    A simplified binary artificial fish swarm algorithm for 0–1 quadratic knapsack problems

    Available online 8 October 2013.This paper proposes a simplified binary version of the artificial fish swarm algorithm (S-bAFSA) for solving 0–1 knapsack problems. This is a combinatorial optimization problem, which arises in many fields of optimization. In S-bAFSA, trial points are created by using crossover and mutation. In order to make the points feasible, a random heuristic drop item procedure is used. The heuristic add item is also implemented to improve the quality of the solutions, and a cyclic reinitialization of the population is carried out to avoid convergence to non-optimal solutions. To enhance the accuracy of the solution, a local search is applied on a predefined number of points.     Nonlinear continuous global optimization by modified differential evolution

    The task of global optimization is to find a point where the objective function obtains its most extreme value. Differential evolution (DE) is a population-based heuristic approach that creates new candidate solutions by combining several points of the same population. The algorithm has three parameters: amplification factor of the differential variation, crossover control parameter and population size. It is reported that DE is sensitive to the choice of these parameters. To improve the quality of the solution, in this paper, we propose a modified differential evolution introducing self-adaptive parameters, modified mutation and the inversion operator.     Uncapacitated facility location problem (UFLP) is a combinatorial optimization problem, which has many applications.     Collaborative disaster management system - An exploratory for landslide in Malaysia

    A disaster management system has active, unpredictable, and complex characteristics due to dynamic conditions with a high level of uncertainty. Non-Government Organizations (NGO)and Government organizations from different jurisdictions and sectors with different responsibilities at regular times create an emergent and complex system in response to disasters. Although being mostly demanded, the collaboration initiatives between government agencies that specifically designed to address risk management before a disaster happens is lacking in effectiveness. In the Malaysian perspective, there are organizations, such as the Public Works Department (PWD), Department of Mineral and Geosciences (DMG) and Centre of Remote Sensing (MACRES)that are involved in mitigation and preparedness of landslides disasters, but results are not encouraging due to the need of effective collaboration among these organizations. It is natural for humans to collaborate while dealing with complex problems. In this regard, we consider this process of effective collaboration in the context of information systems. Investment in the information technologies and systems, and its utilization can play a critical role in creating a complex socio-technical disaster system to coordinate organizations and jurisdictions in dynamic settings. We propose a simple model for collaboration that helps us to realize a successful risk management in disasters.     Combining Ability of Pod Yield and Related Traits of Groundnut ( Arachis hypogaea

    A study was performed using 6×6 F1 diallel population without reciprocals to assess the mode of inheritance of pod yield and related traits in groundnut with imposed salinity stress. Heterosis was found for pod number and yield. Data on general and specific combining ability (gca and sca) indicated additive and nonadditive gene actions. The gca: sca ratios were much less than unity suggesting predominant role of nonadditive gene effects. Cultivars “Binachinabadam-2” and “Dacca-1” and mutant M6/25/64-82 had the highest, second highest, and third highest pod number, as well as gca values, respectively. These two cultivars and another mutant M6/15/70-19 also had the highest, second highest, and third highest pod yield, as well as gca values, respectively. Therefore, “Dacca-1”, “Binachinabadam-2”, M6/25/64-82, and M6/15/70-19 could be used as source of salinity tolerance. Cross combinations showing high sca effects arising from parents with high and low gca values for any trait indicate the influence of nonadditive genes on their expression. Parents of these crosses can be used for biparental mating or reciprocal recurrent selection for developing high yielding varieties. Crosses with high sca effects having both parents with good gca effects could be exploited by pedigree breeding to get transgressive segregants

    On Challenging Techniques for Constrained Global Optimization

    This chapter aims to address the challenging and demanding issue of solving a continuous nonlinear constrained global optimization problem. We propose four stochastic methods that rely on a population of points to diversify the search for a global solution: genetic algorithm, differential evolution, artificial fish swarm algorithm and electromagnetism-like mechanism. The performance of different variants of these algorithms is analyzed using a benchmark set of problems. Three different strategies to handle the equality and inequality constraints of the problem are addressed. An augmented Lagrangian-based technique, the tournament selection based on feasibility and dominance rules, and a strategy based on ranking objective and constraint violation are presented and tested. Numerical experiments are reported showing the effectiveness of our suggestions.     Local flap for reconstruction of nasal defect following excision of basal cell carcinoma of nose

    Reconstruction of soft tissue at the nose following excision of basal cell carcinoma is always challenging, because of both functional and aesthetic importance of nose. The local flap is always preferable to skin graft as this produces like with like replacement, pliable cover and vascularized tissue over the skeletal framework. In this paper, we discussed six cases of nasal reconstruction with bilobed flap, forehead flap, and nasolabial flap. All flaps survived and the patients had satisfactory outcome

    Synthesis and characterization of orotic acid loaded chitosan inclusion complex

    The current study aims to improve drug release properties of orotic acid loaded with chitosan inclusion complex (OA/CS). The OA/CS inclusion complex was synthesized using the freeze-drying technique. The characterization of inclusion OA/ CS was carried out using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), zeta sizer, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, the size of OA/CS ranged between 58 nm and 200 nm, and the zeta potential was 30 mV.
