A study of charged kappa in J/ψK±Ksππ0J/\psi o K^{\pm} K_s \pi^{\mp} \pi^0

Based on 58×10658 imes 10^6 J/ψJ/\psi events collected by BESII, the decay J/ψK±Ksππ0J/\psi o K^{\pm} K_s \pi^{\mp} \pi^0 is studied. In the invariant mass spectrum recoiling against the charged K(892)±K^*(892)^{\pm}, the charged κ\kappa particle is found as a low mass enhancement. If a Breit-Wigner function of constant width is used to parameterize the kappa, its pole locates at (849±7714+18)i(256±4022+46)(849 \pm 77 ^{+18}_{-14}) -i (256 \pm 40 ^{+46}_{-22}) MeV/c2c^2. Also in this channel, the decay J/ψK(892)+K(892)J/\psi o K^*(892)^+ K^*(892)^- is observed for the first time. Its branching ratio is (1.00±0.190.32+0.11)×103(1.00 \pm 0.19 ^{+0.11}_{-0.32}) imes 10^{-3}.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

Evidence for kappa Meson Production in J/psi -> bar{K}^*(892)^0K^+pi^- Process

Based on 58 million BESII J/psi events, the bar{K}^*(892)^0K^+pi^- channel in K^+K^-pi^+pi^- is studied. A clear low mass enhancement in the invariant mass spectrum of K^+pi^- is observed. The low mass enhancement does not come from background of other J/psi decay channels, nor from phase space. Two independent partial wave analyses have been performed. Both analyses favor that the low mass enhancement is the kappa, an isospinor scalar resonant state. The average mass and width of the kappa in the two analyses are 878 +- 23^{+64}_{-55} MeV/c^2 and 499 +- 52^{+55}_{-87} MeV/c^2, respectively, corresponding to a pole at (841 +- 30^{+81}_{-73}) - i(309 +- 45^{+48}_{-72}) MeV/c^2.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure

Measurement of the gamma ray background in the Davis Cavern at the Sanford Underground Research Facility

Deep underground environments are ideal for low background searches due to the attenuation of cosmic rays by passage through the earth. However, they are affected by backgrounds from γ-rays emitted by 40K and the 238U and 232Th decay chains in the surrounding rock. The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment will search for dark matter particle interactions with a liquid xenon TPC located within the Davis campus at the Sanford Underground Research Facility, Lead, South Dakota, at the 4,850-foot level. In order to characterise the cavern background, in-situ γ-ray measurements were taken with a sodium iodide detector in various locations and with lead shielding. The integral count rates (0--3300~keV) varied from 596~Hz to 1355~Hz for unshielded measurements, corresponding to a total flux in the cavern of 1.9±0.4~γ cm−2s−1. The resulting activity in the walls of the cavern can be characterised as 220±60~Bq/kg of 40K, 29±15~Bq/kg of 238U, and 13±3~Bq/kg of 232Th

Predictors of false lumen thrombosis in type B aortic dissection treated with TEVAR

BACKGROUND: Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) offers a less invasive treatment option in type B aortic dissection (TBAD) patients and its value has been demonstrated in acute and chronic dissection patients. Total false lumen thrombosis (FLT) is associated with better long-term outcome in these patients, however, this is not obtained in all patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate predictors of FLT. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated patients who underwent TEVAR for a type B dissection in a large referral center between 2005 and 2012. All patients with a CT angiogram (CTA) obtained preoperatively, postoperatively and after one year of follow-up were selected for analysis. Volume measurements and several morphologic characteristics were analyzed for all scans using Aquarius iNtuition software (TeraRecon, San Mateo, Calif, USA). Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to study the influence of these characteristics on FLT. RESULTS: Of 132 patients that received TEVAR for an aortic dissection, 43 patients (mean age, 60.3넔.2; 30 male) met our inclusion criteria, of whom 16 (37%) developed full FLT after 1 yr of follow-up. Multivariate logistic regression showed that side branch involvement [odds ratio (OR), 0.03; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.00-0.92; P=0.045] and a total patent false lumen (FL) at presentation (OR, 0.01; 95% CI, 0.00-0.58; P=0.027) were associated with decreased complete FLT. Volumetric data showed significantly more reduction of the thoracic false lumen in FLT patients compared with non-FLT (-52.3% vs. -32.4%; P=0.043) and also a tendency of less volume increase in the abdominal segment (-5.0넷.5 vs. 21.8년.3; P=0.052). CONCLUSIONS: Patients admitted with type B dissection and branch vessel involvement or a patent entry tear after TEVAR are less likely to develop FLT and aortic remodeling during follow-up. These findings suggest that these patients may require a more extensive procedure and more intensive follow-up to prevent long-term complications

    Philosophical conceptions of information

“The original publication is available at www.springerlink.com” Copyright Springer'I love information upon all subjects that come in my way, and especially upon those that are most important.' Thus boldly declares Euphranor, one of the defenders of Christian faith in Berkley’s Alciphron (Berkeley, (1732), Dialogue 1, Section 5, Paragraph 6/10). Evidently, information has been an object of philosophical desire for some time, well before the computer revolution, Internet or the dot.com pandemonium (see for example Dunn (2001) and Adams (2003)). Yet what does Euphranor love, exactly? What is information? The question has received many answers in different fields. Unsurprisingly, several surveys do not even converge on a single, unified definition of information (see for example Braman 1989, Losee (1997), Machlup and Mansfield (1983), Debons and Cameron (1975), Larson and Debons (1983)).Peer reviewe

The use of electrophoretic techniques to separate multiple molecular forms of enzymes has been used in the biological science, where differences in isozymes among tissues can be used efficiently on cultivar differentiation during any life cycle phase. In this paper, the variability of six drought resistant peanut lines was studied by isozymes analysis aiming to verify the possible relations between enzymatic descriptors and drought resistance character. Leaflets were analyzed by horizontal poliacrylamide gel electrophoresis technique and buffer continuos systems for the following systems: acid phosphatase (ACP), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), leucine aminopeptidase (LAP), peroxidase (POX) and esterase (EST). The phenotypic characterization of the genotypes allowed four group separations to ACP, three to LAP, two to MDH, and six to POX and EST. The IAC Tupã cultivar (drought sensitive) was differentiated to the others genotypes, specially as to Senegal 55 437 cultivar (drought resistant) by principal components analysis
