Personal identification and verification systems are very important for high security and ease of usage in these days. These systems are hand recognition, fingerprint recognition, iris recognition; face recognition which uses biometrics traits. These are the systems with which the entry/ exit of personnel or students in and out of the factories, firms, hospitals and schools are controlled, with which the number of working days and hours are found, in short with which all the information can be obtained. Two classification methods are used in this project. They are k-Nearest Neighbor Algorithm and Linear Discriminant Analysis. The success rate of k-NN Method is 97.0 percent; the success rate of Linear Discriminant Analysis is 97.7 percent for the database containing 16 features with 300 hand images obtained from 60 people. The results were obtained by different methods and algorithm, and a table showing the minimum error rates according to the method used, was prepared. Results were compared. The best method for hand recognition system was decided

Avascular necrosis of the femoral head in sickle cell disease

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a life threatening hemoglobinopathy effecting various systems. SCD is an important health issue in Turkey, especially in the southern areas. The patients suffer from complications resulting from vaso-occlusion and hemolysis. Twenty- two percent of children and 49% of adults with Hb SS are reported to have avascular necrosis (AVN). The SCD panel 2014 recommends to evaluate all children with SCD and hip pain for AVN by history, physical examination, radiography and magnetic resonance imaging. Long term daily oral treatment with hydroxyurea has been shown to reduce complications in SCD. Hydroxyurea does not only increase the level of fetal hemoblobin but also it causes a reduction in the number of circulating leukocytes, increases red blood cell size. Here in two SCD patients who developed AVN in femoral head are reported and it is aimed to raise awareness to this morbidity and the importance of regular use and dosage escalation of hydroxyurea therapy

İstanbul Bilim Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi. To assess the effect of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) on pulmonary functions in patients with systemic sclerosis-associated lung disease (SSc-ILD) who experienced an inadequate response to first line cyclophosphamide (CYC) therapy. Twelve consecutive SSc-ILD patients who received MMF due to inadequate response to CYC as a first line agent, were retrospectively reviewed. Over the course of 2 years, pulmonary function tests (PFT) and high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scans were performed. Following initial baseline tests, PFTs were continued at a frequency of every 6 months and HRCT scans were performed every 12 months. After MMF treatment, values of forced vital capacity (FVC) and diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) improved in three (25%) and two (16.6%) patients, respectively. It is also noted that the evaluation of serial HCRT scans showed no change in 54.5% of patients. Our case series suggested that PFT and imaging scores seemed to be stabilized by MMF in SSc-ILD patients who were inadequate responders to CYC

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the impact of hypoglycemia during 100-g oral glucose tolerance test on perinatal outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: Obstetrics records of 411 pregnants who delivered singletons at our institution were reviewed. 31/411 (7,5 %) of patients who were diagnosed as Gestational Diabetes Mellitus were excluded from the study. The study group was consisted of pregnant women who experienced hypoglycemia defined as a plasma glucose level of 60 mg/dL or less during the 100-g oral glucose tolerance test. This group were compared with women who had normal glucose levels during 50-g oral glucose loading test (glucose challenge test) and who had normal values and had no hypoglycemia during 100-g OGTT. RESULTS: We identified 62 hypoglycemic patients (15 %) on 100-g oral glucose tolerance test and 318 non-hypoglycemic patients (77,3 %) as control group. Gestational weight gain was statistically higher in hypoglycemic group. The mean birth weight was 3419±421,9 g in the study group and 3275±491,7 g in the control group (p=0.042). Rates of babies admitted to NICU were similar in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Women who experience hypoglycemia during the OGTT have a significantly higher incidence of gestational weight gain and higher neonatal birth weights as well. As a result if a pregnant has hypoglycemia during OGTT we should monitorize her and the fetus as well carefully
