Oxidative Stress Resistance in <i>Drosophila melanogaster</i>
As a result of normal physiological processes, organisms generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), which include hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and some free radicals, including superoxide radicals (O2). When the balance between pro- and antioxidants is perturbed, an organism is subjected to oxidative stress. This gives rise to oxidative damage, the accumulation of which has been implicated in ageing. This thesis describes work using Drosophila melanogaster as a model system to elucidate the relationship between oxidative stress and lifespan, focusing on glutamate-cysteine ligase (GCL), the rate-limiting enzyme in the glutathione pathway, a major component of the body’s antioxidant defence mechanism.
GCL is a dimer, consisting of a -23kDa modifier subunit (GCLM) with no individual catalytic activity and a -73kDa catalytic subunit (GCLC). Under conditions of oxidative stress, the catalytic subunit, which has some individual activity, binds to GCLM to form a more catalytically efficient holoenzyme via the formation of disulphide bridges. Using the GAL4-UAS system, this study examined the consequences of perturbation of glutathione titres in relation to whole-organism physiology, over-expressing both sub-units (individually and in combination) in a variety of tissues. Results demonstrate that pan-neural over-expression can be beneficial, leading to an increase in lifespan. However, ubiquitous over-expression has been found to have serious detrimental effects during development. No correlation was demonstrated between the extended longevity phenotype and an increase in organismal oxidative stress resistance. These findings strongly suggest that the relationship between a reduction in oxidants and the benefits to an organism is not a simple one. They also implicate neural tissue as a key lifespan-limiting tissue type
Electrical Characterization and Testing of Microelectronic Materials, Devices, and Circuits
This project, strengthening the microelectronics program in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (ECE), proposes to establish an electrical characterization and test laboratory which will provide the capability for measuring electrical properties of materials, devices, and circuits. Electrical test equipment for the measurement and characterization of dielectric materials, devices, and circuit components, will be acquired in order to provide students with hands-on experience in electrical measurements complementing the other labs in the ECE Department. In addition to providing training in microelectronics testing, the facility will allow for expanded research in the area of solid-state electronics. Focusing on material characterization, including thin films and novel gas-sensor, the project pursues the following objectives for the proposed lab:
Characterizing electronic thins films,
Enabling systematic characterization of novel devices including gas-sensors, and
Providing a state-of-the-art capability for testing custom-designed integrated circuits.
The amount of time needed to adequately test integrated circuits has been increasing with the greater level of integration in modern microelectronics. Continued increases in the density of the microelectronic circuits push against fundamental limits of device operation, driving the need for novel devices and new electronic materials. Hence, the microelectronic community should exhibit interest in a systematic approach to testing and characterization of new materials, devices, and circuits. Synergistic with existing programs at the University of Maine (e.g., sensor development, new materials development, and materials and device modeling), the project will contribute to strengthen the relationship between the ECE Department and the semiconductor industry in Maine, provide students with skills needed by these companies, and help forge relationships with research groups involved in electronic materials development
Is the Charism of Biblical Inspiration “Open”? The Answer of the Revelation of John
The author of this article asks whether the charism of biblical inspiration is “open” and answers this question affirmatively by analyzing the expression egenomēn en pneumati (“I was in the Spirit”) used in Revelation 1:10 and 4:2 as well as the narrative dynamics of Revelation in the context of the presence of the liturgical assembly as the main subject that interprets the book. Revelation looks at its content and the manner in which it has been recorded in terms of the inspiring action of the Holy Spirit (egenomēn en pneumati, “I was under the inspiration of the Spirit”), which leads John of Patmos to formulate new ideas on the basis of texts which are already considered inspired (as manifested by the accumulation of Old Testament allusions). Hence, it can be concluded that the book sees itself as an inspired text and perceives its inspiration as an actualizing one, a continuation of the inspiration that accompanied the creation of the Old Testament Scriptures. As he records his visionary experience, John is aware that this is being done under the influence of the same Spirit who influenced the creation of the Scriptures. By using these texts, he recreates the Word within the logic of a Christocentric dynamic. The same pattern of action of the Spirit as the agent of inspiration is repeated in the life of the community of hearers or readers (i.e., the liturgical assembly gathered for the Sunday liturgy), which, by opening itself to the operation of the Holy Spirit, becomes an inspired community that is led by the Spirit to discover, decipher and practice what He Himself intended to communicate through John, and thus to recreate the Word that has been heard in the community’s own environment, that is, in its “here and now.” What takes place in that manner is an “inspired reading” of the prophecy that has been read and heard. Revelation points to certain elements which are necessary for the charism of biblical inspiration to continue in the community of hearers or readers, including a liturgical reading in the Sunday liturgical assembly that takes into account the unity of Sacred Scripture and leads to Christ (i.e., a Christological reading).Czy charyzmat natchnienie biblijnego jest „otwarty”? Odpowiedź Apokalipsy św. Jana
