The Bulk Motion of Flat Edge-On Galaxies Based on 2MASS Photometry
We report the results of applying the 2MASS Tully-Fisher (TF) relations to
study the galaxy bulk flows. For 1141 all-sky distributed flat RFGC galaxies we
construct J, H, K_s TF relations and find that Kron magnitudes show
the smallest dispersion on the TF diagram. For the sample of 971 RFGC galaxies
with V_{3K} < 18000 km/s we find a dispersion and an
amplitude of bulk flow V= 199 +/-61 km/s, directed towards l=301 degr +/-18
degr, b=-2 degr +/-15 degr. Our determination of low-amplitude coherent flow is
in good agreement with a set of recent data derived from EFAR, PSCz, SCI/SCII
samples. The resultant two- dimensional smoothed peculiar velocity field traces
well the large-scale density variations in the galaxy distributions. The
regions of large positive peculiar velocities lie in the direction of the Great
Attractor and Shapley concentration. A significant negative peculiar velocity
is seen in the direction of Bootes and in the direction of the Local void. A
small positive peculiar velocity (100 -- 150 km/s) is seen towards the
Pisces-Perseus supercluster, as well as the Hercules - Coma - Corona Borealis

The 35S U5 snRNP is generated from the activated spliceosome during In vitro splicing
Primary gene transcripts of eukaryotes contain introns, which are removed during processing by splicing machinery. Biochemical studies In vitro have identified a specific pathway in which introns are recognised and spliced out. This occurs by progressive formation of spliceosomal complexes designated as E, A, B, and C. The composition and structure of these spliceosomal conformations have been characterised in many detail. In contrast, transitions between the complexes and the intermediates of these reactions are currently less clear. We have previously isolated a novel 35S U5 snRNP from HeLa nuclear extracts. The protein composition of this particle differed from the canonical 20S U5 snRNPs but was remarkably similar to the activated B* spliceosomes. Based on this observation we have proposed a hypothesis that 35S U5 snRNPs represent a dissociation product of the spliceosome after both transesterification reactions are completed. Here we provide experimental evidence that 35S U5 snRNPs are generated from the activated B* spliceosomes during In vitro splicing
Hacking commercial quantum cryptography systems by tailored bright illumination
The peculiar properties of quantum mechanics allow two remote parties to
communicate a private, secret key, which is protected from eavesdropping by the
laws of physics. So-called quantum key distribution (QKD) implementations
always rely on detectors to measure the relevant quantum property of single
photons. Here we demonstrate experimentally that the detectors in two
commercially available QKD systems can be fully remote-controlled using
specially tailored bright illumination. This makes it possible to tracelessly
acquire the full secret key; we propose an eavesdropping apparatus built of
off-the-shelf components. The loophole is likely to be present in most QKD
systems using avalanche photodiodes to detect single photons. We believe that
our findings are crucial for strengthening the security of practical QKD, by

Discrimination between two mechanisms of surface-scattering in a single-mode waveguide
Transport properties of a single-mode waveguide with rough boundary are
studied by discrimination between two mechanisms of surface scattering, the
amplitude and square-gradient ones. Although these mechanisms are generically
mixed, we show that for some profiles they can separately operate within
non-overlapping intervals of wave numbers of scattering waves. This effect may
be important in realistic situations due to inevitable long-range correlations

