    Get PDF
A study was performed using 6×6 F1 diallel population without reciprocals to assess the mode of inheritance of pod yield and related traits in groundnut with imposed salinity stress. Heterosis was found for pod number and yield. Data on general and specific combining ability (gca and sca) indicated additive and nonadditive gene actions. The gca: sca ratios were much less than unity suggesting predominant role of nonadditive gene effects. Cultivars “Binachinabadam-2” and “Dacca-1” and mutant M6/25/64-82 had the highest, second highest, and third highest pod number, as well as gca values, respectively. These two cultivars and another mutant M6/15/70-19 also had the highest, second highest, and third highest pod yield, as well as gca values, respectively. Therefore, “Dacca-1”, “Binachinabadam-2”, M6/25/64-82, and M6/15/70-19 could be used as source of salinity tolerance. Cross combinations showing high sca effects arising from parents with high and low gca values for any trait indicate the influence of nonadditive genes on their expression. Parents of these crosses can be used for biparental mating or reciprocal recurrent selection for developing high yielding varieties. Crosses with high sca effects having both parents with good gca effects could be exploited by pedigree breeding to get transgressive segregants

Greenhouse gas emitted by the transport sector around the world is a serious issue of concern. To minimize such emission the automobile engineers have been working relentlessly. Researchers have been trying hard to switch fossil fuel to alternative fuels and attempting to various driving strategies to make traffic flow smooth and to reduce traffic congestion and emission of greenhouse gas. Automobile emits a massive amount of pollutants such as Carbon Monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), carbon dioxide (CO2), particulate matter (PM), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Intelligent transport system (ITS) technologies can be implemented to lower pollutant emissions and reduction of fuel consumption. This paper investigates the ITS techniques and technologies for the reduction of fuel consumption and minimization of the exhaust pollutant. It highlights the environmental impact of the ITS application to provide the state-of-art green solution. A case study also advocates that ITS technology reduces fuel consumption and exhaust pollutant in the urban environment

Reconstruction of soft tissue at the nose following excision of basal cell carcinoma is always challenging, because of both functional and aesthetic importance of nose. The local flap is always preferable to skin graft as this produces like with like replacement, pliable cover and vascularized tissue over the skeletal framework. In this paper, we discussed six cases of nasal reconstruction with bilobed flap, forehead flap, and nasolabial flap. All flaps survived and the patients had satisfactory outcome

Numerical investigation of heat transfer enhancement of nanofluids in an inclined lid-driven triangular enclosure.

    Get PDF
The behavior of nanofluids is investigated numerically in an inclined lid-driven triangular enclosure to gain insight into convective recirculation and flow processes induced by a nanofluid. The present model is developed to examine the behavior of nanofluids taking into account the solid volume fraction δ. Fluid mechanics and conjugate heat transfer, described in terms of continuity, linear momentum and energy equations, were predicted by using the Galerkin finite element method. Comparisons with previously published work on the basis of special cases are performed and found to be in excellent agreement. Numerical results are obtained for a wide range of parameters such as the Richardson number, and solid volume fraction. Copper–water nanofluids are used with Prandtl number, Pr = 6.2 and solid volume fraction δ is varied as 0%, 4%, 8% and 10%. The streamlines, isotherm plots and the variation of the average Nusselt number at the hot surface as well as average fluid temperature in the enclosure are presented and discussed in detailed. It is observed that solid volume fraction strongly influenced the fluid flow and heat transfer in the enclosure at the three convective regimes. Moreover, the variation of the average Nusselt number and average fluid temperature in the cavity is linear with the solid volume fraction

Nonlinear continuous global optimization by modified differential evolution

    Get PDF
The task of global optimization is to find a point where the objective function obtains its most extreme value. Differential evolution (DE) is a population-based heuristic approach that creates new candidate solutions by combining several points of the same population. The algorithm has three parameters: amplification factor of the differential variation, crossover control parameter and population size. It is reported that DE is sensitive to the choice of these parameters. To improve the quality of the solution, in this paper, we propose a modified differential evolution introducing self-adaptive parameters, modified mutation and the inversion operator. We test our method with a set of nonlinear continuous optimization problems with simple bounds.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

A simplified binary artificial fish swarm algorithm for 0–1 quadratic knapsack problems

Available online 8 October 2013.This paper proposes a simplified binary version of the artificial fish swarm algorithm (S-bAFSA) for solving 0–1 knapsack problems. This is a combinatorial optimization problem, which arises in many fields of optimization. In S-bAFSA, trial points are created by using crossover and mutation. In order to make the points feasible, a random heuristic drop item procedure is used. The heuristic add item is also implemented to improve the quality of the solutions, and a cyclic reinitialization of the population is carried out to avoid convergence to non-optimal solutions. To enhance the accuracy of the solution, a local search is applied on a predefined number of points. The method is tested on a set of benchmark 0–1 knapsack problems.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

