Multifrequency Observations of One of the Largest Supernova Remnants in the Local Group of Galaxies, LMC - SNR J0450-709

We present the results of new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of one of the largest supernova remnants, SNR J0450-709, in the Local Group of galaxies. We found that this Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) ob ject exhibits a typical morphology of an old supernova remnant (SNR) with diameter D=102x75+-1 pc and radio spectral index alpha=-0.43+-0.06. Regions of high polarisation were detected with peak value of ~40%.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Serbian Astronomical Journa

Inhibition of cellular protein secretion by norwalk virus nonstructural protein p22 requires a mimic of an endoplasmic reticulum export signal.

Protein trafficking between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi apparatus is central to cellular homeostasis. ER export signals are utilized by a subset of proteins to rapidly exit the ER by direct uptake into COPII vesicles for transport to the Golgi. Norwalk virus nonstructural protein p22 contains a YXΦESDG motif that mimics a di-acidic ER export signal in both sequence and function. However, unlike normal ER export signals, the ER export signal mimic of p22 is necessary for apparent inhibition of normal COPII vesicle trafficking, which leads to Golgi disassembly and antagonism of Golgi-dependent cellular protein secretion. This is the first reported function for p22. Disassembly of the Golgi apparatus was also observed in cells replicating Norwalk virus, which may contribute to pathogenesis by interfering with cellular processes that are dependent on an intact secretory pathway. These results indicate that the ER export signal mimic is critical to the antagonistic function of p22, shown herein to be a novel antagonist of ER/Golgi trafficking. This unique and well-conserved human norovirus motif is therefore an appealing target for antiviral drug development

My initial research related to saints ’ dedications was presented at the “Geography and Saints Cults ” conference a

Discovery of CH and OH in the -513 km s-1 Ejecta of Eta Carinae

The very massive star, Eta Carinae, is enshrouded in an unusual complex of stellar ejecta, which is highly depleted in C and O, and enriched in He and N. This circumstellar gas gives rise to distinct absorption components corresponding to at least 20 different velocities along the line-of-sight. The velocity component at -513 kms-1 exhibits very low ionization with predominantly neutral species of iron-peak elements. Our statistical equilibrium/photoionization modeling indicates that the low temperature (T = 760 K) and high density (n_H=10^7 cm^-3) of the -513 kms-1 component is conducive to molecule formation including those with the elements C and O. Examination of echelle spectra obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) aboard the confirms the model's predictions. The molecules, H_2, CH, and most likely OH, have been identified in the -513 kms-1 absorption spectrum. This paper presents the analysis of the HST/STIS spectra with the deduced column densities for CH, OH and C I, and upper limit for CO. It is quite extraordinary to see molecular species in a cool environment at such a high velocity. The sharp molecular and ionic absorptions in this extensively CNO- processed material offers us a unique environment for studying the chemistry, dust formation processes, and nucleosynthesis in the ejected layers of a highly evolved massive star.Comment: tentatively scheduled for the ApJ 1 September 2005, v630, 1 issu

Nonlinear saturation of electrostatic waves: mobile ions modify trapping scaling

The amplitude equation for an unstable electrostatic wave in a multi-species Vlasov plasma has been derived. The dynamics of the mode amplitude ρ(t)\rho(t) is studied using an expansion in ρ\rho; in particular, in the limit γ0+\gamma\rightarrow0^+, the singularities in the expansion coefficients are analyzed to predict the asymptotic dependence of the electric field on the linear growth rate γ\gamma. Generically Ekγ5/2|E_k|\sim \gamma^{5/2}, as γ0+\gamma\rightarrow0^+, but in the limit of infinite ion mass or for instabilities in reflection-symmetric systems due to real eigenvalues the more familiar trapping scaling Ekγ2|E_k|\sim \gamma^{2} is predicted.Comment: 13 pages (Latex/RevTex), 4 postscript encapsulated figures which are included using the utility "uufiles". The Utilization of Dissolved Free Amino Acids by Estuarine Microorganisms

    Get PDF
The importance of bacteria in the cycling of carbon in the Pamlico River estuary was studied by measuring the rates of uptake of organic compounds. Our methods allowed analysis with the Michaelis-Menten kinetics equations, and both the rates of uptake of dissolved free amino acids (DFAA) and glucose as well as the percentage of carbon subsequently respired as CO2 were determined. In addition, the concentrations of the amino acids in the water were determined using ion exchange chromatography. Other tests included measurements of primary productivity and of the effects of the other amino acids in the water upon the uptake of one amino acid. (...
