The crystal structure of the orientationally disordered, cubic high-temperature phase of NaC104 has been investigated using single crystal X-ray diffraction data. Space group Fm3m-O5h, Z = 4, sodium and chlorine as in NaCl, oxygen in position 96 j (occupation factor 1/6)

Spatial aspects of producer milk price formation in Kenya: a joint household-GIS approach
Smallholder dairy production is a widespread and growing activity in the Kenyan highlands, and a potentially important source of livelihood for many poor farmers with road access to urban areas of East and Southern Africa. Yet both market participation and net prices received vary widely across households. It is hypothesized that transport difficulties over poor roads directly affect farmer ability and willingness to participate in this market for a highly perishable commodity, even where asset and information levels would otherwise permit such participation. Furthermore, otherwise identical milk sales in a given market can yield very different farm-gate milk prices across farms, for the same reason, depending on the location of the farm. A Heckman iterative selection model is fitted to explain market participation and milk prices received across households for 712 observations on marketing (or non-marketing) of milk by Kenyan smallholders in the greater Nairobi milkshed. GIS-derived variables for distance and transport costs are combined with survey-derived variables for household characteristics to model market participation and the formation of farm-level milk prices. Parameters are used to specify milk price distance decay functions. The results differentiate the effects of roads by type and distance, and highlight the importance of milk production density and market infrastructure. Policy implications are discussed
High resolution characterisation of microstructural evolution in RbFeSe crystals on annealing
The superconducting and magnetic properties of phase-separated
AFeSe compounds are known to depend on post-growth heat
treatments and cooling profiles. This paper focusses on the evolution of
microstructure on annealing, and how this influences the superconducting
properties of RbFeSe crystals. We find that the minority phase in
the as-grown crystal has increased unit cell anisotropy (c/a ratio), reduced Rb
content and increased Fe content compared to the matrix. The microstructure is
rather complex, with two-phase mesoscopic plate-shaped features aligned along
{113} habit planes. The minority phase are strongly facetted on the {113}
planes, which we have shown to be driven by minimising the volume strain energy
introduced as a result of the phase transformation. Annealing at 488K results
in coarsening of the mesoscopic plate-shaped features and the formation of a
third distinct phase. The subtle differences in structure and chemistry of the
minority phase(s) in the crystals are thought to be responsible for changes in
the superconducting transition temperature. In addition, scanning photoemission
microscopy has clearly shown that the electronic structure of the minority
phase has a higher occupied density of states of the low binding energy Fe3d
orbitals, characteristic of crystals that exhibit superconductivity. This
demonstrates a clear correlation between the Fe-vacancy-free phase with high
c/a ratio and the electronic structure characteristics of the superconducting
phase.Comment: 6 figures v2 is exactly the same as v1. The typesetting errors in the

Using the economic surplus model to measure potential returns to international livestock research. The case of trypanosomosis vaccine research
This study illustrates how productivity impacts resulting from livestock research can be measured using a herd simulation model, how the results of this model can be extended spatially using geographic information systems (GIS) to determine the potential increase in livestock production that would result from adoption of a new technology, and how an economic surplus model can be used to value the estimated productivity impacts. The particular problem examined is trypanosomosis in cattle in Africa, and the potential research product is a multi-component vaccine. The results suggest that the potential benefits of trypanosomiasis control, in terms of meat and milk productivity alone are worth over US$ 700 million per year in Africa. The methodology developed in this study can be used to measure the benefits of alleviating constraints to livestock production and the potential returns to research and development approaches addressing those constraints. The results of this study will assist in research priority setting and have highlighted the need for further research aimed at better understanding who the beneficiaries of the vaccine will be, and how it will reach them
