Response to a rabies epidemic in Bali, Indonesia
Emergency vaccinations and culling failed to contain an outbreak of rabies in Bali, Indonesia, during 2008–2009. Subsequent island-wide mass vaccination (reaching 70% coverage, >200,000 dogs) led to substantial declines in rabies incidence and spread. However, the incidence of dog bites remains high, and repeat campaigns are necessary to eliminate rabies in Bali
Periodic magnetorotational dynamo action as a prototype of nonlinear magnetic field generation in shear flows
The nature of dynamo action in shear flows prone to magnetohydrodynamic
instabilities is investigated using the magnetorotational dynamo in Keplerian
shear flow as a prototype problem. Using direct numerical simulations and
Newton's method, we compute an exact time-periodic magnetorotational dynamo
solution to the three-dimensional dissipative incompressible
magnetohydrodynamic equations with rotation and shear. We discuss the physical
mechanism behind the cycle and show that it results from a combination of
linear and nonlinear interactions between a large-scale axisymmetric toroidal
magnetic field and non-axisymmetric perturbations amplified by the
magnetorotational instability. We demonstrate that this large scale dynamo
mechanism is overall intrinsically nonlinear and not reducible to the standard
mean-field dynamo formalism. Our results therefore provide clear evidence for a
generic nonlinear generation mechanism of time-dependent coherent large-scale
magnetic fields in shear flows and call for new theoretical dynamo models.
These findings may offer important clues to understand the transitional and

Extreme value distributions for weakly correlated fitnesses in block model
We study the limit distribution of the largest fitness for two models of
weakly correlated and identically distributed random fitnesses. The correlated
fitness is given by a linear combination of a fixed number of independent
random variables drawn from a common parent distribution. We find that for
certain class of parent distributions, the extreme value distribution for
correlated random variables can be related either to one of the known limit
laws for independent variables or the parent distribution itself. For other
cases, new limiting distributions appear. The conditions under which these

X-ray Signatures of an Ionized Reprocessor in the Seyfert galaxy Ton S 180
We discuss the hard X-ray properties of the Seyfert galaxy Ton S 180, based
upon the analysis of ASCA data. We find the X-ray flux varied by a factor ~2 on
a time scale of a few thousand seconds. The source showed significantly higher
amplitude of variability in the 0.5-2 keV band than in the 2-10 keV band. The
continuum is adequately parameterized as a Gamma ~ 2.5 power-law across the
0.6--10 keV band . We confirm the recent discovery of an emission line of high
equivalent width, due to Fe K-shell emission from highly-ionized material.
These ASCA data show the Fe line profile to be broad and asymmetric and
tentatively suggest it is stronger during the X-ray flares, consistent with an
origin from the inner parts of an accretion disk. The X-ray spectrum is complex
below 2 keV, possibly due to emission from a blend of soft X-ray lines, which
would support the existence of an ionized reprocessor, most likely due to a

Resist, comply or workaround? An examination of different facets of user engagement with information systems
This paper provides a summary of studies of user resistance to Information Technology (IT) and identifies workaround activity as an understudied and distinct, but related, phenomenon. Previous categorizations of resistance have largely failed to address the relationships between the motivations for divergences from procedure and the associated workaround activity. This paper develops a composite model of resistance/workaround derived from two case study sites. We find four key antecedent conditions derived from both positive and negative resistance rationales and identify associations and links to various resultant workaround behaviours and provide supporting Chains of Evidence from two case studies
Theory of nonlinear optical properties of phenyl-substituted polyacetylenes
In this paper we present a theoretical study of the third-order nonlinear
optical properties of poly(diphenyl)polyacetylene (PDPA) pertaining to the
third-harmonic-generation (THG) process. We study the aforesaid process in
PDPA's using both the independent electron Hueckel model, as well as
correlated-electron Pariser-Parr-Pople (P-P-P) model. The P-P-P model based
calculations were performed using various configuration interaction (CI)
methods such as the the multi-reference-singles-doubles CI (MRSDCI), and the
quadruples-CI (QCI) methods, and the both longitudinal and the transverse
components of third-order susceptibilities were computed. The Hueckel model
calculations were performed on oligo-PDPA's containing up to fifty repeat
units, while correlated calculations were performed for oligomers containing up
to ten unit cells. At all levels of theory, the material exhibits highly
anisotropic nonlinear optical response, in keeping with its structural
anisotropy. We argue that the aforesaid anisotropy can be divided over two
natural energy scales: (a) the low-energy response is predominantly
longitudinal and is qualitatively similar to that of polyenes, while (b) the
high-energy response is mainly transverse, and is qualitatively similar to that

