The estimation of hydrologie balance is useful in order to assess the safe yield of the aquifer systems and therefore to establish their rational exploitation and sustainable management. Over-abstractions of groundwater in Aposelemis basin resulted in a severe disequilibrium of its water balance. In order to overcome this disequilibrium we studied the hydrological balance in the wider area ofDikti mountain which comprises the drainage basins of Aposelemis river, ofLasithi and Katharo plateaus and of the rest of the drainage area of Dikti. The data used are the monthly values of Aposelemis runoff in the gauge station at Potamies and rainfall data for the period 1967-2003 from seven stations located within or in the close vicinity of the drainage basin of Aposelemis. Using ArcView GIS, the hydrological basin of Aposelemis river and the drainage area ofDikti were delineated, based on the digital elevation model (DEM). The actual évapotranspiration was estimated by the Thornthwaite method. A high inter-relationship exists between the flow of the Aposelemis river and rainfall outside the conventional boundaries of the Aposelemis basin. A significant portion of the annual rainfall, in that wider area is not only recharging the karst systems downstream but also contributing to the flow of Aposelemis river. Karst aquifer systems are partially drained by large coastal and submarine brackish springs and by inland freshwater springs. Finally, tracer studies carried out by IGME confirmed the hydraulic connection between Lasithiplateau and downstream aquifer systems

Aspects and challenges of mashup creator design

With the advent of Web 2.0, an increasing number of web sites has started offering their data over the web in standard formats and exposed their functionality as APIs. A new type of applications has taken advantage of the new data and services available by mixing them, in order to generate new applications fast and efficiently, getting its name from its own architectural style: mashups. A set of applications that aims to help a user create, deploy and manage his mashups has also emerged, using various approaches. In this paper we discuss the key factors that should be taken into consideration when designing a mashup creator, along with the most important challenges that offer a field for research.Comment: 5 pages, 14th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics (PCI2010), September 10-12 2010, Tripoli, Greec

The development of septic ascending pylephlebitis secondary to gangrenous appendicitis resulting in the development of liver abscess is a rare complication especially in infancy. In this study we refer to an infant 11 months old with the above clinical entity treated successfully in our clinic. Due to this rare occasion, we reviewed recent literature, aiming at the consolidation of clinical and prognostic parameters

Mechanisms, Risk Factors, and Management of Acquired Long QT Syndrome: A Comprehensive Review

    Get PDF
Long QT syndrome is characterized by prolongation of the corrected QT (QTc) interval on the surface electrocardiogram and is associated with precipitation of torsade de pointes (TdP), a polymorphic ventricular tachycardia that may cause sudden death. Acquired long QT syndrome describes pathologic excessive prolongation of the QT interval, upon exposure to an environmental stressor, with reversion back to normal following removal of the stressor. The most common environmental stressor in acquired long QT syndrome is drug therapy. Acquired long QT syndrome is an important issue for clinicians and a significant public health problem concerning the large number of drugs with this adverse effect with a potentially fatal outcome, the large number of patients exposed to these drugs, and our inability to predict the risk for a given individual. In this paper, we focus on mechanisms underlying QT prolongation, risk factors for torsades de pointes and describe the short- and long-term treatment of acquired long QT syndrome

Objective: This study investigated symptoms of anxiety and depression in relatives of patients admitted in the Intensive Care Unit and determined whether these symptoms were associated to the seriousness of the patients’ condition.Metodology: A total of 102 patients’ relatives were surveyedduring the study. They were given a self-report questionnaire in order to assess demographic data, anxiety and depression symptoms. The symptoms of anxiety and depression were evaluated with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (hads). Patient’s condition was evaluated with a.p.a.ch.e ii Score. Results: More than 60% of patients’ relatives presented severe symptoms of anxiety and depression. No relation was found between symptoms of anxiety and depression of the relatives of patients and patients’ condition of health. On thecontrary, these feelings used to exist regardless of the seriousness of patient’s condition. Conclusions: The assessment of these patients is recommended in order serious problems of anxietyand depression to be prevented.
