    Strongly Incompatible Quantum Devices

    The fact that there are quantum observables without a simultaneous measurement is one of the fundamental characteristics of quantum mechanics. In this work we expand the concept of joint measurability to all kinds of possible measurement devices, and we call this relation compatibility. Two devices are incompatible if they cannot be implemented as parts of a single measurement setup. We introduce also a more stringent notion of incompatibility, strong incompatibility. Both incompatibility and strong incompatibility are rigorously characterized and their difference is demonstrated by examples.Comment: 27 pages (AMSart), 6 figure

    Coverage-dependent structural phase transformations in the adsorption of pentacene on an aperiodically modulated Cu film

    Surface ordering of pentacene molecules adsorbed on an aperiodic Cu surface has been studied with density functional theory (DFT) and scanning tunnelling microscopy as a function of coverage. Below 0.73 ML (5.3 × 1013 molecules cm−2), the adsorbate structure is row-like with the molecular axes aligned with the rows in the Cu structure. Between this coverage and 1 ML (7.3 × 1013 molecules cm−2), a structural phase with a checkerboard structure is seen. At this coverage region, the molecules are very close to each other which leads to unusual bending. At higher coverages, a further phase transition to a high-density row structure is seen for most of the film. DFT with van der Waals functionals is employed to study how the molecule-molecule and molecule-surface interactions evolve as a function of coverage

    Common mental disorders in young adults born late-preterm

    Background Results of adulthood mental health of those born late-preterm (34 + 0–36 + 6 weeks + days of gestation) are mixed and based on national registers. We examined if late-preterm birth was associated with a higher risk for common mental disorders in young adulthood when using a diagnostic interview, and if this risk decreased as gestational age increased. Method A total of 800 young adults (mean = 25.3, s.d. = 0.62 years), born 1985–1986, participated in a follow-up of the Arvo Ylppö Longitudinal Study. Common mental disorders (mood, anxiety and substance use disorders) during the past 12 months were defined using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (Munich version). Gestational age was extracted from hospital birth records and categorized into early-preterm (<34 + 0, n = 37), late-preterm (34 + 0–36 + 6, n = 106), term (37 + 0–41 + 6, n = 617) and post-term (≄42 + 0, n = 40). Results Those born late-preterm and at term were at a similar risk for any common mental disorder [odds ratio (OR) 1.11, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.67–1.84], for mood (OR 1.11, 95% CI 0.54–2.25), anxiety (OR 1.00, 95% CI 0.40–2.50) and substance use (OR 1.31, 95% CI 0.74–2.32) disorders, and co-morbidity of these disorders (p = 0.38). While the mental disorder risk decreased significantly as gestational age increased, the trend was driven by a higher risk in those born early-preterm. Conclusions Using a cohort born during the advanced neonatal and early childhood care, we found that not all individuals born preterm are at risk for common mental disorders in young adulthood – those born late-preterm are not, while those born early-preterm are at a higher risk.     Small-scale flux ropes in ICME sheaths

    Sheath regions of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) are formed when the upstream solar wind is deflected and compressed due to the propagation and expansion of the ICME. Small-scale flux ropes found in the solar wind can thus be swept into ICME-driven sheath regions. They may also be generated locally within the sheaths through a range of processes. This work applies wavelet analysis to obtain the normalized reduced magnetic helicity, normalized cross helicity, and normalized residual energy, and uses them to identify small-scale flux ropes and Alfven waves in 55 ICME-driven sheath regions observed by the Wind spacecraft in the near-Earth solar wind. Their occurrence is investigated separately for three different frequency ranges between 10(-2) - 10(-4) Hz. We find that small scale flux ropes are more common in ICME sheaths than in the upstream wind, implying that they are at least to some extent actively generated in the sheath and not just compressed from the upstream wind. Alfven waves occur more evenly in the upstream wind and in the sheath. This study also reveals that while the highest frequency (smallest scale) flux ropes occur relatively evenly across the sheath, the lower frequency (largest scale) flux ropes peak near the ICME leading edge. This suggests that they could have different physical origins, and that processes near the ICME leading edge are important for generating the larger scale population.Peer reviewe

    Measurement uncertainty relations

    Measurement uncertainty relations are quantitative bounds on the errors in an approximate joint measurement of two observables. They can be seen as a generalization of the error/disturbance tradeoff first discussed heuristically by Heisenberg. Here we prove such relations for the case of two canonically conjugate observables like position and momentum, and establish a close connection with the more familiar preparation uncertainty relations constraining the sharpness of the distributions of the two observables in the same state. Both sets of relations are generalized to means of order α\alpha rather than the usual quadratic means, and we show that the optimal constants are the same for preparation and for measurement uncertainty. The constants are determined numerically and compared with some bounds in the literature. In both cases the near-saturation of the inequalities entails that the state (resp. observable) is uniformly close to a minimizing one.Comment: This version 2 contains minor corrections and reformulation