Uncapacitated facility location problem (UFLP) is a combinatorial optimization problem, which has many applications. The artificial fish swarm algorithm has recently emerged in continuous optimization problem. In this paper, we present a simplified binary version of the artificial fish swarm algorithm (S-bAFSA) for solving the UFLP. In S-bAFSA, trial points are created by using crossover and mutation. In order to improve the quality of the solutions, a cyclic reinitialization of the population is carried out. To enhance the accuracy of the solution, a local search is applied on a predefined number of points. On Challenging Techniques for Constrained Global Optimization

    Get PDF
This chapter aims to address the challenging and demanding issue of solving a continuous nonlinear constrained global optimization problem. We propose four stochastic methods that rely on a population of points to diversify the search for a global solution: genetic algorithm, differential evolution, artificial fish swarm algorithm and electromagnetism-like mechanism. The performance of different variants of these algorithms is analyzed using a benchmark set of problems. Three different strategies to handle the equality and inequality constraints of the problem are addressed. An augmented Lagrangian-based technique, the tournament selection based on feasibility and dominance rules, and a strategy based on ranking objective and constraint violation are presented and tested. Numerical experiments are reported showing the effectiveness of our suggestions. Two well-known engineering design problems are successfully solved by the proposed methods. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Foundation for Science and Technology), Portugal for the financial support under fellowship grant: C2007-UMINHO-ALGORITMI-04. Use of quantitative molecular diagnostic methods to assess the aetiology, burden, and clinical characteristics of diarrhoea in children in low-resource settings: A reanalysis of the MAL-ED cohort study

    Get PDF
Background: Optimum management of childhood diarrhoea in low-resource settings has been hampered by insufficient data on aetiology, burden, and associated clinical characteristics. We used quantitative diagnostic methods to reassess and refine estimates of diarrhoea aetiology from the Etiology, Risk Factors, and Interactions of Enteric Infections and Malnutrition and the Consequences for Child Health and Development (MAL-ED) cohort study. Methods: We re-analysed stool specimens from the multisite MAL-ED cohort study of children aged 0–2 years done at eight locations (Dhaka, Bangladesh; Vellore, India; Bhaktapur, Nepal; Naushero Feroze, Pakistan; Venda, South Africa; Haydom, Tanzania; Fortaleza, Brazil; and Loreto, Peru), which included active surveillance for diarrhoea and routine non-diarrhoeal stool collection. We used quantitative PCR to test for 29 enteropathogens, calculated population-level pathogen-specific attributable burdens, derived stringent quantitative cutoffs to identify aetiology for individual episodes, and created aetiology prediction scores using clinical characteristics.Findings: We analysed 6625 diarrhoeal and 30 968 non-diarrhoeal surveillance stools from 1715 children. Overall, 64·9% of diarrhoea episodes (95% CI 62·6–71·2) could be attributed to an aetiology by quantitative PCR compared with 32·8% (30·8–38·7) using the original study microbiology. Viral diarrhoea (36·4% of overall incidence, 95% CI 33·6–39·5) was more common than bacterial (25·0%, 23·4–28·4) and parasitic diarrhoea (3·5%, 3·0–5·2). Ten pathogens accounted for 95·7% of attributable diarrhoea: Shigella (26·1 attributable episodes per 100 child-years, 95% CI 23·8–29·9), sapovirus (22·8, 18·9–27·5), rotavirus (20·7, 18·8–23·0), adenovirus 40/41 (19·0, 16·8–23·0), enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (18·8, 16·5–23·8), norovirus (15·4, 13·5–20·1), astrovirus (15·0, 12·0–19·5), Campylobacter jejuni or C coli (12·1, 8·5–17·2), Cryptosporidium (5·8, 4·3–8·3), and typical enteropathogenic E coli (5·4, 2·8–9·3). 86·2% of the attributable incidence for Shigella was non-dysenteric. A prediction score for shigellosis was more accurate (sensitivity 50·4% [95% CI 46·7–54·1], specificity 84·0% [83·0–84·9]) than current guidelines, which recommend treatment only of bloody diarrhoea to cover Shigella (sensitivity 14·5% [95% CI 12·1–17·3], specificity 96·5% [96·0–97·0]).Interpretation: Quantitative molecular diagnostics improved estimates of pathogen-specific burdens of childhood diarrhoea in the community setting. Viral causes predominated, including a substantial burden of sapovirus; however, Shigella had the highest overall burden with a high incidence in the second year of life. These data could improve the management of diarrhoea in these low-resource settings
