Investigation into olfactory memory in unique amnesia
Section A
Section A presents a systematic literature search and narrative synthesis of the literature on long-term olfactory recognition memory in a healthy adult human population. Searches produced 18 studies, which were subject to quality appraisals. Results revealed that olfactory recognition memory was not persistent over time but rather declined due to increased false alarm rates. Studies largely employed forced-choice and alternative forced-choice recognition tasks in investigating olfactory recognition memory. Several covariates influencing the recall of odours were also identified. Overall findings deviated from previous literature but may be reflective of the limitations of this current review. Clinical implications and directions for future research are discussed.
Section B
Section B presents an observational case-control study. A clinical participant with unique, medically unexplained amnesia (SI) was compared to eight age and education-matched controls for performance on tests of olfactory recognition memory, implicit skills (mirror maze task), and a neuropsychological test battery (Short Parallel Assessments of Neuropsychology Status [SPANS]). SI performed at a similar level to control participants within his memory retention window of 1 waking-day, but by day 2 of testing (unlike controls) SI did not demonstrate any retained learning. Clinical implications and future directions for research are discussed
Purine and pyrimidine bases as growth substances for lactic acid bacteria
In 1936 Richardson (1) showed that uracil was essential for the anaerobic growth of Staphylococcus aureus, but not for aerobic growth of the same organism. Of five strains tested three required uracil, while one required both guanine and uracil for growth. Thymine or cytosine did not replace uracil for this organism. These experiments suggested that hydrolytic products of nucleic acids might become factors limiting growth of various organisms under certain conditions. Bonner and Haagen-Smit (2) in 1939 showed that adenine greatly stimulated growth of leaves under defined conditions, while Möller (3) showed that adenine was required for growth of Streptobacterium plantarum. Pappenheimer and Hottle (4) recently showed that adenine was necessary for the growth of a strain of Group A hemolytic streptococci; it could be replaced by hypoxanthine, guanine, anthine, guanylic acid or adenylic acid. They made the very interesting observation that adenine was unnecessary for growth of this organism if the carbon dioxide tension was maintained at a sufficiently high level
Binary systems: implications for outflows & periodicities relevant to masers
Bipolar molecular outflows have been observed and studied extensively in the
past, but some recent observations of periodic variations in maser intensity
pose new challenges. Even quasi-periodic maser flares have been observed and
reported in the literature. Motivated by these data, we have tried to study
situations in binary systems with specific attention to the two observed
features, i.e., the bipolar flows and the variabilities in the maser intensity.
We have studied the evolution of spherically symmetric wind from one of the
bodies in the binary system, in the plane of the binary. Our approach includes
the analytical study of rotating flows with numerical computation of
streamlines of fluid particles using PLUTO code. We present the results of our

Partnerships Create Success for the Devil’s Garden Wild Horses
Many wild horse (Equus ferus caballus) populations that inhabit designated federal land in the United States currently exceed management objectives. Overabundant wild horse populations can adversely impact the ecosystem, native wildlife, and other land uses. Unfortunately, there is not a universal solution, as each impacted area may differ ecologically, economically, socially, and politically. Wild horse management is not just a 1-time project but a long-term program where buy-in is needed from the federal and state agencies, local governments, and private partners. Local county governments and private partners can have important insights and significant influence on the development and success of local wild horse management strategies. The combined involvement of local government and stakeholders can have a wide range of benefits including increasing capacity for management, developing new management and placement techniques, and creating authentic program branding and outreach for better placement success. Partners can often complete projects in tighter time frames, find employees, and experience less government red tape in implementation. Buy-in from the local community can also decrease the amount of negative feedback during management implementation and create a support network to counteract the negative aspects of management. Located in the northeast corner of the state of California, USA, Modoc County recognized early on the need for local government participation in conversations and decisions surrounding wild horses and their management on the Devil’s Garden Plateau Wild Horse Territory (WHT). The county implemented a coordinated planning and government-to-government communication process starting in 2011 to engage the Modoc National Forest, which manages the WHT, in meaningful solution-based dialogue. This paper offers examples of unique collaborative opportunities and solutions that have been successfully used in Modoc County to develop and implement a wild horse management plan. In the years since it was adopted, this plan has halted population growth and started to return the population to the appropriate management level on the Devil’s Garden Plateau
'To bring the work to greater perfection': systematising governance in the Church of Scotland, 1696–1800
Following the confirmation of Presbyterian government in the Church of Scotland in 1690, a number of attempts were made to codify the governance practices that were to be followed in the various ruling bodies of the church. A review of these attempts indicates a distinctive approach to governance based on detailed record keeping and the monitoring of activities based on these records. While the church never managed to agree on a complete manual of procedure, a review of responses to the proposals suggests substantial conformance with their main precepts. Not only did these precepts contribute to the consolidation of the Presbyterian settlement of 1690, they also provided a legalistic and systemic cast to organisational structures and practices. This then shaped a distinctive ‘culture of organisation’ which, in conjunction with other institutions such as education, provided to-hand resources for the widely noted Scottish competence in administration. A focus on administrative practices in their cultural and social context provides a basis for assessing claims to Scottish distinctiveness and influence
