    Get PDF

    Get PDF
The article centers around the debate between defenders of "heavy Catalan" vs. those who advocate "light Catalan" which was initiated by the book Verinosa llengua (‘Venomous language’) published in 1986 by Xavier Pericay and Ferran Toutain, in which the authors argue against traditional literary Catalan (= heavy) and in favour of a formal variety that allows more convergence with Castilian (= light). The debate is presented as an example of lay linguistics and a number of manuals directed towards a lay public are analysed as to their stance in the light/heavy debate.

Description of the model of linguistic architecture in the Catalonian regions in the 18th and 19th centuries. The author develops the conceptual pair genolect, or transmitted language/gramolect, or referential learned language, and applies it to the academic speech of 1780, in which a scholar from Puigcerdà presents the linguistic ideas and attitudes of his lime in Castilian. The analysis of the text, collated with other sources, allows the indentification of a five-gramolect concurrence (Latin, literary Catalan, literary CastiHan, regional Castilian, and aspoken Catalan influenced by Castilian), each struggling for hegemony in a speech-fragmented community with a heterogenous genolectal reality

Pluricentric communication beyond the standard language paradigm: perceptions of linguistic accommodation between speakers from Argentina and Spain in a mobility context

Globalisation and late-modernity have brought profound socio-political, economic, cultural as well as linguistic transformations. An intensification of mobility and transnational migration around the globe has added a complexity to linguistic interactions and repertoires that can be better analysed with non-essentialist approaches. With this in mind, the aim of this article is to expand the research agenda on pluricentricity beyond the standard language paradigm, which is based on the western conceptualisation of languages as clearly definable and discrete entities. In this respect, we address pluricentricity from the speaker’s perspective as opposed to the traditional perspective focused on standard-setting centres and peripheries. In this article, we adopt a communicative-based perspective on pluricentricity and focus on the potential accommodation behaviour of Spanish speakers from Argentina and Spain in mobility contexts. We conducted 39 semi-structured interviews to access perceptions and attitudes regarding the possible negotiations of short-term convergent norms and the creation of a spontaneous translanguaging space. We assume that awareness of one’s own repertoire as well as tolerance towards the perceived markers of the respective interlocutors’ repertoire are necessary conditions for successful pluricentric communication