Estimating the Effect of Home Court Advantage on Wins in the NBA
How much of a factor does home court advantage have in producing wins? This paper seeks to answer that question by using a logit regression to analyze the determinants of winning at home. The dependent variable will be a dummy variable of wins. Based on theory, it is hypothesized that home court advantage exists, and that it can be explained mostly by fan attendance, familiarity with the court, and referee bias

After the archive : framing cultural memory in ex-Yugoslav collections
Upon Yugoslavia’s breakup into five successor states in the 1990s, its national archives also divided according to the new national borders. This re-ordering of institutional history took most dramatic form in the systematic destruction of the archival records held by Bosnia-Herzegovina; incendiary shells destroyed the holdings of its National Library in 1992. In contrast to the national divisions that “balkanized” and obliterated the archives, ex-Yugoslav compilations draw works from and about the region together. This dissertation analyzes the collections that formed as “alternative archives” in response to Yugoslavia’s dissolution and tracks how individual works within these collections are translated and reframed as they circulate internationally. It argues that distinct texts gathered together into the unit of the collection can effectively convey the complexity and contradiction of ex-Yugoslav cultural politics. Whereas compilations of texts of texts identified as representing various nationalities approximate international alliance through unities such as “internationals women’s solidarity,” “European unification” and “Yugoslav reunification,” close reading of the texts juxtaposed within the collections can also complicate the progressive solidarity that frames them. Ex-Yugoslav collections of print and film, and the situated interpretations they engender, provide a rich archive of responses to the post-Cold-War transition toward globalization and Europeanization in the midst of ethnic and religious extremism. In this project, I describe the “collection” as the product of gathering individual texts together, arranging them, and framing them with a unifying narrative. Literary anthologies, library archives, museum exhibits and film programs at festivals thus all function as collections, or archives, of cultural materials formed during and after Yugoslavia’s dissolution. I argue that the works in these collections reflect forms of organization and alliance that disrupt the common sense of existing geopolitical alignment and put pressure on normative desires for a post-Yugoslav future based on European attachments.Englis
Productivity of triticale (Triticosecale) in aspect of intercropping with narrow-leaf lupine (Lupinus angustifolius)
The experiment was conducted in the years 2009-2010 in an experimental facility of Wrocław Agricultural University located in Pawłowice (17º02´E, 51º31´N, on a height of 122 meters above sea level.). The goal of the research was to determine the influence of the way the cropping is performed (pure and mixed sowing of narrow-leaf lupine) on the productivity of the Dublet triticale variety. The mixed cropping had four different proportions of triticale and narrow-leaf lupine sowing. The most important morphological attributes of triticale and the elements of cropping structure were determined. As an outcome of the performed research the fact was stated, that the sowing proportions affect both whole plants and seeds attributes changes. Influence of narrow-leaf lupine type on the quantity of grain yield in the mixtures was observed. Majority of biometric attributes was showing a statistically significant dependency on the amount of the sowing mixture components

Studium inspirowane twórczością Geralda O’Collinsa i Josepha Ratzingera”
The author of the article asks whether we need a theology of biblical inspiration. The answer to this question is in the affirmative, since theology lacks a comprehensive theological study of this topic. The statements of Pope Benedict XVI in Verbum Domini and the encouragement expressed by Cardinal Gerhard Müller in the introduction to the document of the Pontifical Biblical Commission entitled Inspiration and Truth of Scripture (2014) support this claim . The author of this article gives an affirmative answer to this question by examining the proposal for a reasonably comprehensive account of the theology of inspiration articulated in a monograph From a Theology of Revelation to a Theology of Inspiration by Sławomir Zatwardnicki. A study is inspired by the works of Gerald O’Collins and Joseph Ratzinger, which constitute a starting point for further theological discussion. Autor artykułu odpowiada twierdząco na to pytanie, analizując propozycję w miarę całościowego ujęcia teologii natchnienia zaprezentowaną w monografii Sławomira Zatwardnickiego Od teologii objawienia do teologii natchnienia. Studium inspirowane twórczością Geralda O’Collinsa i Josepha Ratzingera, która staje się punktem wyjścia do dalszej dyskusji teologicznej