The central structure of Broad Absorption Line QSOs: observational characteristics in the cm-mm wavelength domain
Accounting for ~20% of the total QSO population, Broad Absorption Line QSOs
are still an unsolved problem in the AGN context. They present wide troughs in
the UV spectrum, due to material with velocities up to 0.2 c toward the
observer. The two models proposed in literature try to explain them as a
particular phase of the evolution of QSOs or as normal QSOs, but seen from a
particular line of sight.
We built a statistically complete sample of Radio-Loud BAL QSOs, and carried
out an observing campaign to piece together the whole spectrum in the cm
wavelength domain, and highlight all the possible differences with respect to a
comparison sample of Radio-Loud non-BAL QSOs. VLBI observations at high angular
resolution have been performed, to study the pc-scale morphology of these
objects. Finally, we tried to detect a possible dust component with
observations at mm-wavelengths.
Results do not seem to indicate a young age for all BAL QSOs. Instead a
variety of orientations and morphologies have been found, constraining the
outflows foreseen by the orientation model to have different possible angles
with respect to the jet axis
Spitzer Observations of 3C Quasars and Radio Galaxies: Mid-Infrared Properties of Powerful Radio Sources
We have measured mid-infrared radiation from an orientation-unbiased sample
of 3CRR galaxies and quasars at redshifts 0.4 < z < 1.2 with the IRS and MIPS
instruments on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Powerful emission (L_24micron >
10^22.4 W/Hz/sr) was detected from all but one of the sources. We fit the
Spitzer data as well as other measurements from the literature with synchrotron
and dust components. The IRS data provide powerful constraints on the fits. At
15 microns, quasars are typically four times brighter than radio galaxies with
the same isotropic radio power. Based on our fits, half of this difference can
be attributed to the presence of non-thermal emission in the quasars but not
the radio galaxies. The other half is consistent with dust absorption in the
radio galaxies but not the quasars. Fitted optical depths are anti-correlated
with core dominance, from which we infer an equatorial distribution of dust
around the central engine. The median optical depth at 9.7 microns for objects
with core-dominance factor R > 10^-2 is approximately 0.4; for objects with R <
10^-2, it is 1.1. We have thus addressed a long-standing question in the
unification of FR II quasars and galaxies: quasars are more luminous in the
mid-infrared than galaxies because of a combination of Doppler-boosted
synchrotron emission in quasars and extinction in galaxies, both

An exact reformulation of the Bose-Hubbard model in terms of a stochastic Gutzwiller ansatz
We extend our exact reformulation of the bosonic many-body problem in terms
of a stochastic Hartree ansatz to a stochastic Gutzwiller ansatz for the Bose
Hubbard model. This makes the corresponding Monte Carlo method more efficient
for strongly correlated bosonic phases like the Mott insulator phase or the
Tonks phase. We present a first numerical application of this stochastic method
to a system of impenetrable bosons on a 1D lattice showing the transition from
the discrete Tonks gas to the Mott phase as the chemical potential is
increased
The Molonglo Reference Catalog 1-Jy radio source survey IV. Optical spectroscopy of a complete quasar sample
Optical spectroscopic data are presented here for quasars from the Molonglo
Quasar Sample (MQS), which forms part of a complete survey of 1-Jy radio
sources from the Molonglo Reference Catalogue. The combination of low-frequency
selection and complete identifications means that the MQS is relatively free
from the orientation biases which affect most other quasar samples. To date,
the sample includes 105 quasars and 6 BL Lac objects, 106 of which have now
been confirmed spectroscopically. This paper presents a homogenous set of
low-resolution optical spectra for 79 MQS quasars, the majority of which have
been obtained at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Full observational details are
given and redshifts, continuum and emission-line data tabulated for all
