    What can health inequalities researchers learn from an intersectionality perspective?:Understanding social dynamics with an inter-categorical approach

    The concept of intersectionality was developed by social scientists seeking to analyse the multiple interacting influences of social location, identity and historical oppression. Despite broad take-up elsewhere, its application in public health remains underdeveloped. We consider how health inequalities research in the United Kingdom has predominantly taken class and later socioeconomic position as its key axis in a manner that tends to overlook other crucial dimensions. We especially focus on international research on ethnicity, gender and caste to argue that an intersectional perspective is relevant for health inequalities research because it compels researchers to move beyond (but not ignore) class and socioeconomic position in analysing the structural determinants of health. Drawing on these theoretical developments, we argue for an inter-categorical conceptualisation of social location that recognises differentiation without reifying social groupings – thus encouraging researchers to focus on social dynamics rather than social categories, recognising that experiences of advantage and disadvantage reflect the exercise of power across social institutions. Such an understanding may help address the historic tendency of health inequalities research to privilege methodological issues and consider different axes of inequality in isolation from one another, encouraging researchers to move beyond micro-level behaviours to consider the structural drivers of inequalities

    Roadmap on dynamics of molecules and clusters in the gas phase

    This roadmap article highlights recent advances, challenges and future prospects in studies of the dynamics of molecules and clusters in the gas phase. It comprises nineteen contributions by scientists with leading expertise in complementary experimental and theoretical techniques to probe the dynamics on timescales spanning twenty order of magnitudes, from attoseconds to minutes and beyond, and for systems ranging in complexity from the smallest (diatomic) molecules to clusters and nanoparticles. Combining some of these techniques opens up new avenues to unravel hitherto unexplored reaction pathways and mechanisms, and to establish their significance in, e.g. radiotherapy and radiation damage on the nanoscale, astrophysics, astrochemistry and atmospheric science

    Biogeographical and cross-shelf patterns of reef fish assemblages in a transition zone

    Transition zones have complex patterns of biogeography and biodiversity which require consideration in conservation planning. Cross-shelf patterns of reef fish assemblage structure and biogeographic representation were determined for the Solitary Islands Marine Park (SIMP), positioned in a tropical-temperate overlap on the east coast of Australia. Sixty-eight sites were surveyed on shallow (\u3c25 m) reefs across an inshore–offshore gradient, using timed counts. Tropical taxa were most prevalent, comprising 50% of the 254 species recorded. Australian endemics accounted for 23% of species, with east coast endemics (14%) predominating. There was a strong cross-shelf gradient, with species richness increasing offshore. There was also a distinct biogeographical gradient with the proportion of temperate species decreasing and tropical species increasing with increasing distance from shore. This gradient was similar for endemic and cosmopolitan species as many of the endemics were temperate or subtropical, and many of the tropical species were widespread Indo-Pacific taxa. These patterns are consistent with sites further offshore being more frequently exposed to the tropical East Australian Current (EAC). Patterns on reefs further inshore are consistent with the high levels of endemism previously reported for temperate and subtropical Australian waters. The complex cross-shelf arrangement of tropical, subtropical and temperate species results in high regional biodiversity and needs to be recognised in marine-park planning

    The EU and the UN Legally-Binding Instrument on the Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction

    The paper offers an in-depth reading of the role that the European Union (EU) may play during the current negotiations in the United Nations for the adoption of a new international legally binding agreement on biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction. Despite the complexity of the object and the interests of the negotiations in question, the study stresses the added value of the EU to speak with a single voice on behalf of its MSs, thank on the new status that the EU has in the United Nations General Assembly since 2011. In fact, such a status may assist a major sharing of position of the EU among other States, by covering also the legal gaps of the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), concerning the protection of the marine biological diversity and, mainly, the definition and framework of Marine Genetic Resources. Besides, the paper stresses the idea that the EU may interconnect the new international agreement with other international instruments and International Organizations (IOs), in which the EU is an active player, guarantying in this way a concrete coordination and implementation of UNCLOS. Finally, the study will move to consider a pragmatic position expressed by the EU during the negotiations, together with its MSs, trying to understand whether and to what extent it can represent a possible third way to walk on
