    We present a number of arguments in favor of the suggestion that the Marshall-Peierls sign rule survives the frustration in the square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with frustrating next-nearest-neighbor (diagonal) bonds (J1−J2J_{1}-J_{2} model) for relatively large values of the parameter J2/J1J_{2}/J_{1}.     Global transcript levels respond to small changes of the carbon status during progressive exhaustion of carbohydrates in Arabidopsis rosettes

    The balance between the supply and utilization of carbon (C) changes continually. It has been proposed that plants respond in an acclimatory manner, modifying C utilization to minimize harmful periods of C depletion. This hypothesis predicts that signaling events are initiated by small changes in C status. We analyzed the global transcriptional response to a gradual depletion of C during the night and an extension of the night, where C becomes severely limiting from 4 h onward. The response was interpreted using published datasets for sugar, light, and circadian responses. Hundreds of C-responsive genes respond during the night and others very early in the extended night. Pathway analysis reveals that biosynthesis and cellular growth genes are repressed during the night and genes involved in catabolism are induced during the first hours of the extended night. The C response is amplified by an antagonistic interaction with the clock. Light signaling is attenuated during the 24-h light/dark cycle. A model was developed that uses the response of 22K genes during a circadian cycle and their responses to C and light to predict global transcriptional responses during diurnal cycles of wild-type and starchless pgm mutant plants and an extended night in wild-type plants. By identifying sets of genes that respond at different speeds and times during C depletion, our extended dataset and model aid the analysis of candidates for C signaling.     J1−J2J_1-J_2 Quantum Heisenberg Antiferromagnet: Improved Spin-Wave Theories Versus Exact-Diagonalization Data

    We reconsider the results cocerning the extreme-quantum S=1/2S=1/2 square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with frustrating diagonal couplings (J1−J2J_1-J_2 model) drawn from a comparison with exact-diagonalization data. A combined approach using also some intrinsic features of the self-consistent spin-wave theory leads to the conclusion that the theory strongly overestimates the stabilizing role of quantum flutcuations in respect to the N\'{e}el phase in the extreme-quantum case S=1/2S=1/2. On the other hand, the analysis implies that the N\'{e}el phase remains stable at least up to the limit J2/J1=0.49J_{2}/J_{1} = 0.49 which is pretty larger than some previous estimates. In addition, it is argued that the spin-wave ansatz predicts the existence of a finite range (J2/J1<0.323J_{2}/J_{1}<0.323 in the linear spin-wave theory) where the Marshall-Peierls sigh rule survives the frustrations.Comment: 13 pages, LaTex, 7 figures on reques

    Spin-1/2 J1-J2 model on the body-centered cubic lattice

    Using exact diagonalization (ED) and linear spin wave theory (LSWT) we study the influence of frustration and quantum fluctuations on the magnetic ordering in the ground state of the spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet (J1-J2 model) on the body-centered cubic (bcc) lattice. Contrary to the J1-J2 model on the square lattice, we find for the bcc lattice that frustration and quantum fluctuations do not lead to a quantum disordered phase for strong frustration. The results of both approaches (ED, LSWT) suggest a first order transition at J2/J1 ≈\approx 0.7 from the two-sublattice Neel phase at low J2 to a collinear phase at large J2.Comment: 6.1 pages 7 figure

    Sign Rules for Anisotropic Quantum Spin Systems

    We present new and exact ``sign rules'' for various spin-s anisotropic spin-lattice models. It is shown that, after a simple transformation which utilizes these sign rules, the ground-state wave function of the transformed Hamiltonian is positive-definite. Using these results exact statements for various expectation values of off-diagonal operators are presented, and transitions in the behavior of these expectation values are observed at particular values of the anisotropy. Furthermore, the effects of sign rules in variational calculations and quantum Monte Carlo calculations are considered. They are illustrated by a simple variational treatment of a one-dimensional anisotropic spin model.Comment: 4 pages, 1 ps-figur

    Stellar properties of z ~ 1 Lyman-break galaxies from ACS slitless grism spectra

    Lyman-break galaxies are now regularly found in the high redshift Universe by searching for the break in the galaxy spectrum caused by the Lyman-limit redshifted into the optical or even near-IR. At lower redshift, this break is covered by the GALEX UV channels and small samples of z ~ 1 LBGs have been presented in the literature. Here we give results from fitting the spectral energy distributions of a small sub-set of low redshift LBGs and demonstrate the advantage of including photometric points derived from HST ACS slitless grism observations. The results show these galaxies to have very young, star forming populations, while still being massive and dusty. LBGs at low and high redshift show remarkable similarities in their properties, indicating that the LBG selection method picks similar galaxies throughout the Universe.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted in A&

    INTRODUCTION: Surgical fires are a rare but serious preventable safety risk in modern hospitals. Data from the US show that up to 650 surgical fires occur each year, with up to 5% causing death or serious harm. This study used the National Reporting and Learning Service (NRLS) database at the National Patient Safety Agency to explore whether spirit-based surgical skin preparation fluid contributes to the cause of surgical fires. METHODS: The NRLS database was interrogated for all incidents of surgical fires reported between 1 March 2004 and 1 March 2011. Each report was scrutinised manually to discover the cause of the fire. RESULTS: Thirteen surgical fires were reported during the study period. Of these, 11 were found to be directly related to spirit-based surgical skin preparation or preparation soaked swabs and drapes. CONCLUSIONS: Despite manufacturer's instructions and warnings, surgical fires continue to occur. Guidance published in the UK and US states that spirit-based skin preparation solutions should continue to be used but sets out some precautions. It may be that fire risk should be included in pre-surgical World Health Organization checklists or in the surgical training curriculum. Surgical staff should be aware of the risk that spirit-based skin preparation fluids pose and should take action to minimise the chance of fire occurring
