    Resilience Fostering Music Therapy: Developing a Music Based Method for Children and Adolescents Experiencing Short-Term Psychiatric Hospitalization

    The implementation of music therapy within short-term psychiatric treatment programs for children and adolescents is in its beginning stages. In an attempt to develop a method which informed the profession and remained authentic to this writer’s approach as a clinician and emerging researcher, a two-part intervention protocol was developed within a resilience fostering framework, and through a culturally sensitive and trauma informed lens. Fostering resilience was defined in terms of increasing distress tolerance, increasing insight, and the use of coping skills. The implementation of the group on-site protocol intervention showed promising results specifically in promoting music as a coping skill and promoting communication between the therapist and the participants about culture and identity in relationship to music. The self-exploration protocol expanded the inquiry, provided direct experience and insight about the benefits of the intervention, and informed discussion regarding areas for improvement

    Moxifloxacin Concentration and Proteomic Analysis of Aqueous Humor in Human Uveitis Associated with Oral Moxifloxacin Therapy

    PURPOSE: The aim was to report the aqueous humor moxifloxacin concentration and proteome profile of an individual with bilateral uveitis-like syndrome with pigment dispersion. METHODS: Multiple reactions monitoring mass spectrometry quantified the aqueous concentration of moxifloxacin in the affected individual. Shotgun proteomic analysis performed via liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) defined the protein profile in the affected individual and unaffected control samples. RESULTS: Moxifloxacin was present at higher than expected levels in aqueous humor 18 days following oral administration. One-third of the proteins were identified by significantly lower spectral counts in the aqueous of the individual with moxifloxacin associated uveitis compared to the unaffected control. CONCLUSION: Moxifloxacin was detected in aqueous humor 18 days following the completion of oral administration. These results suggest that moxifloxacin toxicity may be responsible for the uveitis-like syndrome with pigment dispersion syndrome induced by moxifloxacin therapy

    Frateuria defendens reduces yellows disease symptoms in grapevine under field conditions

    Yellows diseases in grapevine, associated with the presence of different phytoplasmas, are a major problem for growers, with no environmentally friendly means of control. Frateuria defendens (Frd), a bacterium with endophytic traits, has been shown to reduce yellows symptoms in grapevine plantlets under laboratory conditions. The objective of this study was to test whether similar effects could be achieved under field conditions. A trial was conducted in a heavily infected vineyard in northern Israel for two consecutive years. A suspension of Frd cells (108·mL-1) was applied bi-weekly by foliar spray on grapevines from bud burst to leaf senescence. Frd penetrated the leaves during the growing period but not during leaf senescence and could be detected in the leaves by PCR analysis up to 14 days post-spraying. The rate of yellows infection was lower in the treated grapevines compared to its increase in untreated grapevines and the yield of symptomatic plants was improved by 10 to 20 %. Taken together, the results suggest Frd acted as a biological control agent in vineyards under the experimental conditions tested

    Olive mill wastewater (OMWW) presents a challenge to the control of effluents due to the presence of a high organic load, antimicrobial agents (monomeric-polymeric phenols, volatile acids, polyalcohols, and tannins), salinity and acidity. In this study, the production of extracellular laccase, monomeric or polymeric phenol, from an OMWW isolate based on its ability to biodegrade phenols and gallic acid as a model of phenolic compounds in OMWW was investigated. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S RNA gene sequences identified the bacterial isolate (Acinetobacter REY) as being closest to Acinetobacter pittii. This isolate exhibited a constitutive production of extracellular laccase with an activity of 1.5 and 1.3 U ml/L when supplemented with the inducers CuSO4 and CuSO4+phenols, respectively. Batch experiments containing minimal media supplemented with phenols or gallic acid as the sole carbon and energy source were performed in order to characterize their phenolic biodegradability. Acinetobacter REY was capable of biodegrading up to 200 mg/L of phenols and gallic acid both after 10 h and 72 h, respectively.Las aguas residuales de almazara (OMWW) presentan un desafío a los efluentes debido a la presencia de una carga orgánica alta, agentes antimicrobianos (fenoles monoméricos y poliméricos, ácidos volátiles, polialcoholes y taninos), salinidad y acidez. En este estudio, se investigó la producción de lacasa extracelular a partir de un aislado de OMWW basado en su capacidad para biodegradar fenol y ácido gálico como modelo de compuestos fenólicos en OMWW. El análisis filogenético de las secuencias del gen de ARN 16S identifico el aislado bacteriano (Acinetobacter REY) como el más cercano a Acinetobacter pittii. Este aislado exhibió producción constitutiva de lacasa extracelular con una actividad de 1.5 y 1.3 U mL/L cuando se suplemento con los inductores CuSO4 y CuSO4 + fenol, respectivamente. Se realizaron experimentos en lotes que contenían medios mínimos suplementados con fenol o acido gálico como la única fuente de carbono y energía con el fin de caracterizar su biodegradabilidad fenólica. Acinetobacter REY fue capaz de biodegradar hasta 200 mg/L de fenol y acido gálico después de 10 y 72 h, respectivamente

    Abstract125I-[Tyr2]scyllatoxin allowed to label a single class of high-affinity receptors in membranes from the human neuroblastoma cell line NB-OK 1. The Kd of these receptors was 60 pM for scyllatoxin (Leiurotoxin I) and 20 pM for apamin and the Bmax was low (3.8 fmol/mg membrane protein). K+ increased toxin binding at low concentrations but exerted opposite effects at high concentrations. Ca2+, guanidinium and Na+ exerted only inhibitory effects on binding. Scyllatoxin binding sites were overexpressed 2.5-fold after a 24-h cell pretreatment with 2 mM butyrate. This effect was suppressed by cycloheximide