Glycerol extends lifespan of Brachionus manjavacas (Rotifera) and protects against stressors
AbstractDiet has profound effects on animal longevity and manipulation of nutrient sensing pathways is one of the primary interventions capable of lifespan extension. This often is done through caloric restriction (CR) and a variety of CR mimics have been identified that produce life extending effects without adhering to the rigorous CR dietary regimen. Glycerol is a dietary supplement capable mimicking CR by shifting metabolism away from glycolysis and towards oxidative phosphorylation. Glycerol supplementation has a number of beneficial effects, including lifespan extension, improved stress resistance, and enhanced locomotory and mitochondria activity in older age classes. Using rotifers as a model, we show that supplements of 150–300mM glycerol produced 40–50% extension of mean lifespan. This effect was produced by raising glycerol concentration only three times higher than its baseline concentration in rotifer tissues. Glycerol supplementation decreased rotifer reliance on glycolysis and reduced the pro-aging effects of glucose. Glycerol also acted as a chemical chaperone, mitigating damage by protein aggregation. Glycerol treatment improved rotifer swimming performance in older age classes and maintained more mitochondrial activity. Glycerol treatment provided increased resistance to starvation, heat, oxidation, and osmotic stress, but not UV stress. When glycerol was co-administered with the hexokinase inhibitor 2-deoxyglucose, the lifespan extending effect of glycerol was enhanced. Co-administration of glycerol with inhibitors like 2-deoxyglucose can lower their efficacious doses, thereby reducing their toxic side effects
High resolution observations of the L1551 bipolar outflow
The nearby dark cloud Lynds 1551 contains one of the closest examples of a well-collimated bipolar molecular outflow. This source has the largest angular size of any known outflow and was the first bipolar outflow to be detected. The outflow originates from a low-luminosity young stellar object, IRS-5. Optical and radio continuum observations show the presence of a highly collimated, ionized stellar wind orginating from close to IRS-5 and aligned with the molecular outflow. However, we have little information on the actual mechanism that generates the stellar wind and collimates it into opposed jets. The Very Large Array (VLA) observations indicate that the winds originate within 10(15) cm of IRS-5, unfortunately at a size scale difficult to resolve. For these reasons, observations of the structure and dynamics of the hypersonic molecular gas may provide valuable information on the origin and evolution of these outflows. In addition, the study of the impact of the outflowing gas on the surrounding molecular material is essential to understand the consequence these outflows have on the evolution and star formation history of the entire cloud. Moriarty-Schieven et al. (1986) obtained a oversampled map of the CO emission of a portion of both the blueshifted and redshifted outflows in LI551 using Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory 14 m telescope. The oversampled maps have been reconstructed to an effective angular resolution of 20 arcsec using a maximum entropy algorithm. A continuation of the study of Moriarty-Schieven et al. is presented. The entire L1551 outflow has now been mapped at 12 arcsec sampling requiring roughly 4000 spectra. This data has been constructed to 20 arcsec resolution to provide the first high resolution picture of the entire L1551 outflow. This new data has shown that the blueshifted lobe is more extended than previously thought and has expanded downstream sufficiently to break out of the dense molecular cloud, but the redshifted outflow is still confined within the molecular cloud. Details of the structure and kinematics of the high velocity gas are used to test the various models of the origin and evolution of outflows
C18O (3-2) observations of the Cometary Globule CG 12: a cold core and a C18O hot spot
The feasibility of observing the C18O (3-2) spectral line in cold clouds with
the APEX telescope has been tested. As the line at 329.330 GHz lies in the wing
of a strong atmospheric H2O absorption it can be observed only at high altitude
observatories. Using the three lowest rotational levels instead of only two
helps to narrow down the physical properties of dark clouds and globules. The
centres of two C18O maxima in the high latitude low mass star forming region CG
12 were mapped in C18O (3-2) and the data were analyzed together with spectral
line data from the SEST. The T_MB(3-2)/T_MB(2-1) ratio in the northern C18O
maximum, CG 12 N, is 0.8, and in the southern maximum, CG 12 S, ~2. CG 12 N is
modelled as a 120'' diameter (0.4pc) cold core with a mass of 27 Msun. A small
size maximum with a narrow, 0.8 kms-1, C18O (3-2) spectral line with a peak
temperature of T_MB ~11 K was detected in CG 12 S. This maximum is modelled as
a 60'' to 80'' diameter (~0.2pc) hot (80 K < Tex < 200 K) ~1.6 Msun clump. The
source lies on the axis of a highly collimated bipolar molecular outflow near
its driving source. This is the first detection of such a compact, warm object

Riparian Meadow Response to Modern Conservation Grazing Management.
Riparian meadows occupy a small proportion of the public lands in the western United States but they provide numerous ecosystem services, including the production of high-quality forage for livestock grazing. Modern conservation management strategies (e.g., reductions in livestock stocking rates and adoption of new riparian grazing standards) have been implemented to better balance riparian conservation and livestock production objectives on publicly managed lands. We examined potential relationships between long-term changes in plant community, livestock grazing pressure and environmental conditions at two spatial scales in meadows grazed under conservation management strategies. Changes in plant community were not associated with either livestock stocking rate or precipitation at the grazing allotment (i.e., administrative) scale. Alternatively, both grazing pressure and precipitation had significant, albeit modest, associations with changes in plant community at the meadow (i.e., ecological site) scale. These results suggest that reductions in stocking rate have improved the balance between riparian conservation and livestock production goals. However, associations between elevation, site wetness, precipitation, and changes in plant community suggest that changing climate conditions (e.g., reduced snowpack and changes in timing of snowmelt) could trigger shifts in plant communities, potentially impacting both conservation and agricultural services (e.g., livestock and forage production). Therefore, adaptive, site-specific management strategies are required to meet grazing pressure limits and safeguard ecosystem services within individual meadows, especially under more variable climate conditions
