    Daydreaming factories

    Optimisation of factories, a cornerstone of production engineering for the past half century, relies on formulating the challenges with limited degrees of freedom. In this paper, technological advances are reviewed to propose a “daydreaming” framework for factories that use their cognitive capacity for looking into the future or “foresighting”. Assessing and learning from the possible eventualities enable breakthroughs with many degrees of freedom and make daydreaming factories antifragile. In these factories with augmented and reciprocal learning and foresighting processes, revolutionary reactions to external and internal stimuli are unnecessary and industrial co-evolution of people, processes and products will replace industrial revolutions

    The Development of a Comprehensive Mechanism for Intracellular Calcium Oscillations: A Theoretical Approach and an Experimental Validation

    Calcium is an important second messenger for cellular communication. Theoretical models help scientists understand its signalling mechanism. A comprehensive model was developed in order to minimize any limitations in the models currently presented in the literature. Experimental results support the model and therefore the theoretical model provides a plausible explanation of the dynamics of the calcium-signaling mechanism. In the future, additional verification will be performed using various experimental configurations on PC12 cells. Further, the model will be used to predict the response of cells to environmental factors such as pesticides and heavy metals

    The Relationship of Mother's Role in Stimulation with Motor Development in Toddler

    Toddler period is an important phase in the growth and development of children. The role of parents, especially mothers, is needed to help children develop motor skills so that children's development can be maximized. The objective of this study is to analyze the mother's role in stimulating the child's motor development. The research method is cross sectional. The population in this study were mothers who had children aged 1-3 years in the work area of the Mangasa Primary Health Center, Makassar, amounting to 45 people. The sample in this study was 45 people, taken with a saturated sampling technique or the total population. The statistical test used the chi square test. The results presented that 95.7% of mothers who played a role in stimulating children's motor development had children whose development was appropriate. The results of the chi square test obtained p value <0.001. The conclusion is that there is a relationship between mother's role in stimulation and the motor development of toddler. It is expected that the Primary Health Center or midwives will provide training to mothers about providing developmental stimulation so that mothers can independently assess their child's development and pay attention to their child's development according to age.Toddler period is an important phase in the growth and development of children.     Boundary conditions and symplectic structure in the Chern-Simons formulation of (2+1)-dimensional gravity

    We propose a description of open universes in the Chern-Simons formulation of (2+1)-dimensional gravity where spatial infinity is implemented as a puncture. At this puncture, additional variables are introduced which lie in the cotangent bundle of the Poincar\'e group, and coupled minimally to the Chern-Simons gauge field. We apply this description of spatial infinity to open universes of general genus and with an arbitrary number of massive spinning particles. Using results of [9] we give a finite dimensional description of the phase space and determine its symplectic structure. In the special case of a genus zero universe with spinless particles, we compare our result to the symplectic structure computed by Matschull in the metric formulation of (2+1)-dimensional gravity. We comment on the quantisation of the phase space and derive a quantisation condition for the total mass and spin of an open universe.Comment: 44 pages, 3 eps figure

    Born on 19 November 1912: he, George Palade, a man who contributed so much to the progress of modern cell biology

    In his 1971 paper George Palade wrote for Albert Claude, the founder of biological electron microscopic method: “Seldom has a field owed so much to a single man”. Herein, we articulate the same words for George Palade, the Teacher of many generations in cell biology research and education. Herein we focus on the paradigm shifts in the cell biology, namely the transition from light to transmission electron microscopy in studying cell protein secretion made by George Palade. Onward, we discuss on the transition from contractile to secretory phenotype of vascular smooth muscle cells initiated by Maria Daria Haust and developed by our research group. Taken together, we argue that one of the present challenges in cell biology is to cultivate secretocentric thinking and thus further focusing on how we could make secretory pathways work for the benefit of human’s health

