Influence of TIMSS research on the mathematics curriculum in Serbia: educational standards in primary education
Since 1995, achievements in mathematics and science have been assessed worldwide every four years by TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study), whose outcomes have influenced the development and (re)design of mathematics and science education curricula in a number of countries. This paper examines how TIMSS has influenced changes in the mathematics curriculum in Serbia in primary education. The paper first briefly presents TIMSS results of Serbian students that call for curricular improvements. It then gives a summary of these changes regarding educational standards for the end of primary education. The paper ends with a critical examination of these standards and suggestions for their enhancement
Newer Serbian architecture and its audience
O tome slikovito svedoÄi danaÅ”nji arhitektonski lik konstantno uveÄavane prestonice i drugih gradova, uprkos stalnim pokuÅ”ajima politiÄkih elita da ga kontroliÅ”u i instrumentalizuju u poželjnom smeru. Iako pod pritiskom oficijelnih krugova koji nisu uvek raspolagali potrebnim kulturnim rafinmanom, graÄenje sa umetniÄkim ambicijama se održalo, kvantitativno i kvalitativno razvijalo, metodoloÅ”ki raslojavalo i profilisalo. Doseglo je i visoke, autorski prepoznatljive domete i meÄunarodno primeÄene opuse. DosadaÅ”nja iskustva pokazuju da se znaÄajni objekti novije srpske arhitekture podvrgavaju specifiÄnim merilima vrednovanja unutar lanca prosuditelja koji Äine predstavnici razliÄitih slojeva kulturne javnosti - od laika, do struÄnjaka i nauÄnika. This review article retrospectively considers the main directions of development of Serbian architecture from the beginning of the 18th until the end of 20th century. How they were perceived socially is also taken into account. Initial, notional, technical, semiotic and stylistic properties of buildings on all territories where Serbs lived are questioned. New Serbian architecture is also presented, with the main authorial opuses and key works of individual periods pointed out. It is concluded that in the long term process of permanent Europeanization and modernization of Serbian society, generations of active builders gave a big contribution to the civilization. Experiences show that significant objects of newer Serbian architecture are subjected to specific measures of evaluation by a number of judges composed by the representatives from different strata of the cultured public - from laymen to experts and scientists
Expressionism and Serbian industrial architecture
Inovativnoj stilistici i zavodljivoj simbolici tog pravca jednako su naginjali vodeÄi, koliko i manje poznati srpski graditelji, Äije stvaralaÅ”tvo u domenu industrijske arhitekture nije dovoljno prouÄeno. Otud se temeljito evidentiranje preostalih primera nameÄe kao važna tema buduÄih istoriografskih po du hvata. As the original movement in European Avant-garde architecture, Expressionism expanded in Serbian inter-war construction industry with reflections even after 1945. Unlike its representation in profane, sacral, and memorial structures, its manifestations in industrial architecture have not been thoroughly considered in their historical sense, even though it provoked innovative compositional solutions. Here we will analyze the expressionistic elements in industrial structures of leading Serbian architects of the post-war period and the period between two wars
Architectural Opus of Momir KorunoviÄ in Dalmatia and Kvarner (1928-1939)
As a state architect in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (since 1929 the Kingdom of Yugoslavia), who built about ninety buildings of various purposes on the territory, Momir KorunoviÄ (1883-1969) has left a tangible creative mark in Croatia. Besides one built and one unstructured Orthodox Church in continental Croatia, he designed four public buildings on the Adriatic coast, in the areas that belonged to the Savska and Primorska Banovina, out of which two were realized. Modestly adjusted to the architectural tradition and climate, his works in the Adriatic area did not differ significantly from the work he completed in other parts of the multinational state. Anti-modern and conservative, they contain elements of the Yugoslav unitary style (projects of the Main Post Office in Split and Student Dormitory in Å ibenik), and the national style of the Orthodox churches on Vis and SuÅ”ak. For a more significant architectural result on the Croatian Adriatic coast, KorunoviÄ obviously needed to go one step further and more fully adapt to local conditions and cultural tradition. However, he was not ready for that, because in his creative consciousness he fixed a conservative matrix of neo-medieval style in the early twenties and enriched with deposits of post-secession and expressionism, which from 1928-1929 affected the promotion of integral Yugoslav ideology
Participation in online cooperative professional development: Factors to consider and activities to practice
This study deals with relevant components of a technology innovation framework suitable for the examination of online collaborative professional development. By using a sample of 55 lower-secondary mathematics teachers and 155 primary school teachers, this study examined the relationships among teachers' intention to participate in online collaborative professional development (OCPD), their perspective taking, and their computer self-concept. It was found that while this intention was positively related to computer self-concept, perspective taking could positively relate to this intention only indirectly through computer self-concept. It was also found that, among three OCPD activities used to describe the intention, the activity of cooperatively analyzing videos of lessons given was preferred least by all these teachers. Implications for research are also included
Data modelling using interactive charts
This paper examines data modelling with interactive charts in upper secondary education. After defining data modelling per se and explaining its relationship to mathematical modelling, data modelling with interactive charts is examined in detail, focusing on the main challenges in using them in the context of key data modelling activities. This examination is followed by a report of an empirical pilot study on the difficulty of these activities and the importance of this kind of modelling for upper secondary education. Implications for practice and research are included
Relating procedural and conceptual knowledge
Relating procedural and conceptual mathematical knowledge is a very important educational goal that is difficult to attain. However, research has evidenced that some progress towards achieving this goal can be made. This contribution briefly reviews some of the main outcomes of research in this area, focusing on relating these knowledge types with technology, particularly that based upon a computer algebra system
Data science for novice students: A didactic approach to data mining using neural networks
This paper presents a way to introduce data science to college (business) students. To this end, data mining using neural networks may be practiced. After briefly clarifying the main differences between data science and data mining, the work with neural networks is examined in detail. The examination deals with the features and affordances of this work, as well as its expected challenges with possible reasons. The paper ends with a number of implications for practice, teacher education, and research
Modern statistical literacy, data science, dashboards, and automated analytics and its applications
With regard to the internationalization of statistics education, this paper considers first a global context concerning modern statistical literacy, data science, and dashboards. Then, it examines data discovery using automated analytics, whereby data insights may be indicated by suitable signals generated by the computer environment used. This theoretical paper, directed towards statistics educators, as well as other educators in relevant high school subjects, should make them (more) aware of this context and such analytics, supporting them to identify issues that need be considered in their teaching (and research) in order to have their students better prepared for the jobs of tomorrow
Islamic Architecture and Art in Croatia; Ottoman and Contemporary Heritage; Zlatko KaraÄ, Alen ŽuniÄ
The book presents the valuable Islamic built heritage in Croatia that has remained relatively unknown so far. It has been thoroughly researched and interpreted here both in the historical context of the Ottoman monuments from the 16th
and 17th centuries and in the context of Modernism and contemporary Islamic architecture of the 20th and 21st
centuries. The reason why the Islamic heritage in Croatia has remained unknown until today lies in a systematic and thorough destruction of Turkish monuments in the early years of Christian reconquista in the late 17th century as well as in the ideological and religious antagonism in the past which resulted in the destruction of the remaining material traces. Croatia shows clear evidence of the westernmost expansion of the Ottoman-Islamic heritage but at the same time it is the area where Islamic visual art came into contact and sometimes even overlapped with the Western Renaissance āfrom the other side of the borderā. This research into the modern and contemporary mosques in Croatia has revealed a series of unknown projects attributed to the relevant Modernist authors