Wind regime peculiarities in the lower thermosphere in the winter of 1983/84
Temporal variations of prevailing winds at 90 to 100 km obtained from measurements carried out in winter 1983 to 1984 at three sites in the USSR and two sites in East Germany are reported. These variations are compared with those of the thermal stratospheric regime. Measurements were carried out using the drifts D2 method (meteor wind radar) and the D1 method (ionospheric drifts). Temporal variations of zonal and meridional prevailing wind components for all the sites are given. Also presented are zonal wind data obtained using the partial reflection wind radar. Wind velocity values were obtained by averaging data recorded at between 105 and 91 km altitude. Wind velocity data averaged in such a way can be related to about the same height interval to which the data obtained by the meteor radar and ionospheric methods at other sites, i.e., the mean height of the meteor zone (about 95 km). The results presented show that there are significant fluctuations about the seasonal course of both zonal and meridional prevailing winds
Estimation of the efficiency of the «soy – winter wheat» crop rotation link and its influence on soil properties
Crop rotation is a systematic solution to one of the main tasks of agricultural production: rational land management, taking into account their possible effective fertility, biological potential of cultivated plants and available external and internal resources (heat, climate, fertilizers, agricultural machinery and agrochemicals) in order to maintain the most economically efficient management, which is possible with consistently high yields, with consistent reproduction of soil fertility and protection of the external environment. And as a consequence, crop rotation in this case acts as the basis of modern zonal adaptive landscape farming systems. It defines most other systems: soil cultivation and protection from erosion processes, fertilization and plant protection systems, seed production and variety change, irrigation and drainage of lands, technical systems, labor organization, etc. crop rotation «soybean-winter wheat» on merged leached chernozems and its effect on soil properties in the southern foothill zone of the Western Ciscaucasia. As a result of the study, a comprehensive assessment of the productivity of the «soybean-winter wheat» link in the crop rotation has been carried out and its positive effect on agrophysical and agrochemical properties of merged chernozems determined. It has been established that in order to obtain high-quality soybean seeds of the Mentor variety with the corresponding qualities of «the winter wheat» predecessor in the foothill zone of Adygea, it is necessary to use early sevarian conditions at a seeding rate of 0,6 million pieces/ha and a row spacing of 15 and 30 cm. To acieve a high level of production profitability, winter wheat of the Alekseich variety should be placed according to the «soybeans» predecessor against the background of surface tillage (10–12 cm). At the same time, it is proposed to apply mineral fertilizers at a rate of 200 kg/ha in the form of sulfoammophos N20P20S8, with obligatory double spring feeding of 150 kg/ha with ammonium nitrate N51+N51
Does the Babcock--Leighton Mechanism Operate on the Sun?
The contribution of the Babcock-Leighton mechanism to the generation of the
Sun's poloidal magnetic field is estimated from sunspot data for three solar
cycles. Comparison of the derived quantities with the A-index of the
large-scale magnetic field suggests a positive answer to the question posed in

To the issue of the use of sodium-lithium countertransport rate in red cell membrane as a prognostic marker of artherial hypertension mordbidity and mortality: an experience of 25-year follow up cohort study
Aim. The article discusses the results of a long-term cohort study devoted to the search for the possible relationship of arterial hypertension morbidity and mortality with the rate of sodium-lithium countertransport (Na+-Li+-СT) in red cell membrane which is a marker of the structural and functional state of the cell membrane.
Methods. The study of the functional state of cell membranes by determining the maximal rate of Na+-Li+-CT in red cell membrane with quintiles analysis of the rate of Na+-Li+-CT. Screening clinical examination, including registration of blood pressure (BP), ECG study, the study of eyeground vessels, one- and two-dimensional echocardiography (EchoCG), the study of the lipid spectrum of the blood. Analysis of medical records.
Results. Based on the results of long-term follow up of the aging cohort total mortality is not associated with Na+-Li+-СT rate in red cell membrane. At the average age of 50 bimodality is detected in the development of new cases of primary arterial hypertension associated with the values of Na+-Li+-СT rate of the 1st quartile (36-206 micromoles of Li per liter of cells per hour) and 3d quartile (276-347 micromoles of Li per liter of cells per hour). At the average age of cohort of 55.6±6.7 years the distribution of patients with arterial hypertension by quartiles of Na+-Li+-СT rate becomes almost identical with the statistically non-significant prevalence of 4th quartile of Na+-Li+-СT rate.
Conclusion. The expected correlation between mortality among persons with hypertension and membrane disorders determined by the high rate of Na+-Li+-СT was not revealed. However, the tendency to the predominance of mortality at high Na+-Li+-СT rate suggests that with a much larger sample size a significant relationship may be confirmed. The necessity of studying the relationship between mortality from arterial hypertension and high rate of Na+-Li+-СT in female cohorts remains actual. Increasing difference of mortality rate among patients with and without arterial hypertension with high rate of Na+-Li+-СT can indicate the relationship between mortality from arterial hypertension and membrane disorders