    Cross helicity of interplanetary coronal mass ejections at 1 au

    Interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) contain magnetic field and velocity fluctuations across a wide range of scales. These fluctuations may be interpreted as Alfvenic wave packets propagating parallel or antiparallel to the background magnetic field, with the difference in power between counterpropagating fluxes quantified by the cross helicity. We have determined the cross helicity of inertial range fluctuations at 10(-3) to 10(-2) Hz in 226 ICME flux ropes and 176 ICME sheaths observed by the Wind spacecraft at 1 au during 1995-2015. The flux ropes and sheaths had mean, normalized cross helicities of 0.18 and 0.24, respectively, with positive values here indicating net antisunward fluxes. While still tipped towards the antisunward direction on average, fluxes in ICMEs tend to be more balanced than in the solar wind at 1 au, where the mean cross helicity is larger. Superposed epoch profiles show cross helicity falling sharply in the sheath and reaching a minimum inside the flux rope near the leading edge. More imbalanced, solar wind-like cross helicity was found towards the trailing edge and laterally further from the rope axis. The dependence of cross helicity on flux rope orientation and the presence of an upstream shock are considered. Potential origins of the low cross helicity in ICMEs at 1 au include balanced driving of the closed-loop flux rope at the Sun and ICME-solar wind interactions in interplanetary space. We propose that low cross helicity of fluctuations is added to the standard list of ICME signatures.Peer reviewe

    The Epigenetic Clock at Birth : Associations With Maternal Antenatal Depression and Child Psychiatric Problems

    Objective: Maternal antenatal depression may compromise the fetal developmental milieu and contribute to individual differences in aging and disease trajectories in later life. We evaluated the association between maternal antenatal depression and a novel biomarker of aging at birth, namely epigenetic gestational age (GA) based on fetal cord blood methylation data. We also examined whether this biomarker prospectively predicts and mediates maternal effects on early childhood psychiatric problems. Method: A total of 694 mothers from the Prediction and Prevention of Preeclampsia and Intrauterine Growth Restriction (PREDO) Study provided information on history of depression diagnosed before pregnancy; 581 completed the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale throughout pregnancy, and 407 completed the Child Behavior Checklist at child's age 3.7 years (SD = 0.75 year). DNA methylation (DNAm) GA of fetal cord blood DNA was based on the methylation profile of 148 selected cytosine linked to guanine by phosphate (CpG) sites. Epigenetic GA was calculated as the arithmetic difference between DNAm GA and chronological GA and adjusted for chronological GA. Results: Maternal history of depression diagnosed before pregnancy (mean difference = -0.25 SD units, 95% CI = -0.46 to -0.03) and greater antenatal depressive symptoms (-0.08 SD unit per I-SD unit increase, 95% CI = -0.16 to -0.004) were associated with child's lower epigenetic GA. Child's lower epigenetic GA, in turn, prospectively predicted total and internalizing problems and partially mediated the effects of maternal antenatal depression on internalizing problems in boys. Conclusion: Maternal antenatal depression is associated with lower epigenetic GA in offspring. This lower epigenetic GA seems to be associated with a developmental disadvantage for boys, who, in early childhood, show greater psychiatric problems.Peer reviewe

    Translation and validation of the Finnish version of index of dental anxiety and fear (IDAF-4C(+)) among dental students

    Background: Dental fear accounts for 41% of the non-habitual dental attendance such as visiting only when in pain among adult Finns. Dentists should be able to recognize patients in risk for irregular attendance due to dental fear and measure their fear with valid and reliable instrument that capture the multidimensionality of dental fear. The study's aim was to translate the Index of Dental Anxiety and Fear (IDAF-4C+) into Finnish and test its reliability and validity.Methods: The study population consisted of dental students in a Finnish university (n = 202). The IDAF-4C(+) was back-and forward translated by experts as well as a native English translator, blinded to the original version. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach's alpha. Validity of the IDAF-4C(+) was assessed against the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) using Spearman correlation coefficients and through the use of Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and between genders using Mann-Whitney U tests.Results: The reliability of the IDAF-4C(+) was good, the Cronbach's alpha being 0.88. The IDAF-4C(+) and MDAS and their subscales were correlated, with coefficients varying between 0.34 and 0.85. Correlations were stronger with the emotional and physiological components of the IDAF-4C(+). EFA revealed one factor explaining 51.7% of the common variance (eigenvalue = 4.6). Women tended to have slightly higher mean scores than men (1.49 vs. 1.36, p = 0.247).Conclusions: The translation and localization of the Finnish version of the IDAF-4C(+) can be considered as providing some evidence of the validity and reliability of the scale. It adds to previously used measures as it considers also the behavioral, cognitive and physiological dimension involved in dental fear