    Turing Instability in a Boundary-fed System

    The formation of localized structures in the chlorine dioxide-idodine-malonic acid (CDIMA) reaction-diffusion system is investigated numerically using a realistic model of this system. We analyze the one-dimensional patterns formed along the gradients imposed by boundary feeds, and study their linear stability to symmetry-breaking perturbations (Turing instability) in the plane transverse to these gradients. We establish that an often-invoked simple local linear analysis which neglects longitudinal diffusion is inappropriate for predicting the linear stability of these patterns. Using a fully nonuniform analysis, we investigate the structure of the patterns formed along the gradients and their stability to transverse Turing pattern formation as a function of the values of two control parameters: the malonic acid feed concentration and the size of the reactor in the dimension along the gradients.     IL‐27 and TGFβ mediated expansion of Th1 and adaptive regulatory T cells expressing IL‐10 correlates with bacterial burden and disease severity in pulmonary tuberculosis

    CD4(+) T cell expression of IL-10 is an important mechanism controlling immunity to tuberculosis (TB). To identify the CD4(+) T cell subsets producing IL-10 in human TB, we enumerated the frequencies of IL-10 expressing CD4(+) T cell subsets following TB—antigen stimulation of cells from individuals with pulmonary (PTB) and latent TB (LTB). We first demonstrate that TB antigens induce an expansion of IL-10 expressing Th1 (IL-10(+), IFNγ(+), T-bet(+)), Th2 (IL-10(+), IL-4(+), GATA-3(+)), Th9 (IL-10(+), IL-9(+), IL-4(−)), Th17 (IL-10(+), IL-17(+), IFNγ(−)), and natural and adaptive regulatory T cells [nTregs; IL-10(+), CD4(+), CD25(+), Foxp3(+) and aTregs; IL-10 single(+), CD4(+), CD25(−), Foxp3(−)] in PTB and LTB individuals, with frequencies being significantly higher in the former. However, only Th1 cells and adaptive Tregs expressing IL-10 exhibit a positive relationship with bacterial burdens and extent of disease in PTB. Finally, we show that IL-27 and TGFβ play an important role in the regulation of IL-10(+) Th cell subsets. Thus, active PTB is characterized by an IL-27 and TGFβ mediated expansion of IL-10 expressing CD4(+) T cell subsets, with IL-10(+) Th1 and IL-10(+) aTreg cells playing a potentially pivotal role in the pathogenesis of active disease

    A randomized study on migration of the Spectron EF and the Charnley flanged 40 cemented femoral components using radiostereometric analysis at 2 years

    Background and purpose: We performed a randomized study to determine the migration patterns of the Spectron EF femoral stem and to compare them with those of the Charnley stem, which is regarded by many as the gold standard for comparison of implants due to its extensive documentation. Patients and methods: 150 patients with a mean age of 70 years were randomized, single-blinded, to receive either a cemented Charnley flanged 40 monoblock, stainless steel, vaquasheen surface femoral stem with a 22.2-mm head (n = 30) or a cemented Spectron EF modular, matte, straight, collared, cobalt-chrome femoral stem with a 28-mm femoral head and a roughened proximal third of the stem (n = 120). The patients were followed with repeated radiostereometric analysis for 2 years to assess migration. Results: At 2 years, stem retroversion was 2.3° and 0.7° (p < 0.001) and posterior translation was 0.44 mm and 0.17 mm (p = 0.002) for the Charnley group (n = 26) and the Spectron EF group (n = 74), respectively. Subsidence was 0.26 mm for the Charnley and 0.20 mm for the Spectron EF (p = 0.5). Interpretation: The Spectron EF femoral stem was more stable than the Charnley flanged 40 stem in our study when evaluated at 2 years. In a report from the Norwegian arthroplasty register, the Spectron EF stem had a higher revision rate due to aseptic loosening beyond 5 years than the Charnley. Initial stability is not invariably related to good long-term results. Our results emphasize the importance of prospective long-term follow-up of prosthetic implants in clinical trials and national registries and a stepwise introduction of implants
