    Pelvic trauma : WSES classification and guidelines

    Complex pelvic injuries are among the most dangerous and deadly trauma related lesions. Different classification systems exist, some are based on the mechanism of injury, some on anatomic patterns and some are focusing on the resulting instability requiring operative fixation. The optimal treatment strategy, however, should keep into consideration the hemodynamic status, the anatomic impairment of pelvic ring function and the associated injuries. The management of pelvic trauma patients aims definitively to restore the homeostasis and the normal physiopathology associated to the mechanical stability of the pelvic ring. Thus the management of pelvic trauma must be multidisciplinary and should be ultimately based on the physiology of the patient and the anatomy of the injury. This paper presents the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) classification of pelvic trauma and the management Guidelines.Peer reviewe

    Ecosystem models of bivalve aquaculture: Implications for supporting goods and services

    In this paper we focus on the role of ecosystem models in improving our understanding of the complex relationships between bivalve farming and the dynamics of lower trophic levels. To this aim, we review spatially explicit models of phytoplankton impacted by bivalve grazing and discuss the results of three case studies concerning an estuary (Baie des Veys, France), a bay, (Tracadie Bay, Prince Edward Island, Canada) and an open coastal area (Adriatic Sea, Emilia-Romagna coastal area, Italy). These models are intended to provide insight for aquaculture management, but their results also shed light on the spatial distribution of phytoplankton and environmental forcings of primary production. Even though new remote sensing technologies and remotely operated in situ sensors are likely to provide relevant data for assessing some the impacts of bivalve farming at an ecosystem scale, the results here summarized indicate that ecosystem modelling will remain the main tool for assessing ecological carrying capacity and providing management scenarios in the context of global drivers, such as climate change

    Outsourcing performance quality assessment using data envelopment analytics

    The growth of vendor procurement and supply chain management simultaneously emerged as organizational outsourcing practices increased. Outsourcing, as an important strategic organizational practice, needs to be carefully examined from an organizational performance perspective to ensure satisfactory quality of services and goods from supply chains. This article provides a model for performance assessment of an outsourcer's processes in a supply chain comprised of several internal and external entities. Internal entities are entities in a supply chain that the outsourcer can manage and control. External entities are entities whose processes are not within the management sphere and control of the outsourcer, yet affect an outsourcer's performance. A slacks-based measure is incorporated into a hybrid network data envelopment analysis model to evaluate the outsourcer performance incorporating both entity types. A case study of a service supply chain in the banking industry comprised of a commercial bank, its sub-processes, and an external investment bank is used as an illustrative application of the model. Insights are presented and future research directions are identified

    Numerical and asymptotic analysis of the three-dimensional electrohydrodynamic interactions of drop pairs

    We study the pairwise interactions of drops in an applied uniform DC electric field within the framework of the leaky dielectric model. We develop three-dimensional numerical simulations using the boundary integral method and an analytical theory assuming small drop deformations. We apply the simulations and the theory to explore the electrohydrodynamic interactions between two identical drops with arbitrary orientation of their line of centres relative to the applied field direction. Our results show a complex dynamics depending on the conductivities and permittivities of the drops and suspending fluids, and the initial drop pair alignment with the applied electric field
