Magnetoresistance of atomic-scale electromigrated nickel nanocontacts
We report measurements of the electron transport through atomic-scale
constrictions and tunnel junctions between ferromagnetic electrodes. Structures
are fabricated using a combination of e-beam lithography and controlled
electromigration. Sample geometries are chosen to allow independent control of
electrode bulk magnetizations. As junction size is decreased to the single
channel limit, conventional anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) increases in
magnitude, approaching the size expected for tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR)
upon tunnel junction formation. Significant mesoscopic variations are seen in
the magnitude and sign of the magnetoresistance, and no evidence is found of
large ballistic magnetoresistance effects.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

Three-terminal devices to examine single molecule conductance switching
We report electronic transport measurements of single-molecule transistor
devices incorporating bipyridyl-dinitro oligophenylene-ethynylene dithiol
(BPDN-DT), a molecule known to exhibit conductance switching in other
measurement configurations. We observe hysteretic conductance switching in 8%
of devices with measurable currents, and find that dependence of the switching
properties on gate voltage is rare when compared to other single-molecule
transistor devices. This suggests that polaron formation is unlikely to be
responsible for switching in these devices. We discuss this and alternative

Conformal Ricci collineations of static spherically symmetric spacetimes
Conformal Ricci collineations of static spherically symmetric spacetimes are
studied. The general form of the vector fields generating conformal Ricci
collineations is found when the Ricci tensor is non-degenerate, in which case
the number of independent conformal Ricci collineations is \emph{fifteen}; the
maximum number for 4-dimensional manifolds. In the degenerate case it is found
that the static spherically symmetric spacetimes always have an infinite number
of conformal Ricci collineations. Some examples are provided which admit
non-trivial conformal Ricci collineations, and perfect fluid source of the
matter
Where Are We Going? Parent-child television reality programmes in China
This article looks at the role of format television in the People’s Republic of China. It juxtaposes two key ideas: the ‘one format policy’ and the One Child Policy. Both are government restrictions intended to kerb reproduction. Formats provide a means for the reproduction of programming ideas, that is, they are generative. When formats ‘fit’ cultural understandings they can be remarkably successful, as with family oriented formats. Yet there is something unusual about China: in comparison to many international markets, China offers a unique demographic – those people born after 1978. The article examines a formatted programme called Where Are We Going, Dad? introduced into China from South Korea, which illustrates a subgenre known as the ‘parent-child caring’ (qinzi) format. The article shows how this genre has capitalised on the interest in the health and future well-being of the One Child in China, as well as spinning off its own formatted offspring
The formation heritage of Jupiter Family Comet 10P/Tempel 2 as revealed by infrared spectroscopy
We present spectral and spatial information for major volatile species in
Comet 10P/Tempel 2, based on high-dispersion infrared spectra acquired on UT
2010 July 26 (heliocentric distance Rh = 1.44 AU) and September 18 (Rh = 1.62
AU), following the comet's perihelion passage on UT 2010 July 04. The total
production rate for water on July 26 was (1.90 +/- 0.12) x 10^28 molecules s-1,
and abundances of six trace gases (relative to water) were: CH3OH (1.58% +/-
0.23), C2H6 (0.39% +/- 0.04), NH3 (0.83% +/- 0.20), and HCN (0.13% +/- 0.02). A
detailed analysis of intensities for water emission lines provided a rotational
temperature of 35 +/- 3 K. The mean OPR is consistent with nuclear spin
populations in statistical equilibrium (OPR = 3.01 +/- 0.18), and the (1-sigma)
lower bound corresponds to a spin temperature > 38 K. Our measurements were
contemporaneous with a jet-like feature observed at optical wavelengths. The
spatial profiles of four primary volatiles display strong enhancements in the
jet direction, which favors release from a localized vent on the nucleus. The
measured IR continuum is much more sharply peaked and is consistent with a
dominant contribution from the nucleus itself. The peak intensities for H2O,
CH3OH, and C2H6 are offset by ~200 km in the jet direction, suggesting the
possible existence of a distributed source, such as the release of icy grains
that subsequently sublimed in the coma. On UT September 18, no obvious emission
lines were present in our spectra, nevertheless we obtained a 3-sigma upper
limit Q(H2O) < 2.86 x 10^27 molecules s-1
Integrating artificial intelligence into an ophthalmologist’s workflow: obstacles and opportunities
Introduction: Demand in clinical services within the field of ophthalmology is predicted to rise over the future years. Artificial intelligence, in particular, machine learning-based systems, have demonstrated significant potential in optimizing medical diagnostics, predictive analysis, and management of clinical conditions. Ophthalmology has been at the forefront of this digital revolution, setting precedents for integration of these systems into clinical workflows. Areas covered: This review discusses integration of machine learning tools within ophthalmology clinical practices. We discuss key issues around ethical consideration, regulation, and clinical governance. We also highlight challenges associated with clinical adoption, sustainability, and discuss the importance of interoperability. Expert opinion: Clinical integration is considered one of the most challenging stages within the implementation process. Successful integration necessitates a collaborative approach from multiple stakeholders around a structured governance framework, with emphasis on standardization across healthcare providers and equipment and software developers

Perceptual confidence demonstrates trial-by-trial insight into the precision of audio-visual timing encoding
Peoples’ subjective feelings of confidence typically correlate positively with objective measures of task performance, even when no performance feedback is provided. This relationship has seldom been investigated in the field of human time perception. Here we find a positive relationship between the precision of human timing perception and decisional confidence. We first demonstrate that subjective audio–visual timing judgements are more precise when people report a high, as opposed to a low, level of confidence. We then find that this relationship is more likely to result from variance in sensory timing estimates than the application of variable decision criteria, as the relationship held when we adopted a measure of timing sensitivity designed to limit the influence of subjective criteria. Our results suggest analyses of timing perception and associated decisional confidence reflect the trial-by-trial variability with which timing has been encoded
