase to play an important role in desiccation resistance in insects. To evaluate a role for genetic modifier loci in determining severity of the glycerol hypersensitivity observed in knockdown flies, we performed a preliminary screen of lethal transposon insertion mutant flies using a glycerol hypersensitive survivorship assay. We demonstrate that this type of screen can identify both enhancer and suppressor genetic loci of glycerol hypersensitivity. Furthermore, we found that the glycerol hypersensitivity phenotype can be enhanced or suppressed by null mutations in eye pigmentation genes. Taken together, our data suggest proteins encoded by eye pigmentation genes play an important role in desiccation resistance and that eye pigmentation genes are strong modifiers of the glycerol hypersensitive phenotype identified in our Drosophila model for glycerol kinase deficiency

    New high statistics measurement of Ke4K_{e4} decay form factors and ππ\pi\pi scattering phase shifts

    We report results from a new measurement of the Ke4K_{e4} decay K±→π+π−e±ΜK^{\pm} \rightarrow \pi^{+}\pi^{-}e^{\pm}\nu by the NA48/2 collaboration at the CERN SPS, based on a partial sample of more than 670000 Ke4K_{e4} decays in both charged modes collected in 2003. The form factors of the hadronic current (F, G, H) and ππ\pi\pi phase difference (ÎŽ=ÎŽs−ήp\delta=\delta_{s}-\delta_{p}) have been measured in ten independent bins of the ππ\pi\pi mass spectrum to investigate the variation. A sizeable acceptance at large ππ\pi\pi mass, a low background and a very good resolution contribute to an improved experimental accuracy, a factor two better than in the previous measurement, when extracting the ππ\pi\pi scattering lengths a00a^{0}_{0} and a02a^{2}_{0}. Under the assumption of isospin symmetry and using numerical solutions of the Roy equations, the following values are obtained in the plane (a00,a02):a00=0.233±0.016stat±0.007syst,a02=−0.0471±0.011stat±0.004systa^{0}_{0}, a^{2}_{0}): a^{0}_{0}=0.233 \pm 0.016_{stat} \pm 0.007_{syst}, a^{2}_{0}=-0.0471 \pm 0.011_{stat} \pm 0.004_{syst}. The presence of potentially large isospin effects is also considered and will allow comparison with precise predictions from Chiral Perturbation Theory

    A measurement of the direct CP violating charge asymmetries of the Dalitz plot linear slopes Ag=(g+−g−)/(g++g−)A_g=(g^+-g^-)/(g^++g^-) in K±→π±π+π−K^\pm\to\pi^\pm\pi^+\pi^- and K±→π±π0π0K^\pm\to\pi^\pm\pi^0\pi^0 decays by the NA48/2 experiment at CERN SPS is presented. A new technique of asymmetry measurement involving simultaneous K+K^+ and K−K^- beams and a large data sample collected allowed a result of an unprecedented precision. The charge asymmetries were measured to be Agc=(−1.5±2.2)×10−4A^c_g=(-1.5\pm2.2)\times10^{-4} with 3.11×1093.11\times 10^9 K±→π±π+π−K^{\pm}\to\pi^\pm\pi^+\pi^- decays, and Agn=(1.8±1.8)×10−4A^n_g=(1.8\pm1.8)\times10^{-4} with 9.13×1079.13\times 10^7 K±→π±π0π0K^{\pm}\to\pi^\pm\pi^0\pi^0 decays.     EU Kids Online has spent seven years investigating 9-16 year olds’ engagement with the internet, focusing on the benefits and risks of children’s internet use. While this meant examining the experiences of much younger children than had been researched before EU Kids Online began its work in 2006, there is now a critical need for information about the internet-related behaviours of 0-8 year olds.
