Comparison of outcomes in emergency department patients with suspected cardiac chest pain: two-centre prospective observational study in Southern China
Background
Hong Kong (HK) and Guangzhou (GZ) are cities in China with different healthcare systems. This study aimed to compare 30-day and 6-month mortality and characteristics of patients with suspected cardiac chest pain admitted to two emergency departments (ED) in HK and GZ.
Methods
A prospective observational study enrolled patients with suspected cardiac chest pain presenting to EDs in the Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH), HK and the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University (AHGZMU),GZ. The primary outcome was 30-day and 6-month mortality.
Results
In total, 996 patients were recruited, 407 cases from GZ and 589 cases from HK.The 30-day and 6-month mortality of chest patients were 3.7% and 4.7% in GZand 0.3% and 1.9% in HK, respectively. Serum creatinine level (Cr) was an independent factor for 30-day mortality whilst Cr and systolic blood pressure (SBP) were independent factors for 6-month mortality. In Cox regression analysis, unadjusted and adjusted hazard ratios for 30-day and 6-month mortality in GZ were significantly increased.
Conclusion
The 30-day and 6-month mortality of patients with suspected cardiac chest pain in Guangzhou were higher than in Hong Kong due to due to different baseline clinical characteristics of patients and different distributions of diagnoses, which were associated with different healthcare systems. Serum creatinine and SBP were independent factors for 30-day and 6-month mortality
Delocalized single-photon Dicke states and the Leggett- Garg inequality in solid state systems
We show how to realize a single-photon Dicke state in a large one-dimensional
array of two- level systems, and discuss how to test its quantum properties.
Realization of single-photon Dicke states relies on the cooperative nature of
the interaction between a field reservoir and an array of two-level-emitters.
The resulting dynamics of the delocalized state can display Rabi-like
oscillations when the number of two-level emitters exceeds several hundred. In
this case the large array of emitters is essentially behaving like a
mirror-less cavity. We outline how this might be realized using a
multiple-quantum-well structure and discuss how the quantum nature of these
oscillations could be tested with the Leggett-Garg inequality and its

Most vital segment barriers
We study continuous analogues of "vitality" for discrete network flows/paths,
and consider problems related to placing segment barriers that have highest
impact on a flow/path in a polygonal domain. This extends the graph-theoretic
notion of "most vital arcs" for flows/paths to geometric environments. We give
hardness results and efficient algorithms for various versions of the problem,
(almost) completely separating hard and polynomially-solvable cases

Containment and equivalence of weighted automata: Probabilistic and max-plus cases
This paper surveys some results regarding decision problems for probabilistic and max-plus automata, such as containment and equivalence. Probabilistic and max-plus automata are part of the general family of weighted automata, whose semantics are maps from words to real values. Given two weighted automata, the equivalence problem asks whether their semantics are the same, and the containment problem whether one is point-wise smaller than the other one. These problems have been studied intensively and this paper will review some techniques used to show (un)decidability and state a list of open questions that still remain

Validity and reliability of a modified english version of the physical activity questionnaire for adolescents
BACKGROUND: Adaptation of physical activity self-report questionnaires is sometimes required to reflect the activity behaviours of diverse populations. The processes used to modify self-report questionnaires though are typically underreported. This two-phased study used a formative approach to investigate the validity and reliability of the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents (PAQ-A) in English youth. Phase one examined test content and response process validity and subsequently informed a modified version of the PAQ-A. Phase two assessed the validity and reliability of the modified PAQ-A. METHODS: In phase one, focus groups (n = 5) were conducted with adolescents (n = 20) to investigate test content and response processes of the original PAQ-A. Based on evidence gathered in phase one, a modified version of the questionnaire was administered to participants (n = 169, 14.5 ± 1.7 years) in phase two. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were assessed using Cronbach’s alpha and intra-class correlations, respectively. Spearman correlations were used to assess associations between modified PAQ-A scores and accelerometer-derived physical activity, self-reported fitness and physical activity self-efficacy. RESULTS: Phase one revealed that the original PAQ-A was unrepresentative for English youth and that item comprehension varied. Contextual and population/cultural-specific modifications were made to the PAQ-A for use in the subsequent phase. In phase two, modified PAQ-A scores had acceptable internal consistency (α = 0.72) and test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.78). Modified PAQ-A scores were significantly associated with objectively assessed moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (r = 0.39), total physical activity (r = 0.42), self-reported fitness (r = 0.35), and physical activity self-efficacy (r = 0.32) (p ≤ 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The modified PAQ-A had acceptable internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Modified PAQ-A scores displayed weak-to-moderate correlations with objectively measured physical activity, self-reported fitness, and self-efficacy providing evidence of satisfactory criterion and construct validity, respectively. Further testing with more diverse English samples is recommended to provide a more complete assessment of the tool. Processing and characterization of chitosan microspheres to be used as templates for layer-by-layer assembly
Chitosan (Ch) microspheres have been developed
by precipitation method, cross-linked with glutaraldehyde
and used as a template for layer-by-layer (LBL)
deposition of two natural polyelectrolytes. Using a LBL
methodology, Ch microspheres were alternately coated with
hyaluronic acid (HA) and Ch under mild conditions. The
roughness of the Ch-based crosslinked microspheres was
characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Morphological
characterization was performed by environmental
scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), scanning
electron microscopy (SEM) and stereolight microscopy.
The swelling behaviour of the microspheres demonstrated
that the ones with more bilayers presented the highest water
uptake and the uncoated cross-linked Ch microspheres
showed the lowest uptake capability. Microspheres presented
spherical shape with sizes ranging from 510 to
840 lm. ESEM demonstrated that a rougher surface with
voids is formed in multilayered microspheres caused by the
irregular stacking of the layers. A short term mechanical
stability assay was also performed, showing that the LBL
procedure with more than five bilayers of HA/Ch over Ch
cross-linked microspheres provide higher mechanical
stability
The Distances of the Magellanic Clouds
The present status of our knowledge of the distances to the Magellanic Clouds
is evaluated from a post-Hipparcos perspective. After a brief summary of the
effects of structure, reddening, age and metallicity, the primary distance
indicators for the Large Magellanic Cloud are reviewed: The SN 1987A ring,
Cepheids, RR Lyraes, Mira variables, and Eclipsing Binaries. Distances derived
via these methods are weighted and combined to produce final "best" estimates
