Health Implications in Regards to the Changing Nature of Work

    Get PDF
This theoretical paper is relevant to nontraditional workers, traditional employees, and businesses searching for ways to enhance workers’ health and well-being. Businesses should also find this information helpful if they are aiming to increase their bottom line. The changing nature of work has health implications for both nontraditional workers and traditional employees; however, it has not been readily studied. I review the current literature available and analyze the health implications for both nontraditional workers and traditional employees. After reviewing a variety of literature I propose two theoretical propositions. My first proposition is that the changing nature of work, specifically the increase of workplace flexibility, benefits traditional employees more so than nontraditional workers. Secondly, I propose that nontraditional workers are likely to endure more of the negative health implications in response to the changing nature of work when compared to traditional employees. Ultimately, there needs to be further research done on comparing traditional employees to nontraditional workers and further investigation on what kind of health implications we should expect from the changing nature of work. From reviewing and discussing the negative health implications, it becomes evident that businesses need to focus on enhancing the health and well-being of all workers. I conclude by suggesting ways in which businesses can achieve a happier and healthier workforce

We derive sharp Sobolev inequalities for Sobolev spaces on metric spaces. In particular, we obtain new sharp Sobolev embeddings and Faber-Krahn estimates for H\"{o}rmander vector fields

Fate of the cluster state on the square lattice in a magnetic field

The cluster state represents a highly entangled state which is one central object for measurement-based quantum computing. Here we study the robustness of the cluster state on the two-dimensional square lattice at zero temperature in the presence of external magnetic fields by means of different types of high-order series expansions and variational techniques using infinite Projected Entangled Pair States (iPEPS). The phase diagram displays a first-order phase transition line ending in two critical end points. Furthermore, it contains a characteristic self-dual line in parameter space allowing many precise statements. The self-duality is shown to exist on any lattice topology.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figure

College Students’ Personality Traits in Relation to Career Readiness

    Get PDF
This study examined sixty-one Gettysburg College juniors and seniors (31 males, 30 females) to measure how the Big Five personality traits, and whether a student has Type D characteristics, determines if a student is career ready. We collected data through an in-person survey, with questions about personality traits, ambition, career readiness, and demographics. Regression was used to statistically analyze our first hypothesis. The results found that there is a significant positive association between conscientiousness and career readiness, but there is no significant association between extraversion and career readiness. For the second hypothesis, a mediation model was used. We found that ambition is not a mediator between Type D personality characteristics and career readiness. However, there is a significant positive association between Type D personality traits and career readiness. We explored whether gender plays a role in ambition responses. We concluded that there were no significant differences between males and females

Bounds on universal quantum computation with perturbed 2d cluster states

Motivated by the possibility of universal quantum computation under noise perturbations, we compute the phase diagram of the 2d cluster state Hamiltonian in the presence of Ising terms and magnetic fields. Unlike in previous analysis of perturbed 2d cluster states, we find strong evidence of a very well defined cluster phase, separated from a polarized phase by a line of 1st and 2nd order transitions compatible with the 3d Ising universality class and a tricritical end point. The phase boundary sets an upper bound for the amount of perturbation in the system so that its ground state is still useful for measurement-based quantum computation purposes. Moreover, we also compute the local fidelity with the unperturbed 2d cluster state. Besides a classical approximation, we determine the phase diagram by combining series expansions and variational infinite Projected entangled-Pair States (iPEPS) methods. Our work constitutes the first analysis of the non-trivial effect of few-body perturbations in the 2d cluster state, which is of relevance for experimental proposals.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, revised version, to appear in PR

Young People\u27s Experiences of Crime: an Investigation into the Victimisation and Offending of Inner-City Dublin Youth

    Get PDF
This project is one of the first empirical investigations into youth victimisation and offending in Ireland and is one of three research projects that were established under the Youth Crime Research Project: Young People’s Experiences of Crime. Victim surveys are of particular interest to this study, as they help to illuminate the \u27dark figure\u27 of crime through ascertaining individual\u27s experiences of victimisation, while simultaneously collecting pertinent information regarding their own level of criminality. A common failure among the majority of victim surveys, however, is that they do not investigate the experiences of young people. This project seeks to address this deficiency. Through the use of a victim survey, structural equation models, and focus groups, this research will also analyse the extent and nature of youth victimisation and offending in inner-city Dublin, possible correlations between victimisation and offending behaviour, the role parental supervision and routine activities/lifestyle choices play in determining the risk of victimisation and offending, and the role gender plays in young people’s experiences of crime. Previous research has shown that victimisation is a strong indicator of likely participation in delinquent behaviour. However, many young people have been victimised, yet do not pursue a delinquent lifestyle as a result, suggesting a strong similarity between victimogenic and criminogenic risk factors, such as age and environment. The control that guardians exert over youth is also paramount in determining what type of lifestyle youth can pursue in the first place. As youth cannot be supervised at all times, the lifestyle choices they make regardless of parental influence, will also be investigated. Finally, this research aims to be instrumental in the future development of a nationwide survey of youth experiences of crime in Ireland.

The potential of rhizobacteria as plant growth promoters in increasing crop production in saline soils continues to be carried out by exploring the types of isolates from the rhizosphere of saline soils.  The purpose of this study was to obtain the types of isolates that have the potential to be developed as biofertilizers in saline soils.  The research was conducted by isolating rhizosphere soil from saline soil and then testing the ability of the resulting isolates to produce phytohormones in the form of IAA, the ability to dissolve phosphate, the ability to fix nitrogen and the ability to produce the enzyme ACC deaminase. The results showed that isolates KNW 2.1, KNW 2.2, KNW 2.3 and KNW 3.2 have potential as rhizobacteria that promote plant growth in saline soils as indicated by their ability to produce the hormone IAA, the ability to dissolve phosphate, the ability to fix nitrogen, and the ability to produce the enzyme ACC deaminase which is higher than the other isolates.   &nbsp

Mengimplementasikan Pelayanan Yesus dalam Konteks Misi Masa Kini Menurut Injil Sinoptik

    Get PDF
